Diffusion processes in networks can be used to model many real-world processes. Analysis of diffusion traces can help us answer important questions such as the source of diffusion and the role of each node in the diffusion process. However, in large-scale networks, it is very expensive if not impossible to monitor the entire network to collect the complete diffusion trace. This paper considers diffusion history reconstruction from a partial observation and develops a greedy, step-by-step reconstruction algorithm. It is proved that the algorithm always produces a diffusion history that is consistent with the partial observation. Our experimental results based on real networks and real diffusion data show that the algorithm significantly outperforms some existing methods.

In this study, we provide mathematical and practice-driven justification for using [0, 1] normalization of inconsistency indicators in pairwise comparisons. Cultural diversity helps to make our world rich and vital. The world's population of indigenous people now numbers some 350 million individuals representing nearly 6000 languages and cultures. However, if nothing is done, half of those languages spoken today will disappear by the end of this century. The Fifth International Workshop on Spoken Language Technologies for Under-Resourced Languages (SLTU 2016) was organized to provide a forum for researchers and industrial counterparts to share achievements and challenges in all areas related to natural language processing and spoken language processing of under-resourced languages, including: linguistic studies of under-resourced languages, resources acquisition of text and speech corpora, zero resource speech technologies, cross-lingual/multi-lingual acoustic and lexical modeling, speech recognition and synthesis for under-resourced languages, machine translation and natural language processing for under-resourced languages, and applications of spoken language technologies for under-resourced languages. SLTU 2016 is the fifth in a series of even-year SLTU Workshops. Four previous Workshops were organized: SLTU’14 in St. Petersburg (Russia), SLTU’12 in Cape Town (South Africa), SLTU’10 in Penang (Malaysia), and SLTU’08 in Hanoi (Vietnam). SLTU 2016, which is adopted as ISCA ITRW, will be held on May 9-12, 2016, in Yogyakarta (Indonesia), a centre of classical Javanese culture. There are more than 700 ethnic languages spoken in Indonesian archipelago, but 146 are endangered. Therefore, SLTU 2016 has special focus on under-resourced languages and endangered languages. SLTU 2016 continues the tradition of previous SLTUs that feature a number of distinguished keynote speaker, and this year, for the first time, SLTU will also offer Interactive Tutorial on ASR-Kaldi and TTS-Festival on Under-Resourced Language. In this work, a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA)-based embedded software platform coupled with a software-based plant, forming a Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL), is used to validate a systematic sensor selection framework. The systematic sensor selection framework combines multi-objective optimization, Linear-Quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control, and the nonlinear model of a maglev suspension. The physical process that represents the suspension plant is realized in a high-level system modeling environment, while the LQG controller is implemented on an FPGA. FPGAs allow to rapidly evaluate algorithms and test designs under real-world scenarios avoiding heavy time penalty associated with Hardware Description Language (HDL) simulators. Moreover, the HIL technique implemented shows a significant speed-up in the required execution time when compared to the software-based model.

Disaster-based failures can seriously disrupt any communication network, making its services unavailable. Such disruptions may be caused by natural disasters, technology-related failures, or malicious attacks, and they are observably increasing in number, intensity and scale. When network services that are a part of critical infrastructure become unavailable, commercial and/or societal problems are inevitable. The issue of limiting the impact of disaster-based failures needs to be urgently addressed due to the lack of suitable mechanisms deployed in the current networks. The COST CA15127 (RECODIS) Action will fill this gap by developing appropriate solutions to provide cost-efficient resilient communications in the presence of disaster-based disruptions considering both existing and emerging communication network architectures. It will be driven by researchers from academia and industry in strong cooperation with governmental bodies. In this paper, we highlight the objectives of RECODIS, its structure, as well as planned outcomes.

