Flagellar swimming is one of the swimming methods used by micro-organisms to advance in aquatic environment. The undulating motion of the flagella was successfully imitated to create propulsion for a medical swimming micro robot. The influence of a head section on the performance of such a robot is shown analytically. Swimming experiments demonstrate forward and backward swimming of a novel magnetically driven swimming tail. We intend to use the flagellar swimming tail in a three tail configuration for neurosurgical intervention in the ventricular system.

WDM-PON is known as a promising technology for future access network. This paper investigates the performance of a novel 2.5Gbps WDM-PON Network architecture which employs new PON optical add/drop multiplexer (OADM), in order to support high coverage in unlimited scaling. Based on the architecture, higher installation and maintenance costs can be reduced, and the access network design can support symmetric transmission rate 10Gbps for distance up to 30 km is demonstrated.

This paper presents the analysis and the control of shunt-compensator for improving unbalanced voltages of power distribution systems in Thailand. The shunt-compensator is connected to the low voltage level in power distribution system. The analysis detail and the design of shunt-compensator obtain by using the voltage vector control (mathematical model with the stationary reference frame and synchronous reference frames). The unbalanced voltages are identified by using positive and negative sequence detection that can be shown in the synchronous reference frame. This method also presents the decoupling control including feed-forward control to compensate both positive and negative sequence component of grid voltage. The power circuit of the shunt-compensator and the distribution network are modeled by Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) of Thailand that is the same as worldwide standard of power distribution system. By using computer program, the simulation results showed the benefit and the performance of proposed methodology which obviously ensure the performance of shunt-compensator for mitigating the unbalanced voltages.

In this paper, the interest is the generalized synchronization in reduced-order for chaotic systems, i.e. the synchronization of the states of a slave system with a canonical projection of a different master system. A control approach, which involves an exact robust differentiator and a quasi-continuous high-order sliding mode-controller, is proposed for the above purpose. In this manner, the generalized synchronization in reduced-order is achieved in spite of mismatches between master and slave models. Results of the synchronization scheme performance are illustrated by means of simulations.

In conjunction with a grant from the National Science Foundation, the retention of students in Southern Illinois University - Carbondale (SIUC) College of engineering will be increased through the introduction of innovative academic and non-academic programs. The new academic programs consist of the following components: an introduction to engineering course, engineering designated sections of courses, a summer math course for new students who need improvement in math, and revisions to the math curriculum. The new non-academic programs consist of: creation of an engineering residential college, and peer mentoring, faculty mentoring, and mentoring by practicing engineers. The introduction to engineering course will include all freshman students in SIUC College of engineering. This lecture-laboratory course will provide an interesting description of each engineering major and allows students to work with hands-on projects that will teach the usefulness of mathematics and basic engineering concepts. The SIUC College of engineering has worked with other departments on campus to offer engineering designated sections of core curriculum courses, such as math, sciences, English, and speech communication. The summer math course lasts four-weeks and accepts students who test below the pre-calculus level and prepares them for pre-calculus during the fall semester. The mathematics curriculum is being modified so that all students who do not test into calculus will take a math course taught by the college of engineering that prepares them for calculus. Also, there are non-academic programs that have been designed to improve retention and the freshman experience. First, to foster the "living-learning community" experience, all freshman and sophomore engineering students will live in the engineering residential college with 36 peer mentors and three residential assistants.
