We theoretically investigate a Thouless pumping scheme in the 1D topological Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model for single and multiple band-gaps systems when implemented in a discrete nematic liquid crystal arrangement. For an electrically controlled SSH waveguide array, we numerically demonstrate edge-to-edge light transport at low power levels. On the other hand, at higher powers, the transport is frustrated by light-induced nonlinear defect states, giving rise to robust all-optical switching. © 2022, CC BY.

A well-prepared face detection has become a common thing in this era of technology There are so many applications that utilize face detection for example in smartphone, CCTV, and many more. This research proposed a developed system detection object (face and pattern) using LabVIEW software. LabVIEW is virtual instrument that mimics an instrument simulation software that can display object detectors in real time with IGUI design. The accuracy of the detection that can read object using IGUI in real time was also discussed. This research presents a face detection approach and pattern in a colorless image compare to pattern and face texture that are maintained by Image Capture. This is then used to identify faces and patterns, while other previous research on face detection using 3D stereo vision cameras.

In recent years, advancements in smart cities and multifunctional monitoring have driven new demands for shape reconstruction devices. Multicore fibers (MCFs) are increasingly used due to their parallel data transmission capabilities and multiparameter sensing potential. This paper presents a Rayleigh-scattering-based distributed sensing approach with MCFs for shape reconstruction under multiplanar disturbances. Optical Frequency-Domain Reflectometry (OFDR) is utilized to analyze four cores in a seven-core fiber, enabling shape reconstruction through cross-correlation of spectral responses relative to an unstrained reference. Two configurations are compared: Configuration 1, a spatially separated core arrangement enabling independent strain independent strain measurements to be analyzed with a Frenet-Serret frame modeling and Random Forest (RF) algorithms, achieving a high accuracy with a maximum error of 8.72 × 10 −3 cm; and Configuration 2, a simplified approach analyzing all cores in the same OFDR channel, yielding a higher error of 0.27 cm when a RF algorithm was fed with features derived from the Rayleigh backscattered signal (loss amplitude, strain, spectral shift, and s- and p-polarization) measured by an optical backscatter reflectometer. Three protocols—pure bending, pure torsion, and combined bending/torsion—validate these configurations. The results emphasize this multifunctional MCF-based sensor system’s potential for flexible, integrated shape reconstruction solutions.

The associative property of addition facilitates the change of the group member. If the group members are molecules, can we apply this property to study a chemical reaction? The aim of this paper is to use the associative property of addition to design reaction pathways of methyl acetate hydrolysis in the acid environment. The reaction is found in Alzheimer’s Disease. We evaluate the designed pathways using activation energy obtained from density functional theory calculation. The results show the associative property of addition can be used to design four reaction pathways of the hydrolysis. The calculations show the acidity significantly affected the activation energy. This result agrees with the common knowledge. Hence, we have demonstrated the usefulness of the associative property of addition in designing chemical reaction pathways.

Despite its advantages, conventional soil-cement has limitations in terms of mechanical strength and durability, especially in environments with high humidity or high structural demands. The development of high-performance soil-cement (HPSC) presents significantly superior mechanical properties. The decentralized production of these panels has resulted in a cost reduction of more than 40%, making them an affordable alternative for low-income communities. Even so, providing technical support for the popularization of HPSC is crucial for the advancement of civil construction and to enable the expansion of affordable and sustainable housing for vulnerable communities. This study focuses on the development of a high-performance soil-cement panel, including its manufacturing process and the materials used. The panel was produced using Yellow Argisol soil, found locally in abundant quantities, modified with sand. Measurements of flexural strength and water absorption were carried out, together with a comparison of the strength of high-performance concrete (HPC) found in the literature. The developed panels present an average flexural strength of 6.71 MPa. Additionally, water absorption reached 5.99%, indicating the high performance of this material, which is comparable to high-performance concrete but more economical and sustainable. This contribution confirms the viability of transferring HPSC technology and highlights its social impact on civil construction.

