Wind is one of the fastest growing sources of green energy in the last few decades. A special attention has been recently focused on the wind ramps, sudden changes in wind power production caused by surges of wind speed (both increases and decreases). In this paper, sensitivity analysis of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method is preformed on wind speed dataset with the 5 minute time resolution. Principal Component Analysis results can be used to evaluate conditional probability of forth-coming wind ramp event. Advantage of PCA method compared to conventional approaches is that numerical weather prediction model producing wind forecasts is not required. Two important input parameters are analyzed: the wind ramp duration and the wind ramp magnitude, respectively. Results show rapid increase of the first principal component value, when ramp duration is prolonging, nevertheless other two components seems to be insensitive in this case. Boxplots are illustrated for simple comparability of resultant distributions. The number of down ramp events is always lower than the number of up ramps, and with increasing percentage threshold these numbers are decreasing exponentially. Moreover trends of average PCA values for down ramp events are not monotone with significant jumps and drops. © 2016 IEEE.

This paper proposes a solution to traffic monitoring and planning by using nonintrusive traffic sensors only, namely Virtual Detection Zone(VDZ) and Closed Circuit Television(CCTV). We propose that our novel method, VDZ with CCTV snap shots, when combined as a system, can replace the traditional system using inductive loop detector sensor. The latter is in disadvantage because inductive loop detectors need to be physically embedded in to a highwaysurface. Our previous works have shown that our system can provide the empirical data to construct Fundamental Diagrams and to calibrate a chosen model of the target highway, by using only seven VDZ agents which have carried GPS enabled smartphones, together with snapshots from fifteen existing CCTV, on Tangerang to Jakarta highway(21 km distance) over a period of three months. Our system is better than the traditional system, because it: can show zero speeds at totally jammed density, uses only one GPS coordinate to form a speed aware zone, costs less to build and is more practical to implement, especially for developing countries like Indonesia. By adopting and modifying Cell Transmission Model or CTM, a variant Macro model, our system can give short term predictions for travel time, and travel distance. Graphical and tabular comparisons are presented to highlight the worsening or improvement effects on traffic conditions when certain highway topology parameters have been changed for our target road. For example, simulated on our already calibrated model on our target highway, an addition of 3 off ramps at km 13, 15 and 17, would cause a reduction of vehicle travel time by up to 17.6% between minutes 75 to 230, which also mean a reduction of traffic jam. These results show that this system is potentially beneficial not only for commuters, but also for highway designers and government road authority.

This paper proposes a simple, yet effective, modification to scaling factor and crossover rate adaptation in Success-History based Adaptive Differential Evolution (SHADE), which can be used as a framework to all SHADE-based algorithms. The performance impact of the proposed method is shown on the CEC2015 benchmark set in 10 and 30 dimensions for both SHADE and L-SHADE (SHADE with linear decrease of population size) algorithms.

We conjecture that in highly developed economies business cycles show positive feedback mechanism in which the households amplify the crises by refraining to replace old durable goods to new ones. On the one hand, families do not suffer much if they stop buying new consumer durables, such as automobiles, the example we use in this paper, because it is perfectly rational for them to continue to drive their "old" vehicle for quite a while without much welfare loss. On the other hand, families drawing salary from the given sector do suffer from the decline of the demand and if the crisis is deep and the sector has strong influence on the entire economy, all households are effected at the end of the day. In the framework of a two-sector economy agent-based model, we illustrate our thesis with the fluctuations in US car sales in the period 2006-2014. Subsequently we use an agent-based simulation and show that our conjectures do hold if applied to real-life statistical data. © Budapest University of Technology and Economics. All rights reserved.

In this paper, an optimal distributed approach is presented to solve the economic dispatch (ED) problem in an islanded microgrid. Active and reactive resources are taken into account in the optimization problem aiming to consider the operational requirements of the electrical system. The optimization framework is based on primal-dual constrained decomposition. Additionally, two consensus algorithms are develop to be executed in parallel by each unit, aiming to estimate locally the value of the dual variables. Convergence is guaranteed under the common convexity assumptions. Simulations were performed on the standard IEEE 30-bus system considering dispatchable and renewable generation units. The capability of the algorithm to responds in variations in load consumption, renewable generation and faults in units were assessed. Result shows the flexibility and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this paper, a generalization of the λ-Method for the economic dispatch (ED) problem in an islanded electrical distribution system (EDS) is presented. The proposed approach is based on primal-dual constrained decomposition, which allows decomposing the centralized problem into small-scale problems that can be solved in parallel and independently by each unit. Active and reactive resources are taken into account in order to consider the technical operation of the EDS. A technical implementation based on the classic droop control is also proposed, in order to reduce the communication needs of the units and the leader unit. To assess the performance of the proposed approach, simulations were performed on the IEEE 118-bus system. The capability of the algorithm to respond to unexpected changes in load consumption, non-dispatchable generation, and faults in units were assessed. Finally, the flexibility and model independence characteristics of this approach are also shown considering prohibited operational zones (POZ) for some units.

