This Letter presents the first measurements of the groomed jet radius R_g and the jet girth g in events with an isolated photon recoiling against a jet in lead-lead (PbPb) and proton-proton (pp) collisions at the LHC at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The observables R_g and g provide a quantitative measure of how narrow or broad a jet is. The analysis uses PbPb and pp data samples with integrated luminosities of 1.7 nb⁻¹ and 301 pb⁻¹, respectively, collected with the CMS experiment in 2018 and 2017. Events are required to have a photon with transverse momentum p_T^γ>100 GeV and at least one jet back-to-back in azimuth with respect to the photon and with transverse momentum p_T^jet such that p_T^jet/p_T^γ>0.4. The measured R_g and g distributions are unfolded to the particle level, which facilitates the comparison between the PbPb and pp results and with theoretical predictions. It is found that jets with p_T^jet/p_T^γ>0.8, i.e., those that closely balance the photon p_T^γ, are narrower in PbPb than in pp collisions. Relaxing the selection to include jets with p_T^jet/p_T^γ>0.4 reduces the narrowing of the angular structure of jets in PbPb relative to the pp reference. This shows that selection bias effects associated with jet energy loss play an important role in the interpretation of jet substructure measurements. © 2024 CERN for the benefit of the CMS Collaboration

Communication towers are spread all over the countries and are normally placed in open fields what makes them susceptible to lightning strikes. Therefore, using those structures to study lightning effect is a natural solution. However, installing measuring systems on every tower is a task that requires huge investment due to the costs of such systems. In this paper, a non-expensive system, with an estimated cost of less than one thousand dollars, for measuring lightning impulse current peaks that can be installed on high telecommunication towers is presented. The system is composed of a self-integrating Rogowski coil, coaxial cables and a mini digital oscilloscope allocated at the base of the tower. The coil is fixed on a platform at the tower's end, next to the lightning-rod discharge protection system, and it is connected to the mini oscilloscope through a coaxial cable. Once lightning strikes the tower, a voltage proportional to the lightning current is produced on the self-integrated coil and transferred to the oscilloscope. Thus, using calibration patterns, the current peak can be determined.

Worldwide, over 250 million people are affected by chronic lung conditions such as Asthma and COPD. These can cause breathlessness, a harsh decrease in quality of life and, if not detected and duly managed, even death. In this paper, we aim to find the best and most efficient combination of signal processing and machine learning approaches to produce a smartphone application that could accurately classify lung function, using microphone recordings as the only input. A total of 61 patients performed the forced expiration maneuver providing a dataset of 101 recordings. The signal processing comparison experiments were conducted in a backward selection approach, reducing from 54 to 12 final envelopes, per recording. The classification experiments focused first on differentiating Normal from Abnormal lung function, and second in multiple lung function patterns. The results from this project encourage further development of the system.

The continuous growing of the percentage of elderly people in total population the last decades has given significant boost to ehealth technology and applications that allow for the remote health monitoring of aging people, thus acting as a remedy to the explosive costs that would be otherwise needed for full medical coverage. In this context, we present in this paper an efficient ehealth platform based on a low-cost medical sensor controller system, the main features of which have been successfully enhanced in terms of flexibility, accuracy and power consumption so as to be able to provide wide coverage of tests/medical scenarios with the best possible reliability and low power consumption. A low-cost sensor controller capable of performing both simple and more advanced tests with increased accuracy forms the core of the system communicating with a Gateway installed in the patient's residence and a tablet or smart phone used for giving instructions to the patient by the medical supervisors. Appropriate processing and filtering algorithms are applied where necessary to enhance the accuracy of sensor measurements achieving substantial improvements close to the level of high-cost commercial ones. Furthermore, a combination of hardware and software techniques are employed which exploit at the best possible extent the idle intervals between measurements resulting in considerably lower power requirements and extension of the platform's portability.

