As physical obstacles, vehicles have significant impacts on the efficient propagations of safety-related information in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) by frequently obstructing the LOS links between transmitters and receivers. Obstructing effect will diminish the effective coverage of safety-related information and incur severe impact on road safety. However, this impact has not been addressed effectively. In this paper, we first present the definition of broadcast efficiency as the metric for quantizing the obstructing effect. We investigate the optimization issue for mitigating the impact of obstructing effect on the propagation of safety-related information and propose a graph theory-based optimization algorithm. For a distributed implementation of this optimization in VANETs, we further propose the maximum broadcast efficiency relaying (MBER) algorithm. MBER maximizes the effective coverage of information, meanwhile, meets delay and reliability constraints by incorporating broadcast efficiency and propagation distance in relay contention. Simulation results demonstrate that MBER promotes the effective coverage of safety-related information in VANETs with varying vehicular distribution. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

Based on the brushless dc motor driven by a four-switch three-phase inverter (FSTPI), a current control scheme is proposed to reduce the current ripple of both the normal conduction region and the commutation region. Assuming c-phase winding is connected to the middle point of a dc-link capacitance, in the normal conduction region when a-phase and b-phase windings conduct, the current of c-phase may not be zero because of c-phase back electromotive force. The proposed strategy adds two regulating vectors into each control cycle based on the traditional PWM scheme, and controls the c-phase current to be zero by controlling the working time of the regulating vectors in each control cycle. In the commutation region, the noncommutated phase or the outgoing phase switch is modulated by comparing the change rate of the incoming and outgoing phase currents to maintain the noncommutated phase current constant. Compared with the traditional current control strategy, good control effect is kept in both the normal conduction region and the commutation region by accurately controlling the working time of the voltage vectors. The proposed strategy does not need to adjust the parameters of the controller, and it is simple and easy to implement. The experimental results prove the correctness and effectiveness of the control strategy. © 2013 IEEE.

Biomass concentration is an important indicator of production rate in polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) fermentation process. In current practice, measurement of biomass concentration is done off-line by laboratory analysis that is unsuitable for online process monitoring and control. Soft-sensor is often used as an alternative that provides an estimate of hard to measure parameters from easy to measure process data. However, most of these studies use simulated data or data generated from mathematical model that was developed without full consideration of process and measurement uncertainty. In this study, a soft-sensor is developed from real production data for PHA fermentation in pilot-scale bioreactor with the appropriate data pre-processing techniques applied to process data that was obtained from this system. Multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network is used to estimate biomass concentration using secondary process parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), temperature, pH and agitation speed as inputs. Different models are developed based on different batches of production data and various network architecture in order to study the appropriate integration of process data and network topology that gives the best model accuracy. Results indicate that the biomass soft-sensor developed using MLP-ANN provides a better estimate of biomass in comparison to radial basis function (RBF) neural network and support vector regression (SVR) methods. The developed soft-sensor can be further used in monitoring and control of production output.

This paper seeks the optimization of soot-blowing operations for heat transfer surfaces in coal- fired power plant boiler. A preventive soot blowing strategy based on state of health prediction for heat transfer surface was proposed. The average state of health of heat transfer surface was forecasted as the threshold to draft preventive soot blowing strategy. According to the theory of renewal process, an optimization model with the system prediction interval and the threshold of preventive soot blowing operation as the optimization variables and minimize average energy losses as the target function was established. By using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), the optimal preventive cycle and soot-blowing threshold were obtained, and the long-run average cost rate was the lowest. The model is validated with experiment data of a 300MW coal-fired power plant boiler and the parameters of prediction model are obtained. The results can verify the feasibility of proposed strategy. It can be used as the guide for the optimization of soot blowing in coal-fired power plant to improve the energy conservation level.

In this paper, we study the semi-global output containment control problem of a multi-agent system in the presence of actuator saturation over a directed network. The leader and follower agents are of different dynamics, and the follower agents are affected by disturbances generated by the leader agents through directed paths in the communication topology. The control objective of the output containment control is to drive the output trajectories of the follower agents to converge to the convex hull spanned by the outputs of the leader agents in the presence of disturbances. Low gain feedback containment protocols are constructed based on the output regulation approach and distributed observers. It is shown that semi-global output containment control can be achieved by the proposed protocols, if each follower agent is connected to at least one leader agent through a directed path in the communication topology. Simulation results verify the theoretical conclusions.

This paper studies the global leader-following consensus problem for a multi-agent system using event-triggered bounded *** the follower agents and the leader agent are described by a chain of integrators of an arbitrary *** event-triggered control law is constructed for each follower agent and an event-triggering strategy is designed for updating the control *** event-triggered control laws are shown to achieve global leader-following consensus when the communication topology among the follower agents is connected and the leader is a neighbor of at least one follower *** absence of the Zeno behavior is established.A self-triggering strategy is also proposed to avoid continuous verification of the triggering *** results are given to illustrate the theoretical results.