In a single qubit system, a universal quantum classifier can be realised using the data-reuploading technique. In this study, we propose a new quantum classifier applying this technique to bosonic systems and successfully demonstrated it using silicon optical integrated quantum circuits. We established a theory of quantum machine learning algorithm applicable to bosonic systems and implemented a programmable optical circuit combined with an interferometer. Learning and classification using part of the implemented optical quantum circuit with uncorrelated two-photons resulted in a classification with a reproduction rate of approximately 94% in the proof of principle experiment. As this method can be applied to arbitrary two-mod N-photon system, further development of optical quantum classifiers, such as extensions to quantum entangled and multi-photon states, is expected in the future. Topologically stable field configurations appear in many fields of physics, from elementary particles to condensed matter and cosmology. Deep physical relations and common physical features of a large variety of very different solitonic states in these systems arise from the mathematical similarity of phenomenological equations. During the last decade, chiral liquid crystals and chiral magnets took on the role of model objects for the experimental investigation of topological solitons and the understanding of their nonsingular field configurations. This is directly related to the discovery of particle-like chiral skyrmions, which are also considered as promising ingredients for technological applications. Here we introduce a paradigm of facile skyrmionic networks with mutually orthogonal orientations of constituent isolated skyrmions. On the one hand, such networks are envisioned as a novel concept of spintronic devices based, e.g., on gapless skyrmion motion along each other, and are presumably responsible for precursor phenomena near the ordering temperatures of bulk cubic helimagnets. In particular, we demonstrate an interconversion between mutually orthogonal skyrmions: horizontal skyrmions may swirl into an intermediate spring-like state and subsequently squeeze into vertical skyrmions with both polarities. On the other hand, skyrmion tubes are considered as building blocks for particle-like states with more involved internal structure. A family of target-skyrmions, which includes a so far overlooked type with a multiple topological charge, is formed owing to the tendency to minimize the interaction energy between vertical and horizontal skyrmions. The conical phase serves as a suitable background for considered skyrmion evolution. It substantializes the attracting skyrmion-skyrmion interaction in the skyrmionic networks, shapes their internal structure, and guides the nucleation processes. Forecasting model of power generated by wind power plants

The power generated by wind power plants is unstable so forecasting is needed to maintain the power balance in an interconnected system. The purpose of this research is to predict the power generated at the Sidrap and Jeneponto wind power plants. The method used is an optimally pruned extreme learning machine (OPELM). The extreme learning machine (ELM) method is used as a comparison method. The mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) method is used to assess the level of forecasting accuracy. Forecasting power generation with Sidrap wind power plant data using the OPELM method is 0.8970% more accurate than the ELM which is 1.0853%. In general, the OPELM method is more accurate. Forecasting power generation with data from the Jeneponto wind power plant using the OPELM method is 2.4887% more accurate than the ELM method is 2.9984%. These results indicate that linear, sigmoid, and Gaussian activation in the OPELM method can increase accuracy. The OPELM method can be tested in forecasting the power generation at the Sidrap and Jeneponto wind power plants to maintain a power balance in the Sulselbar power grid system.

Bacteriophage (phages) are viruses that exclusively use bacterial cells for propagation, killing the bacterial host in the process. In phage therapy, phages are used to reduce bacterial numbers, thereby curing bacterial infections. Although this principle is conceptually straightforward, its practical application faces several hurdles. In this Primer, the practical aspects of phage therapy are outlined. We introduce the microbiological methods used to prepare and characterize phages and elucidate their interactions with bacteria. The discussion covers how the information in complete phage genome sequences is used, along with how RNA sequencing can enhance our understanding of phage biology. Selection parameters for therapeutic phages for clinical applications and key elements in industrial-scale phage production are provided. A summary of clinical trials both past and present, phage administration and dosing issues is analysed, as well as limitations associated with phage therapy and mitigation strategies. Finally, we speculate on the future of phage therapy.

At present, the smartphone is equipped with several sensors such as Accelerometer, Gravity sensor, and Gyroscope which can be used to recognize human physical activities such as walking upstair and walking downstairs etc. Machine learning is needed to group data and get information. Statistical methods have poor performance in classifying because procedures must be met. To overcome this, an ensemble technique was used. This study proposes the application of the gradientboost ensemble method to classify walking upstair and walking downstairs. The *** system is designed for data retrieval using a smartphone. Then, the dataset will be partitioned into 70% training data and 30% test data. The results show that the performance of the ensemble boosting method produces 81.82% accuracy, 86.11% sensitivity and 77.50% specificity. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.
