Topology can manifest itself in colloids when quantified by invariants like Euler characteristics of nonzero-genus colloidal surfaces, albeit spherical colloidal particles are most often studied, and colloidal particles with complex topology are rarely considered. On the other hand, singular defects and topological solitons often define the physical behavior of the molecular alignment director fields in liquid crystals. Interestingly, nematic liquid crystalline dispersions of colloidal particles allow for probing the interplay between topologies of surfaces and fields, but only a limited number of such cases have been explored so far. Here, we study the hybridization of topological solitons, singular defects, and topologically nontrivial colloidal particles with the genus of surfaces different from zero in a chiral nematic liquid crystal phase. Hybridization occurs when distortions separately induced by colloidal particles and LC solitons overlap, leading to energy minimization-driven redistribution of director field deformations and defects. As a result, hybrid director configurations emerge, combining topological features from both components. We uncover a host of director field configurations complying with topological theorems, which can be controlled by applying electric fields. Rotational and translational dynamics arise due to the nonreciprocal evolution of the director fields in response to alternating electric fields of different frequencies. These findings help define a platform for controlling topologically hyper-complex colloidal structures and dynamics with electrically reconfigurable singular defects and topological solitons induced by colloidal handlebodies. Throughout the industry, pulse width modulation voltage source inverters (PWM-VSI) are commonly utilized with adjustable speed drives (ASD) to control, most commonly, induction motors. Especially in the mining and petroleum industries, long cables connecting motors and inverters are often present, which can cause several problems. As an innovative solution, an alternative system configuration has been previously proposed, in which the rectifier is kept in its typical location, and the inverter bridge and DC bus capacitors are installed near the driven motor. Long cables are used as a DC transmission line, mitigating the high-frequency problems resulting from the inverter-cable-motor interaction. On the other hand, new concerns regarding the reliability of the power devices arise once the inverter is installed in harsh ambient conditions. In this context, this work proposes a reliability analysis of such drive configuration, applying the physics of failure (PoF) approach combined with the design for reliability (DfR) methodology to carry out the design adjustments to achieve the reliability required for the application, focusing on the inverter IGBT modules. Moreover, this paper will evaluate widely accepted multilevel inverter topologies and modulation strategies, verifying those capable of minimizing implementation costs and ensuring adequate reliability indexes for the system—aiming to enable the commercial use of this promising configuration. The results show that a three-level active neutral point clamped inverter (3L-ANPC) topology applying two pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies and 400 A – 6.5 kV IGBTs would be the most appropriate from this study's reliability and feasibility analyses.

In this study, we used a compound vision card consisting of Howell's and Thorington's vision card on both sides, and placed a prism or a Maddox 's lens in the left eye of the subjects to establish the subjective measurement technique of heterophoria. When a prism with 6 prism diopters and the base upward was placed in front of the left eye of the subject to look at the front of the compound vision card at 45 cm, it was observed that the Howell vision card was separated into two vision cards. After confirming the relative position of the point of the upper and lower vision cards, the subject move the paddle on the measuring device to make the paddle overlap the point of the upper vision card, judge the left and right directions of the point and read number of the horizontal base line, and then measure the line of sight deviation of the near horizontal heterophoria. In this study, 5 subjects with normal vision were tested with von Graefe, Howell and This innovative device for near distance horizontal esotropia. The test results showed that 85% of the subjects were exotropia, and the difference of the three measurements was within one prism diopter (±1Δ). It is proved that the reliability of the measuring device is excellent. © 2021 IEEE.

Biofuels are currently the only available bulk renewable fuel. They have, however, limited expansion potential due to high land requirements and associated risks for biodiversity, food security, and land conflicts. We therefore propose to increase output from ethanol refineries in a land-neutral methanol pathway: surplus CO 2 -streams from fermentation are combined with H 2 from renewably powered electrolysis to synthesize methanol. We illustrate this pathway with the Brazilian sugarcane ethanol industry using a spatio-temporal model. The fuel output of existing ethanol generation facilities can be increased by 43%–49% or ~100 TWh without using additional land. This amount is sufficient to cover projected growth in Brazilian biofuel demand in 2030. We identify a trade-off between renewable energy generation technologies: wind power requires the least amount of land whereas a mix of wind and solar costs the least. In the cheapest scenario, green methanol is competitive to fossil methanol at an average carbon price of 95€ tCO 2 −1 .

