This article introduces a capacitance multiplier employing operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). The provided capacitor is a floating element synthesized from a grounded capacitor. Its outstanding feature is that the capacitive value can be widely adjusted by input bias currents of the OTAs and is temperature-insensitive. The circuit construction comprises only four OTAs, three of them are single-output OTAs which are commercially available while one of them is a dual-output OTA, cooperating with a grounded capacitor. The circuit performances are depicted through PSPICE simulations, they show good agreement to theoretical anticipation. An application as a fifth-order Chebyshev high-pass filter is included to confirm the usability of proposed circuit

This paper is written with the didactic purpose of exploring and indicating possibilities to power companies in the Balkan region for the application of adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) models in load prediction with real load data set. This paper reviews 2 circuits which are floating positive and negative inductance simulators using operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs). The simulated inductance values can be controlled electronically by adjusting the bias current of the OTA. Each inductance simulator comprises only 2 OTAs and 1 grounded capacitor without any external resistor and component matching requirements. This paper presents a design of robust load-frequency stabilizers of a superconducting magnetic energy storage (SMES) in coordination with a static synchronous series compensator (SSSC). As large load disturbances with changing frequency in the vicinity of the inter-area oscillations mode occur in an interconnected power system, a system frequency may be heavily perturbed and oscillatory. To stabilize frequency oscillations, a coordinated SMES with SSSC can be applied. On the other hand, variations of system parameters, several load changes etc., cause system uncertainties. To take such uncertainties into account, the multiplicative uncertainty is included in a system modeling. The structure of frequency stabilizer equipped with SMES and SSSC is a second-order lead/lag compensator. Control parameters of frequency stabilizers are automatically tuned by a tabu search. Simulation studies in a two-area interconnected power system confirm the effect of coordinated SMES with SSSC.

Edge detection is an important topic in image processing and a main tool in pattern recognition and image segmentation. Many edge detection techniques are available in the literature. 'A number of recent edge detectors are multiscale and include three main processing steps: smoothing, differentiation and labeling' (Ziau and Tabbone, 1997). This paper, presents a proposed method which is suitable for edge detection in images. This method is based on the use of the clustering algorithms (Self-Organizing Map (SOM), K-Means) and a gray scale edge detector (Canny, Generalized Edge Detector (GED)). It is shown that using the grayscale edge detectors may miss some parts of the edges which can be found using the proposed method.

This paper proposes a static reliability assessment for the combined cycle and thermal power plants in Thailand. A recursive algorithm for capacity model building is used to calculate the loss of load probability (LOLP), expected energy not serve (EENS), and the expected energy served by each generator. The annualized capital investment is taken into account as well as the value of lost load. The load duration curve and the generators forced outage rate data are obtained from the historical data of Thai power system. The result shown that the total expected cost of the system with combined cycle power plants is much lower than that of the system with thermal power plants due to the lower investment, fuel cost, and the expected outage cost. In addition, combined cycle power plants are the better candidates than thermal plants for the future power plants in Thailand.

The authors have some experience in building virtual worlds for education purposes, in archaeology and for language learning. However, many mainstream world-building applications do not offer quick and appropriate ways of developing interactive and user-driven content that can be easily shared with other users. Many education-orientated applications also require built-in tracking and evaluation mechanisms. Evaluation of virtual worlds and communities is difficult enough as it is. While commercial game engines offer a form of task performance tracking, they typically lack non-violent ways of supporting interaction and collaborative teamwork. The chance to help students and the public to learn by creating and collaborating through the development of contextually relevant worlds is exciting. It is perhaps best served by an application containing a feature set designed specifically for content designers to create learning environments. In this paper we suggest some features that might help educational designers build better 'learning as sharing' experiences.

Most edge detection algorithms include three main stages: smoothing, differentiation, and labeling. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of algorithms in which competitive learning is applied first to enhance edges, followed by an edge detector to locate the edges. In this way, more detailed and relatively more unbroken edges can be found as compared to the results when an edge detector is applied alone. The algorithms compared are K-Means, SOM and SOGR for clustering, and Canny and GED for edge detection. Perceptionally, best results were obtained with the GED-SOGR algorithm. The SOGR is also considerably simpler and faster than the SOM algorithm.