Environmental monitoring systems often operate in remote locations and thus must be designed for energy-efficiency and reliability. As the main tasks of such systems are sensing, logging and delivering environmental measurements, the frequency with which are these operations executed significantly affects the overall energy consumption of the monitoring devices. This work presents the results of statistical analysis of environmental measurements (air temperature, air humidity, soil moisture and photosynthetically active radiation), and evaluates how the frequency of their collection affects the accuracy of collected samples. In particular, two independent approaches are discussed. The first approach is based on the concept of stationarity for evaluating time series models, while the second seeks to determine the probability density function through the combination of descriptive statistics with ANOVA parametric analysis. The results of these analyses show that different environmental variables should be sampled with different frequencies. Implementation of this principle will decrease energy requirements of the environmental monitoring devices, and allow their energy-efficient design and long-term uninterrupted operation under demanding field conditions.

In this paper we extend STHoles, a very successful algorithm that uses query results to build and maintain multi-dimensional histograms of numerical data. Our contribution is the formal definition of extensions of all relevant concepts;such that they are independent of the domain of the data, but subsume STHoles concepts as their numerical specialization. At the same time, we also derive specializations for the string domain and implement these into a prototype that we use to empirically validate our approach. Our current implementation uses string prefixes as the machinery for describing string ranges. Although weaker than regular expressions, prefixes can be very efficiently applied and can capture interesting ranges in hierarchically structured string domains, such as those of filesystem pathnames and URIs. In fact, we base the empirical validation of the approach on existing, publicly available Semantic Web data where we demonstrate convergence to accurate and efficient histograms. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

In this paper a model-based event-triggered control scheme for freeway traffic systems is proposed. The freeway network is a spatially distributed system in which sensors and actuators act on portions of the overall system. Measurements and control actions can be transmitted among the plant and the controllers via a shared communication network. For this reason the freeway network can be controlled relying on a design framework typical of Networked Control Systems. In the proposed control scheme the number of transmissions over the network is reduced by adopting local triggering conditions included in sensors, allowing transmissions from the sensors to the controller only when such conditions are verified. One of the novelties of this work stands in considering not only sensors able to measure the freeway traffic state but also sensors which measure the traffic demands, which can be regarded as disturbances affecting the system dynamics.

Misdiagnosis of epilepsy, even by experienced clinicians, can cause exposure of patients to medical procedures and treatments with potential complications. Moreover, diagnostic delays (for 7 to 10 years on average) impose economic burden at individual and population levels. In this paper, a seizure classification framework of epileptic and non-epileptic events from multi-channel EEG data is proposed. In contrast to relevant studies found in the literature, in this study, the non-epileptic class consists of two types of paroxysmal episodes of loss of consciousness, namely the psychogenic non-epileptic seizure (PNES) and the vasovagal syncope (VVS). EEG signals are represented in the spectral-spatial-temporal domain. A tensor-based approach is employed to extract signature features to feed the classification models. TUCKER decomposition is applied to learn the essence of original, high-dimensional domain of feature space and extract a multilinear discriminative subspace. The classification models were evaluated on EEG epochs from 11 subjects in an inter-subject cross-validation setting and achieved an accuracy of 96%. © 2015 IEEE.

Control Access Point of Devices for Delay Reduction in WBAN Systems with CSMA/CA

Due to the gathering of sickrooms and consultation rooms in almost all hospitals, the performance of wireless devices system is deteriorated by the increase of collision probability and waiting time. In order to improve the performance of wireless devices system, relay is added to control the access point and then the access of devices is distributed. The concentration of access point is avoided and then the performance of system is expected to be improved. The discrete time Markov chain (DTMC) is proposed to calculate the access probability of devices in a duration time slot. The collision probability, throughput, delay, bandwidth and so on are theoretically calculated based on the standard IEEE802.15.6 and the performance of the system with and without relay is compared. The numerical result indicates that the performance of the system with control access point is higher than that of the system without control access point when the number of devices and/or packet arrive rate are high. However, the system with control access point is more complicated. It is the trade-off between the performance and the complication.
