The heterogeneous cloud radio access network (H-CRAN) has been emerging as a cost-effective solution supporting huge volumes of mobile traffic in the big data era. This paper investigates potential security challenges on H-CRAN and analyzes their likelihoods and difficulty levels. Typically, the security threats in H-CRAN can be categorized into three groups, i.e., security threats towards remote radio heads (RRHs), those towards the radio cloud infrastructure and towards backhaul networks. To overcome challenges made by the security threats, we propose a hierarchical security framework called Secure H-CRAN (SH-CRAN) to protect the H-CRAN system against the potential threats. Specifically, the architecture of SH-CRAN contains three logically independent secure domains (SDs), which are the SDs of radio cloud infrastructure, RRHs and backhauls. The notable merits of SH-CRAN include two aspects: (i) the proposed framework is able to provide security assurance for the evolving H-CRAN system, and (ii) the impacts of any failure are limited in one specific component of H-CRAN. The proposed SH-CRAN can be regarded as the basis of the future security mechanisms of mobile bag data computing. Copyright © 2015 ACM.

This study interviewed 33 students from four different institutions in a variety of engineering and computer science majors in order to understand how and why students study the way they do. The institutions involved in this research include two types of Carnegie 2010 Classifications (Master's L and RU-VH), geographical locations in the northwest, northeast, and midwest, both public and private institutions, and enrollments varying from 3,500 to 29,000 students (total undergraduates among all majors). Although this interview pool does not provide a large sample size, and thus results must be interpreted qualitatively and with caution, we found that a majority of students begin their studying alone and seek help only later when they run into trouble with their coursework. Despite the fact that this Start alone, End together model for studying was the predominant approach among interviewees, the reasons for choosing this mode of studying vary. For example, students at the small Women's college in this study reported easy accessibility to faculty as a reason to refrain from studying in groups, while students at the large research university reported a need to focus properly, learn fully, and make the most efficient use of limited time as the prevalent reason for beginning their study alone. Furthermore, when asked how they prefer to study, many students shift from a Start alone, End together model to a Start alone, End alone model, suggesting that students may have unrealistic expectations of being able to complete assignments and study on their own. Still other students, while making the best of Start alone, End together, expressed that they would much rather work in a group from start to finish. The recent availability of dynamic 3D facial scans has spawned research activity in recognition based on such data. However, the problem offacial expression retrieval based on dynamic 3D facial data has hardly been addressed and is the subject of this paper. A novel descriptor is created, capturing the spatio-temporal deformation of the 3D facial mesh sequence. Experiments have been implemented using the standard BU - 4DFE dataset. The obtained retrieval results exceed the state-of-the-art results and the new descriptor is much more frugal in terms of space requirements. Furthermore, a methodology which exploits the retrieval results, in order to achieve unsupervised dynamic 3D facial expression recognition is presented, in order to directly compare the proposed descriptor against the wealth of works in recognition. The aforementioned unsupervised methodology outperforms the supervised dynamic 3D facial expression recognition state-of-the-art techniques in terms of classification accuracy. © The Eurographics Association 2015.

European integration has resulted in a fast increasing number of legal procedures containing cross-border effects which require better cooperation between the national judicial systems and more efficient and faster procedures for the users. ICT technologies can help make cross-border judicial procedures more transparent, efficient and economic, both in civil and criminal matters. e-CODEX is an important project of the EU in the domain of e-Justice that aims to provide to citizens, enterprises and legal professionals an easier access to justice in cross border procedures, as well as make cross-border collaboration of courts and authorities easier and more efficient. It develops the required infrastructure and the organizational, procedural and legal environment necessary and also conducts a number of real life cross-border pilots. One of the first such pilots to become operational is that of the European Payment Order (EPO), in which Greece also participates. In this paper we briefly present the services of cross-border access of citizens and legal professionals to legal means in Europe provided by e-CODEX and also the Greek e-CODEX pilot of European Payment Order, which has already launched operation in the framework of this major e-Justice project. © Proceedings of the 12th European, Mediterranean and Middle Eastern Conference on Information Systems, EMCIS 2015. Population distribution pattern is directly related with economic gap of a region. Analysis of population distribution pattern is usually performed by studying statistical data on population. This study aimed to analyze population distribution pattern using image analysis concept, i.e. using satellite images. Levelset and morphological image filtering methods were used to analyze images to see distribution pattern. The research result showed that Levelset and morphological image filtering could remove a lot of noises in analysis result images and form object edge contours very clearly. The detected object contours were used as references to recognize population distribution pattern based on satellite image analysis. The pattern made based on the research result didn't show optimal result because Levelset performed image segmentation based on the contours of the analyzed objects. Other segmentation methods should be combined with it to produce clearer population distribution pattern.