Cognitive aging in healthy adults exhibits significant and heterogeneous variability. In this study, we apply a robust unified learning framework to cluster subgroups using neuroimaging data (brain volume and white matter), to identify neurological phenotypes that can sort out the heterogeneity in cognitive aging and help identify potential risk factors for suboptimal brain aging. Using machine learning analytics, results revealed two unique subgroups in healthy older adults with different patterns of white matter integrity and brain volumetric measures. The classification of phenotypical subgroups in healthy older adults may inform the understanding of the complexity of brain changes before the onset of clinical symptoms. The identified neuroimaging features that defined group classification are recognized as important structures that subserve cognitive performance. Further analysis of these potential biomarkers that help predict trajectory of cognitive decline in symptom free individuals could lead to the detection of early stages of neurodegenerative diseases.

We propose a recursive algorithm for estimating time-varying signals from a few linear measurements. The signals are assumed sparse, with unknown support, and are described by a dynamical model. In each iteration, the algorithm solves an 1-1minimization problem and estimates the number of measurements that it has to take at the next iteration. These estimates are computed based on recent theoretical results for 1-1minimization. We also provide sufficient conditions for perfect signal reconstruction at each time instant as a function of an algorithm parameter. The algorithm exhibits high performance in compressive tracking on a real video sequence, as shown in our experimental results. © 2015 IEEE.

In this work an alternative method for producing piezoelectrets with open-tubular channels is presented. The method consists of compressing two heated stamped metal plates over a water-filled pad prefabricated with fluoroethylenepropylene (FEP) films. During hot compression the heated water increases the pad internal pressure, helping to mold the FEP film over the metal stamped pattern. A corrugated pattern was used to create piezoelectrets with open-tubular channels similar to those previously reported in the literature, however, in this process instead of discarding a polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) template water vapor is released. Some previous results obtained with these piezoelectrets regarding temporal stability, charging conditions and measurements performed under different pressures are also presented. © 2015 IEEE.

In this paper an efficient e-health platform based on a low-cost sensor controller system is presented, exhibiting enhanced key characteristics able to provide broad coverage of medical scenarios in a reliable and flexible way. The heart of the system is a low-cost sensor controller capable of performing both simple medical tests and more advanced ones communicating with a Gateway and a tablet or smart phone providing instructions to the patient. Equipped with a simple and flexible communication protocol for data and command exchange, the developed platform is capable of readily supporting a variety of sensors with different sampling profiles. Furthermore, first promising results of on-going work pave the way for achieving considerable enhancement of sensors' accuracy (close to high-cost commercial ones) and significant extension of platform's portability through power consumption minimization. These characteristics have been verified by experimenting with various medical scenarios one of which is demonstrated here in detail. Copyright © 2015 for this paper by authors.

Due to the increasing dependence on network services of our society, research has recently been concentrating on enhancing traditional protection strategies to withstand large-scale failures, as in case of disaster events. The recently-formed EU-funded RECODIS project aims at coordinating and fostering research collaboration in Europe on disaster resiliency in communication networks. In particular, the Working Group (WG) 2 of the RECODIS project focuses on developing new network-resiliency strategies to survive weather-based disruptions. As a first step, WG2 members have conducted a comprehensive literature survey on existing studies on this topic. This paper classifies and summarizes the most relevant studies collected by WG2 members in this first phase of the project. While the majority of studies regarding weather-based disruptions deals with wireless network (as wireless channel is directly affected by weather conditions), in this survey we cover also disaster-resiliency approaches designed for wired network if they leverage network reconfiguration based on disaster 'alerts', considering that many weather-based disruptions grant an 'alert' thanks to weather forecast. © 2016 IEEE.

Population protocols (PPs) are a model of passive distributed systems in which a collection of finite-state mobile agents interact with each other to accomplish a common task. Unlike other works, which investigate their computation power, this paper throws light on an aspect of PPs as a model of chemical reactions. Motivated by the wellknown BZ reaction that provides an autonomous chemical oscillator, we address the problem of autonomously generating an oscillatory execution from any initial configuration (i.e., in a self-stabilizing manner). For deterministic PPs, we show that the self-stabilizing leader election (SSLE) and the self-stabilizing oscillator problem (SS-OSC) are equivalent, in the sense that an SS-OSC protocol is constructible from a given SS-LE protocol and vice versa, which unfortunately implies that (1) resorting to a leader is inevitable (although we seek a decentralized solution) and (2) n states are necessary to create an oscillation of amplitude n, where n is the number of agents (although we seek a memory-efficient solution). Aiming at reducing the space complexity, we present and analyze some randomized oscillatory PPs. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.