Estimating action plans for smart poultry houses

In poultry farming, the systematic choice, update, and implementation of periodic (t) action plans define the feed conversion rate (FCRhti), which is an acceptable measure for successful production. Appropriate action plans provide tailored resources for broilers, allowing them to grow within the so-called thermal comfort zone, without wast or lack of resources. Although the implementation of an action plan is automatic, its configuration depends on the knowledge of the specialist, tending to be inefficient and error-prone, besides to result in different FCRhti for each poultry house. In this article, we claim that the specialist’s perception can be reproduced, to some extent, by computational intelligence. By combining deep learning and genetic algorithm techniques, we show how action plans can adapt their performance over the time, based on previous well succeeded plans. We also implement a distributed network infrastructure that allows to replicate our method over distributed poultry houses, for their smart, interconnected, and adaptive control. A supervision system is provided as interface to users. Experiments conducted over real data show that our method improves 5% on the performance of the most productive specialist, staying very close to the optimal FCR(t).MSC Codes 68T35 (Primary) 93C40 (Secondary) Copyright © 2020, The Authors. The fractional differential equation Lβu = f posed on a compact metric graph is considered, where β > 0 and L = κ2 − ∇(a∇) is a second-order elliptic operator equipped with certain vertex conditions and sufficiently smooth and positive coefficients κ, a. We demonstrate the existence of a unique solution for a general class of vertex conditions and derive the regularity of the solution in the specific case of Kirchhoff vertex conditions. These results are extended to the stochastic setting when f is replaced by Gaussian white noise. For the deterministic and stochastic settings under generalized Kirchhoff vertex conditions, we propose a numerical solution based on a finite element approximation combined with a rational approximation of the fractional power L−β. For the resulting approximation, the strong error is analyzed in the deterministic case, and the strong mean squared error as well as the L2(Γ×Γ)error of the covariance function of the solution are analyzed in the stochastic setting. Explicit rates of convergences are derived for all cases. Admission of new students in 2019 through zoning still faces many obstacles, one of which is the readiness of the application to determine the distance of a student's house from the nearest recommended school. The purpose of this study is to provide better recommendations regarding the shortest and most accurate distance in the zoning system for admission of junior high school students in Malang by using the Generate and Test algorithm without having to do it manually or using other map applications. The results of this study indicate that the distance value obtained from the haversine formula corresponds to the original distance measured through a zoning application that applies the Generate and Test algorithm to measure the closest distance from the student's location. The recommended distance is given through a process of repetition and comparison of nodes. By using the generate and test algorithm for the search process the shortest distance from the user to the destination school has an average time of 6.2MB, the level of accuracy is the same as the Haversine calculation. © 2020 IEEE.

TargetNet: Functional microRNA target prediction with deep neural networks

Motivation: MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play pivotal roles in gene expression regulation by binding to target sites of messenger RNAs (mRNAs). While identifying functional targets of miRNAs is of utmost importance, their prediction remains a great challenge. Previous computational algorithms have major limitations. They use conservative candidate target site (CTS) selection criteria mainly focusing on canonical site types, rely on laborious and time-consuming manual feature extraction, and do not fully capitalize on the information underlying miRNA-CTS interactions. Results: In this paper, we introduce TargetNet, a novel deep learning-based algorithm for functional miRNA target prediction. To address the limitations of previous approaches, TargetNet has three key components: (1) relaxed CTS selection criteria accommodating irregularities in the seed region, (2) a novel miRNA-CTS sequence encoding scheme incorporating extended seed region alignments, and (3) a deep residual network-based prediction model. The proposed model was trained with miRNA-CTS pair datasets and evaluated with miRNA-mRNA pair datasets. TargetNet advances the previous state-of-theart algorithms used in functional miRNA target classification. The successful implementation of smart grids depends on energy efficiency, mostly relying on the operation of electricity source infrastructure. The combination of energy sources undoubtedly provides complexity in real applications. Some of the challenges for a smart grids comes from the intermittent renewable energy characteristics such as bioenergy, geothermal, hydropower, solar, ocean power, and wind energy to the base load energy such as natural gas, coal, and nuclear. This paper aims to review the implementation of current advances of smart grids from combined energy mix sources. The review includes major components of smart grids, i.e. power plants, monitoring systems, substations, power transmission and distribution, controllers and smart meters. The review also investigates the state of the art contribution of power electronics, artificial intelligence and Internet of Things to more significant optimization, safety and efficiency in these areas. The results are expected to provide a further gap analysis of applicable technologies and best practices in mixed electricity generation sources. The final result will also consider its application in an archipelago country such as Indonesia.