The objective of this research is to evaluate the performance of a system of systems optimization algorithm, namely, L4G-PCAO, in building energy systems. Since the test bed of this research is an office building with more than two hundred occupiers, the heating and cooling demands of the building must always be fully satisfied. Consequently, changes in the currently-installed control system cannot be made forthrightly. Therefore, fresh ideas like implementation of new control strategies or optimization algorithms should be firstly put to the test via dynamic simulation, which makes engineers capable of examining new control and optimization strategies. The performance should then be analyzed and evaluated before implementing in the use case. This paper presents a strategy for simulation-based implementation of L4G-PCAO in a building energy system and also evaluates its performance. The results show that it is not only possible to conserve energy by applying this newly-developed optimization algorithm to existing control systems, but also it can shift the usage of energy sources in a more environment-friendly direction.

Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is diagnosed by analysis of the morphological and rhythmic properties of the electrocardiogram. It was recently shown that accurate detection of AFib is possible using beat-to-beat interval variations. This raises the question of whether AFib detection can be performed using a pulsatile waveform such as the Photoplethysmogram (PPG). The recent explosion in use of recreational and professional ambulatory wrist-based pulse monitoring devices means that an accurate pulse-based AFib screening algorithm would enable large scale screening for silent or undiagnosed AFib, a significant risk factor for multiple diseases. We propose a noise-resistant machine learning approach to detecting AFib from noisy ambulatory PPG recorded from the wrist using a modern research watch-based wearable device (the Samsung Simband). Ambulatory pulsatile and movement data were recorded from 46 subjects, 15 with AFib and 31 non symptomatic. Single channel electrocardiogram (ECG), multi-wavelength PPG and tri-axial accelerometry were recorded simultaneously at 128 Hz from the non-dominant wrist using the Simband. Recording lengths varied from 3.5 to 8.5 minutes. Pulse (beat) detection was performed on the PPG waveforms, and eleven features were extracted based on beat-to-beat variability and waveform signal quality. Using 10-fold cross validation, an accuracy of 95 % on out-of-sample data was achieved, with a sensitivity of 97%, specificity of 94%, and an area under the receiver operating curve (AUROC) of 0.99. The described approach provides a noise-resistant, accurate screening tool for AFib from PPG sensors located in an ambulatory wrist watch. To our knowledge this is the first study to demonstrate an algorithm with a high enough accuracy to be used in general population studies that does not require an ambulatory Holter electrocardiographic monitor.

In this paper, a methodology towards a hardware/software implementation of an Elliptic Curve Diffie Hellman (ECDH) scheme is proposed in an effort to overcome the design problems of Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) systems stemming from the highly constrained embedded system hardware and software environment (restricted RAM, storage and processing power). To achieve that, instead of the excessively slow software ECDH implementations or monolithic, not flexible hardware implementations, we propose the use of a flexible, scalar multiplication (SM) accelerator connected to the main embedded system processor in order to speed up ECDH functionality without downgrading the overall main processor performance. The proposed solution can be used for a wide variety of GF(2k) based Elliptic Curves (EC) and is capable of shifting from one EC to another EC at runtime (flexibility). The proposed architecture was implemented and tested in Xilinx Virtex 5 technology by realizing the proposed SM accelerator unit interconnected with a Xilinx microblaze softcore processor. © 2015 IEEE.

Users and their passwords are the weakest link of security, because they tend to create passwords that are not strong, easy to remember and contain words that are familiar to them. Users' lack of security consciousness and their behavior can be influenced by security education. Our research explores the effect of password security training on the strength of the passwords chosen by the users. The objective of this paper is to explore possible differences in the quality of passwords between students from different faculties with different foreknowledge and education about passwords and security. In this paper we analyze the passwords of the students from the Faculty of Tourism and compare the results to the ones from the Faculty of electrical engineering and computer science at the University of Maribor. We collected the data by means of an online questionnaire, performed among undergraduate and graduate students. Despite our efforts to educate the users about the importance of frequent password change, a large percent of users did not change their passwords following the lectures. The overall conclusion of this preliminary study is that users still lack security knowledge regarding password change and need to be further educated in this direction.

Mobile computing is one of the most important paradigms to inuence and enhance modern e-services, mainly due to its anytime and anywhere availability adding value to the delivered service. In a traditional e-government context, the service life cycle takes the form of citizens consuming services provided by public sector bodies. In this paper, we use a novel concept combining mobile e-services and open data to extend and allow possible citizen-driven continuation of the service life cycle. The concept is evaluated throughout the design process, and also becomes the subject of a focus group. Our most important conclusions are that the concept design extends the service life cycle within the public sector context, and also creates new entrances for citizens to participate in generating and acquiring open data, thus transforming citizens' involvement. The result is increased co-operation, as well as increased adoption and availability of data and e-services, enhancing citizen participation. © 2015 ACM.
