This paper presents a Hierarchal Cascaded Multilevel Converter (HCMC) for continuous uniform SOC operation. The proposed HCMC has a hybrid structure of half-bridge converters and H-bridge converters and the voltage can be cascaded to reach a high level at two hierarchical levels: the half-bridge level and H-bridge level. The converter has the features of high voltage and high power application capability and modular design for cost reduction and reliability improvement. Continuous uniform SOC operation can be achieved via the proposed converter without adding additional balancing circuits. Simulation studies have been carried out to verify the performance of the proposed converter.

The aim of the study was to determine the influence of the laser processing on the properties of electro-spark coatings. The properties were assessed by analyzing the coating microstructure, X-ray radiation, microhardness, corrosion resistance, porosity and tribological tests. In addition, the paper presents the results of measurements and analysis of electrical pulse during ESD. The tests were carried out on WC-Cu coating (the anode) obtained by electro spark deposition over carbon steel C45 (the cathode) and molten with a laser beam. The coatings were deposited by means of the EIL-8A and they were laser treated with the Nd:YAG. The tests show that the laser-treated electro-spark deposited WC-Cu coatings are characterized by lower hardness and friction force, higher seizure resistance, roughness. The laser treatment process causes the homogenization of the chemical composition, the structure refinement and the healing of microcracks and pores of the electro-spark deposited coatings. Laser treated electro-spark deposited coatings are likely to be applied in sliding friction pairs and as protective coatings.

Information is a key success factor influencing the performance of decision makers, specifically the quality of their decisions. Nowadays, sheer amounts of data are available for organizations to analyze. Data is considered the raw material of the 21 st century, and abundance is assumed with today's 15 billion devices [aka Things!] already connected to the Internet. Accordingly, solutions need to be studied and provided in order to handle and extract value and knowledge from these datasets. Furthermore, decision makers need to be able to gain valuable insights from such rapidly changing data of high volume, velocity, variety, veracity, and value by using big data analytics. This paper aims to research how big data analytics can be integrated into the decision making process. Accordingly, using a design science methodology, the “Big – Data, Analytics, and Decisions” (B-DAD) framework was developed in order to map big data tools, architectures, and analytics to the different decision making phases. The ultimate objective and contribution of the framework is using big data analytics to enhance and support decision making in organizations, by integrating big data analytics into the decision making process. Consequently, an experiment in the retail industry was administered to test the framework. Accordingly, results showed added value when integrating big data analytics into the decision making process.

We present a system for activity recognition from passive RFID data using a deep convolutional neural network. We directly feed the RFID data into a deep convolutional neural network for activity recognition instead of selecting features and using a cascade structure that first detects object use from RFID data followed by predicting the activity. Because our system treats activity recognition as a multi-class classification problem, it is scalable for applications with large number of activity classes. We tested our system using RFID data collected in a trauma room, including 14 hours of RFID data from 16 actual trauma resuscitations. Our system outperformed existing systems developed for activity recognition and achieved similar performance with process-phase detection as systems that require wearable sensors or manually-generated input. We also analyzed the strengths and limitations of our current deep learning architecture for activity recognition from RFID data. © 2016 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

Adipose tissue (AT) is a complex connective tissue with a high relative proportion of adipocytes, which are specialized cells with the ability to store lipids in large droplets. AT is found in multiple discrete depots throughout the body, where it serves as the primary repository for excess calories. In addition, AT has an important role in functions as diverse as insulation, immunity and regulation of metabolic homeostasis. The Human Cell Atlas Adipose Bionetwork was established to support the generation of single-cell atlases of human AT as well as the development of unified approaches and consensus for cell annotation. Here, we provide a first roadmap from this bionetwork, including our suggested cell annotations for humans and mice, with the aim of describing the state of the field and providing guidelines for the production, analysis, interpretation and presentation of AT single-cell data. © 2025. We report results of systematic analysis of various modes in the flatband lattice, based on the diamond-chain model with the on-site cubic nonlinearity, and its double version with the linear on-site mixing between the two lattice fields. In the single-chain system, a full analysis is presented, first, for the single nonlinear cell, making it possible to find all stationary states, viz., antisymmetric, symmetric, and asymmetric ones, including an exactly investigated symmetry-breaking bifurcation of the subcritical type. In the nonlinear infinite single-component chain, compact localized states (CLSs) are found in an exact form too, as an extension of known compact eigenstates of the linear diamond chain. Their stability is studied by means of analytical and numerical methods, revealing a nontrivial stability boundary. In addition to the CLSs, various species of extended states and exponentially localized lattice solitons of symmetric and asymmetric types are also studied, by means of numerical calculations and variational approximation. As a result, existence and stability areas are identified for these modes. Finally, the linear version of the double diamond chain is solved in an exact form, producing two split flatbands in the system's spectrum.