Context. Identifying black holes is essential for comprehending the development of stars and uncovering novel principles of physics. Gravitational microlensing provides an exceptional opportunity to examine an undetectable population of black holes in the Milky Way. In particular, long-lasting events are likely to be associated with massive lenses, including black holes. Aims. We present an analysis of the Gaia18ajz microlensing event, reported by the Gaia Science Alerts system, which has exhibited a long timescale and features indicative of the annual microlensing parallax effect. Our objective is to estimate the parameters of the lens based on the best-fitting model. Methods. We utilized photometric data obtained from the Gaia satellite and terrestrial observatories to investigate a variety of microlensing models and calculate the most probable mass and distance to the lens, taking into consideration a Galactic model as a prior. Subsequently, we applied a mass-brightness relation to evaluate the likelihood that the lens is a main sequence star. We also describe DarkLensCode (DLC), an open-source routine which computes the distribution of probable lens mass, distance and luminosity employing the Galaxy priors on stellar density and velocity for microlensing events with detected microlensing parallax. Results. We modelled Gaia18ajz event and found its two possible models with most likely Einstein timescale of 316+36−30 days and 299+25−22 days. Applying Galaxy priors for stellar density and motion, we calculated the most probable lens mass of 4.9+5.4−2.3 M☉ located at 1.14+0.75−0.57 kpc or 11.1+10.3−4.7 M☉ located at 1.31+0.80−0.60 kpc. Our analysis of the blended light suggests that the lens is likely a dark remnant of stellar evolution, rather than a main sequence star. Conclusions. © 2024, CC BY.

Finding K contingency list in power networks using a new model of dependency

Smart grid systems are composed of power and communication network components. The components in either network exhibit complex dependencies on components in its own as well as the other network to drive their functionality. Existing, models fail to capture these complex dependencies. In this paper, we restrict to the dependencies in the power network and propose the Multi-scale Implicative Interdependency Relation (MIIR) model that address the existing limitations. A formal description of the model along with its working dynamics and a brief validation with respect to the 2011 Southwest blackout are provided. Utilizing the MIIR model, the K Contingency List problem is proposed. For a given time instant, the problem solves for a set of K entities in a power network which when failed at that time instant would cause the maximum number of entities to fail eventually. Owing to the problem being NP-complete we devised a Mixed Integer Program (MIP) to obtain the optimal solution and a polynomial time sub-optimal heuristic. The efficacy of the heuristic with respect to the MIP is compared by using different bus system data. In general, the heuristic is shown to provide near optimal solution at a much faster time than the MIP. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Quantitative implementation strategies for safety controllers

We consider the symbolic controller synthesis approach to enforce safety specifications on perturbed, nonlinear control systems. In general, in each state of the system several control values might be applicable to enforce the safety requirement and in the implementation one has the burden of picking a particular control value out of possibly many. We present a class of implementation strategies to obtain a controller with certain performance guarantees. This class includes two existing implementation strategies from the literature, based on discounted payoff and mean-payoff games. We unify both approaches by using games characterized by a single discount factor determining the implementation. We evaluate different implementations from our class experimentally on two case studies. We show that the choice of the discount factor has a significant influence on the average long-term costs, and the best performance guarantee for the symbolic model does not result in the best implementation. Comparing the optimal choice of the discount factor here with the previously proposed values, the costs differ by a factor of up to 50. Our approach therefore yields a method to choose systematically a good implementation for safety controllers with quantitative objectives. Copyright © 2017, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In this paper will be described a new way of using cognitive approaches in personalized cryptography algorithms. Personal information may be used in creation advanced security protocols, as well as personal keys for cryptosystems, and information encoding procedures. Such protocols may play important role in advanced secure management applications. Additionally some behavioral features allow to generate unique sequences, which also may be used in modern cryptographic application. Such possibilities will be described in this paper.
