Background: Experimental and epidemiological studies indicate an association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) air pollution and increased risk of type 2 diabetes. In view of the high and increasing prevalence of diabetes, we aimed to quantify the burden of type 2 diabetes attributable to PM_2·5 originating from ambient and household air pollution. Methods: We systematically compiled all relevant cohort and case-control studies assessing the effect of exposure to household and ambient fine particulate matter (PM_2·5) air pollution on type 2 diabetes incidence and mortality. We derived an exposure–response curve from the extracted relative risk estimates using the MR-BRT (meta-regression—Bayesian, regularised, trimmed) tool. The estimated curve was linked to ambient and household PM_2·5 exposures from the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study 2019, and estimates of the attributable burden (population attributable fractions and rates per 100 000 population of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years) for 204 countries from 1990 to 2019 were calculated. We also assessed the role of changes in exposure, population size, age, and type 2 diabetes incidence in the observed trend in PM_2·5-attributable type 2 diabetes burden. All estimates are presented with 95% uncertainty intervals. Findings: In 2019, approximately a fifth of the global burden of type 2 diabetes was attributable to PM_2·5 exposure, with an estimated 3·78 (95% uncertainty interval 2·68–4·83) deaths per 100 000 population and 167 (117–223) disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) per 100 000 population. Approximately 13·4% (9·49–17·5) of deaths and 13·6% (9·73–17·9) of DALYs due to type 2 diabetes were contributed by ambient PM2·5, and 6·50% (4·22–9·53) of deaths and 5·92% (3·81–8·64) of DALYs by household air pollution. Application of gap-constraints given sequential frequent pattern mining for protein function prediction

Objectives: Predicting protein function from the protein-protein interaction network is challenging due to its complexity and huge scale of protein interaction process along with inconsistent pattern. Previously proposed methods such as neighbor counting, network analysis, and graph pattern mining has predicted functions by calculating the rules and probability of patterns inside network. Although these methods have shown good prediction, difficulty still exists in searching several functions that are exceptional from simple rules and patterns as a result of not considering the inconsistent aspect of the interaction network. Methods: In this article, we propose a novel approach using the sequential pattern mining method with gap-constraints. To overcome the inconsistency problem, we suggest frequent functional patterns to include every possible functional sequence-including patterns for which search is limited by the structure of connection or level of neighborhood layer. We also constructed a tree-graph with the most crucial interaction information of the target protein, and generated candidate sets to assign by sequential pattern mining allowing gaps. Results: The parameters of pattern length, maximum gaps, and minimum support were given to find the best setting for the most accurate prediction. The highest accuracy rate was 0.972, which showed better results than the simple neighbor counting approach and link-based approach. Conclusion: The results comparison with other approaches has confirmed that the proposed approach could reach more function candidates that previous methods could not obtain. © 2015 Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An efficient query solution for large RDF graphs

As one of the core technologies of the Semantic Web, the RDF data model enables us to represent machinereadable metadata about Web resources. SPARQL is the standard query language for answering queries from RDF data. In order to support SPARQL in practice, it is important to access such metadata quickly from large scale RDF data stores, such as Gene Ontology and DBpedia. In this paper, we present an algorithm that decides the solve order of an inputed query. We formalize the search space reduction of the connected variables occurring in a query and establish the costs of different query patterns. In particular, we consider selecting one of the various orders of elements in each query that results in less computation for searching and reasoning steps, i.e., matching a subgraph of a complex RDF graph. Using the algorithm, we implement an efficient query system with a RDF store (called NodeStore) for large-scale RDF data. In the RDF store, an indexed data structure of RDF graphs is well constructed for optimizing RDF data processing, e.g., finding a set of RDF triples including a common resource. For the evaluation of deciding the solve order of a query, we show some experimental results for our query system NodeStore and the Jena framework using a LUBM dataset (a benchmarking framework for semantic repositories).

Image saliency detection using region contrast is often based on the premise that salient region has a contrast with the background which becomes a limiting factor if the color of the salient object background is similar. To overcome this problem associated with single image analysis, we propose to collect background regions from a collection of images where generative property of, say, natural images ensures that all the images are spun out of it hence negating any bias. Background regions are differentiated based on their geometric context where we use the ground and sky context as background. Finally, the aggregated map is generated using color contrast between the superpixels segments of the image and collection of background superpixels. Visual Saliency of a video sequence can be computed by combining spatial and temporal features that attract a user's attention to a group of pixels. We present a method that computes video saliency by integrating these features: color dissimilarity, objectness measure, motion difference, and boundary score. We use temporal clusters of pixels, or temporal superpixels, to simulate attention associated with a group of moving pixels in a video sequence. The features are combined using weights learned by a linear support vector machine in an online fashion. The temporal linkage for superpixels is then used to find the saliency flow across the image frames. We experimentally demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method and that the method has better performance when compared to state-of-the-art methods.

In this work an alternative method for producing piezoelectrets with open-tubular channels is presented. The method consists of compressing two heated stamped metal plates over a water-filled pad prefabricated with fluoroethylenepropylene (FEP) films. During hot compression the heated water increases the pad internal pressure, helping to mold the FEP film over the metal stamped pattern. A corrugated pattern was used to create piezoelectrets with open-tubular channels similar to those previously reported in the literature, however, in this process instead of discarding a polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE) template water vapor is released. Some previous results obtained with these piezoelectrets regarding temporal stability, charging conditions and measurements performed under different pressures are also presented.

Profile Generation Methods for Reinforcing Robustness of Keystroke Authentication in Free Text Typing

We have investigated several characteristics of the keystroke authentication in Japanese free text typing, and our methods have provided high recognition accuracy for high typing skill users who can type 700 or more letters per 5 minutes. There are, however, some situations decreasing the accuracy such as long period passage after registering each user’s profile documents and existence of lower typing skill users who can type only about 500 - 600 letters per 5 minutes. In this paper, we propose new profile generation methods, profile-updating and profile-combining methods, to reinforce the robustness of keystroke authentication and show the effectiveness of them through three examinations with experimental data.

Keyboard Dependency of Personal Identification Performance by Keystroke Dynamics in Free Text Typing

We have proposed some methods for feature extraction and identification that enable identification of individuals through long-text input as an important topic in keystroke dynamics research. As to the robustness in practical circumstances, there exists a question on the keystroke dynamics how much the recognition accuracy is influenced by the change of keyboard. By comparing the performance in the cases of using the same keyboard and different keyboards, the dependencies on keyboards are evaluated through three implemented experiments for subjects. As a result, it is found that we do not need to worry about the keyboard difference for users whose typing skills reach high level with about 900 or more letters in 5 minutes, and only for the remaining users it would be necessary to register their profile data with respect to each keyboard they use in order to avoid recognition accuracy degradation.

The precise and quick association of targets is one of the main challenging tasks in the signal processing field of the Multistatic Radar System (MRS). The paper deals with target association techniques based on the computation of the Probability Hypothetic Density (PHD) Function. The Computation time makes solving the PHD a very demanding task. The speedup of a newly developed algorithm depends on vectorization and parallel processing techniques. This paper describes the comparison between the original and parallel version of the target association algorithm with the full set of input data (without any knowledge about the approximation of targets direction) and the comparison with the advanced target association algorithm using additional input information about the direction of the target. All algorithms are processed in the MATLAB environment and Microsoft Visual Studio - C. The comparison also includes Central Processor Unit (CPU) and Graphics Processor Unit (GPU) version of all algorithms.
