Prediction of hard rock TBM penetration rate using least square support vector machine

The prediction of tunnel boring machine (TBM) penetration rate is helpful to plan construction time and to control cost. This paper studies on modeling the penetration rate and the rock mass parameters via least square support vector machine (LS-SVM). These rock properties include uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), Brazilian tensile strength (BTS), peak slope index (PSI), distance between planes of weakness (DPW) and the alpha angle. The correlation between the rock parameters and the measured rate of penetration (ROP) is first investigated via LS-SVM. Then the necessity of normalizing the rock parameters is discussed. Finally, comparisons between the LS-SVM and other methods are presented to demonstrate the applicability of LS-SVM for predicting ROP.

This paper investigates variation of infinite horizon (IH) performance of Model Predictive control (MPC) without constraints as the optimization horizon changes. By exploring properties of the Difference Riccati Equations (DRE), an upper bound and a lower bound of the ratio between variation of IH performance of MPC and finite horizon (FH) optimal cost are obtained. The result shows the dynamic behavior of IH performance of closed-loop MPC systems as the optimization horizon varies.

A multiple anti-windup loops under multiple dynamic activations strategy is proposed to enlarge the domain of attraction. This work is parallel to the multiple activation case with static *** traditional anti-windup compensator is activated immediately as the saturation *** was shown recently that,by delaying the activation of the anti-windup mechanism to a certain level,the performance can be improved for the closed-loop *** was further shown that better performance can be obtained by activating an anti-windup mechanism in anticipation of actuator saturation,in comparison with the delayed activation *** paper considers the anti-windup design problem of enlarging domain of attraction under a dynamic multiple activation *** this multiple activation scheme,the anticipatory,delayed and immediate activation mechanism is incorporated in the same framework simultaneously.A furthermore significant performance improvements over both the immediate and delayed activation schemes can be *** proposed dynamic multiple activation scheme established a unified anti-windup framework and can be readily extended to the traditional immediate,delayed and anticipatory activation anti-windup mechanisms.

Anti-windup design is an intuitive and efficient way to deal with input saturation *** the classic antiwindup design,the compensator is set to be activated immediately as the control signal saturates the *** important innovation in the anti-windup activation mechanism is to delay the activation of the anti-windup mechanism until the saturation reaches to a certain severity which led to a performance improvement of the resulting closed-loop *** recently,it was shown that by activating a static anti-windup mechanism in anticipation of actuator saturation,significant further performance improvements can be achieved in comparison with the delayed activation *** addition,we have combined both the delayed and anticipatory activation mechanisms,to develop the multiple activation strategy,in terms of(?) gain *** paper furthermore considers the problem of enlarging domain of attraction and demonstrates that the multiple activation of a static multiple feedback anti-windup mechanism would also lead to significant performance improvements over both the immediate and delayed activation schemes.

As the remote areas can not be connected to large electric system, using local renewable resources and a certain capacity of energy storage devices to construct a microgrid for power supply will be the only choice. This paper introduces a new energy management strategy of islanded microgrid based on power flow control. The islanded microgrid utilizes the hybrid AC/DC structure. Battery storage system keeps the DC bus voltage constant, PV array as a current source is connected to the DC bus and a main DC/AC inverter in VF mode is used to provide the voltage and frequency references for the AC bus. In this energy management strategy, power flow control is applied to regulate the SOC of batteries in the certain range, control the batteries to avoid over-discharge/over-charge and frequent transition between charge and discharge by the means of output power limitation of the solar energy, switching wind turbine and controllable load and so on. The PSCAD test results show the feasibility and effectiveness of this energy management strategy. © 2012 IEEE.

Condition monitoring power semiconductor devices can inform converter maintenance and reduce damage. This paper presents a method to monitor bond-wire failure in IGBT power module by detecting the change of its exterior electrical signals. It is shown that gate-emitter voltage VGE, saturated collector-emitter voltage VCE(sat), collector-emitter voltage V CE and collector current IC during turn off process, are affected by power module bond wire failure. To explain the reasons of the phenomena, theoretical analysis based on the damaged IGBT module physical structure is proposed and simulation results are obtained. Accordingly the test circuit bench is constructed and experiments are conducted. Theoretical analysis is validated with experimentally obtained results. © 2012 IEEE.

The objective of this study was to compare and correlate the Portable Ultra Sound (US) measuring technique to the skinfold measuring technique (SF) to estimate body fat percentage (%F) in young adults. Sixty military were evaluated, all males, divided in two groups: Group 1 (normal) composed by 30 military with Body Mass Index (BMI) until 24.99 kg/m(2) and Group 2 (overweight) composed by 30 military with BMI > 25 kg/m(2). Weight, height, skinfolds and ultrasound were measured in 9 points (triceps, subscapular, biceps, chest, medium axillary, abdominal, suprailiac, thigh and calf). Body fat average values obtained by skinfold thickness and ultrasound measurements were 13.25 +/- 6.32 % and 12.73 +/- 5.95 % respectively. Despite significant differences in measurements of each anatomical site, it was possible to verify that the total final body fat percentage calculated by both techniques did not present significant differences and that overweight group presented greater similarity between the values obtained using caliper and ultrasound equipment.

Because of large fluctuations and strong randomness of active power generated by renewable energy resources, taking into account the constraints such as battery life cycle, a new battery energy storage system control method based on real-time state-of-charge and variable filter time constant is presented. This method could compensate the fluctuation composition of a particular frequency band of power. At the same time, filter time constant is adjusted in order to stabilize the value of SOC in a certain range, and over-charging and over-discharging of the battery is avoided. A photovoltaic (PV) and battery hybrid system modeled by PSCAD is tested to verify the validity of this method. © 2012 IEEE.

This study aimed to test a protocol of measurements based on Biophotogrammetry to Analysis of Respiratory Mechanics (BARM) in healthy children. Seventeen normal spirometric children (six male and 11 female) were tested. Their performed maneuvers of forced inspiratory vital capacity were recorded in the supine position. The images were acquired by a digital camera, laterally placed to the trunk. Surface markers allowed that the files, exported to CorelDraw (R) software, were processed by irregular trapezoids paths. Compartments were defined in the thoracic (TX), abdominal (AB) and the chest wall (CW). They were defined at the end of an inspiration and expiration, both maximum, controlled by a digital spirometer. The result showed that the measured areas at the inspiratory and expiratory periods were statistically different (p<0.05). It reflects the mobility of CW and compartments. In conclusion, the proposed method can identify the breathing pattern of the measured subject using images in two dimensions (2D).