Analyzing large-scale multiuser molecular communication via 3D stochastic geometry

Information delivery using chemical molecules is an integral part of biology at multiple distance scales and has attracted recent interest in bioengineering and communication theory. Potential applications include cooperative networks with a large number of simple devices that could be randomly located (e.g., due to mobility). This paper presents the first tractable analytical model for the collective signal strength due to randomly-placed transmitters in a three-dimensional (3D) large-scale molecular communication system, either with or without degradation in the propagation environment. Transmitter locations in an unbounded and homogeneous fluid are modelled as a homogeneous Poisson point process. By applying stochastic geometry, analytical expressions are derived for the expected number of molecules absorbed by a fully-absorbing receiver or observed by a passive receiver. The bit error probability is derived under ON/OFF keying and either a constant or adaptive decision threshold. Results reveal that the combined signal strength increases proportionately with the transmitter density, and the minimum bit error probability can be improved by introducing molecule degradation. Furthermore, the analysis of the system can be generalized to other receiver designs and other performance characteristics in large-scale molecular communication systems. We investigate beamforming and artificial noise generation at the secondary transmitters to establish secure transmission in large scale spectrum sharing networks, where multiple noncolluding eavesdroppers attempt to intercept the secondary transmission. We develop a comprehensive analytical framework to accurately assess the secrecy performance under the primary users' quality of service constraint. Our aim is to characterize the impact of beamforming and artificial noise generation (BF&AN) on this complex large scale network. We first derive exact expressions for the average secrecy rate and the secrecy outage probability. We then derive an easy-To-evaluate asymptotic average secrecy rate and asymptotic secrecy outage probability when the number of antennas at the secondary transmitter goes to infinity. Our results show that the equal power allocation between the useful signal and artificial noise is not always the best strategy to achieve maximum average secrecy rate in large scale spectrum sharing networks. Another interesting observation is that the advantage of BF&AN over BF on the average secrecy rate is lost when the aggregate interference from the primary and secondary transmitters is strong, such that it overtakes the effect of the generated AN. © 1972-2012 IEEE.

The concept of security performance emerges as the core attribute when cloud-based systems need to process data flows through different countries. To effectively address the cloud security issues through a territorial perspective, it is crucial to focus on the initial objectives of the Terms of Service as issued by the cloud service operator or provider. In this paper, a cloud-based service scenario where sensitive data are transferred and managed in a cross-border manner is assessed. The threats definition process considers the adoption of mobile devices. The paper focuses on the security assessment process and on information reconnaissance which in turn leads to the cloud defence boundary's exploitation. Also, the issue of how the service level objectives (SLOs) may affect security and privacy issues in a cloud-based environment is addressed.

Intelligent decision support systems may be required to adapt to changes in their operating environment. FPGA-based hardware accelerators can be used to design embedded systems that are reprogrammable and reconfigurable. A new algorithm was proposed to implement a dynamic, adaptive inference mechanism. A hardware accelerator was developed for this fuzzy automaton model. A Zynq-7000 FPGA platform was used for the hardware implementation. An application example was given in the context of eye-hand coordination problems with handicapped children. Simulations results were presented to verify the hardware implementation.
