Wind is one of the fastest growing sources of green energy in the last few decades. A special attention has been recently focused on the wind ramps, sudden changes in wind power production caused by surges of wind speed (both increases and decreases). In this paper, sensitivity analysis of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method is preformed on wind speed dataset with the 5 minute time resolution. Principal Component Analysis results can be used to evaluate conditional probability of forthcoming wind ramp event. Advantage of PCA method compared to conventional approaches is that numerical weather prediction model producing wind forecasts is not required. Two important input parameters are analyzed: the wind ramp duration and the wind ramp magnitude, respectively. Results show rapid increase of the first principal component value, when ramp duration is prolonging, nevertheless other two components seems to be insensitive in this case. Boxplots are illustrated for simple comparability of resultant distributions. The number of down ramp events is always lower than the number of up ramps, and with increasing percentage threshold these numbers are decreasing exponentially. Moreover trends of average PCA values for down ramp events are not monotone with significant jumps and drops.

Grey Wolf Optimizer-Based Approach to the Tuning of Pi-Fuzzy Controllers with a Reduced Process Parametric Sensitivity

This paper suggests the use of Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) algorithms to tune the parameters of Takagi-Sugeno proportional-integral-fuzzy controllers (PI-FCs) for a class of nonlinear servo systems. The servo systems are modelled by second order dynamics plus a saturation and dead zone static nonlinearity. The GWO algorithms solve the optimization problems that minimize discrete-time objective functions expressed as the weighted sum of the squared control error and of the squared output sensitivity function in order to achieve the parametric sensitivity reduction. The output sensitivity function is derived from the sensitivity model with respect to the modification of the process gain, and fuzzy control systems with a reduced process gain sensitivity are offered. Three parameters of Takagi-Sugeno PI-FCs are obtained by a new cost-effective tuning approach. Experimental results related to the angular position control of a laboratory servo system validate the tuning approach. © 2016

Minimization of energy consumption of environmental monitoring systems is important to ensure their extended operational lifetime and low maintenance costs. One possible way to conserve energy is the use of low-frequency analog-to-digital conversion devices and associated data sampling techniques. In this paper, a new approach to lowering sampling frequency using model-based data imputation is proposed and discussed. Recorded data is used to develop models based on time-delay recurrent neural network. While sampling at low frequencies, the models are used to predict future and missing values. The models are updated when predicted values differ significantly from the actual measurements. The proposed approach is demonstrated using actual measurements sampled at different frequencies. The results are thoroughly analyzed from the perspective of approximation error and energy savings.

Formation energy is one of the most important properties of a compound that is directly related to its stability. More negative the formation energy, the more stable the compound is likely to be. Here we describe the development and deployment of predictive models for formation energy, given the chemical composition of the material. The data-driven models described here are built using nearly 100,000 Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, which is a quantum mechanical simulation technique based on the electron density within the crystal structure of the material. These models are deployed in an online web-tool that takes a list of material compositions as input, generates over hundred composition-based attributes for each material and feeds them into the predictive models to obtain the predictions of formation energy. The online formation energy predictor is available at http://***/FEpredictor.

In [6] the authors conjecture that if every vertex of an infinite square grid is reachable from a pebble distribution, then the covering ratio of this distribution is at most 3.25. First we present such a distribution with covering ratio 3.5, disproving the conjecture. The authors in the above paper also claim to prove that the covering ratio of any pebble distribution is at most 6.75. The proof contains some errors. We present a few interesting pebble distributions that this proof does not seem to cover and highlight some other difficulties of this topic.

Based on the formulation of the problem to be discussed by the writer is to know: the influence of 0.4 mm spark gap variation, and standard spark plug type, to CO and HC, the influence of 0.5 mm spark plug gap variation, and variation of platinum spark plug on CO and HC, influence of spark gap variation 0,6mm, and variation of iridium spark plug type to CO and HC emission Method used to obtain data needed to support the writer that is research method with experiment, literature study method or literature study The result of this research concludes that there is spark gap influence 0.4 mm, with variations of standard plug, platinum and iridium spark plugs against CO and HC emissions, where the lowest CO value is 0.27% and HC 98 ppm, 0.5 mm spark plug with lowest CO 0.15% and HC 46 ppm, 0.6 mm spark plug gap the lowest CO value of 0.19% and HC 24 ppm. In the context of Tinto's Model of Institutional Departure, faculty support is critical to academic integration, which in turn is an essential element of persistence in college. Thus, understanding students' perceptions of faculty support in varied settings can provide insight into student satisfaction, performance, and persistence in engineering programs. In this study, focus groups were conducted with 175 students from five different institutions and a variety of engineering and computer science majors. The institutions in this study included a small women's college, a historically black university, a small private university, a medium size teaching university, and a large public research university. Focus group transcripts were coded and analyzed qualitatively. Findings from this analysis show that in some settings, despite a perceived lack of formal, in-class faculty support, students are still able to find faculty support outside the classroom, while in other settings this informal support is also perceived as lacking. In general, smaller environments with smaller student-to-faculty ratios appear to support stronger perceptions of support, although through different pathways. A small class size does not guarantee that students will perceive greater faculty support in that class. Large class sizes are not automatically detrimental for students, but they can be if students in those classes feel a lack of faculty support or availability both in and out of the classroom. With regard to institution type, the notion that undergraduates perceive lower levels of faculty support at research institutions holds true. This study has not verified whether the level of faculty support is actually less at research institutions, but only that students' self-reported perceptions of that support were lower at the research-focused institution when compared to teaching-focused institutions in this study. Device-to-Device (D2D) communication is an important component for 5G networks. Traditional D2D communications are mainly within the same cell. However, due to the reduced cell sizes, and the long communication range among mobile devices, the issues in D2D communication across cells have not yet been well addressed. In this paper, we first introduce an operation protocol to support cross-cell D2D communications underlaying cellular networks, then propose a hypergraph based resource allocation scheme to optimize the sum rate over the shared resource. In a hypergraph, the D2D and cellular users are regarded as vertices, and hyperedges represent mutual interference. For efficient interference coordination, the hypergraph is partitioned into different clusters corresponding to different channels. Simulation results demonstrate that the scheme efficiently leads to a good performance on the sum rate.
