Since April 2014 the Artemis/ECSEL project EMC 2 is running and provides significant results. EMC 2 stands for "Embedded Multi-Core Systems for Mixed Criticality Applications in Dynamic and Changeable Real-Time Environments". In this paper we report recent progress on technical work in the different workpackages and use cases. We highlight progress in the research on system architecture, design methodology, platform and operating systems, and in qualification and certification. Application cases in the fields of automotive, avionics, health care, and industry are presented exploiting the technical results achieved.

Social robot acts based on any perceived information to interact and communicate with humans or other robots. One essential type of information is visual-based information captured by camera. Visual data from camera is processed to extract essential information through different perspectives such as gesture detection, facial recognition, sign and object detection, and text understanding. As an intelligent agent, the social robot should be able to determine and perform socially rational action autonomously based on the processed information. In this paper, a general framework of visual-based information process to produce rational action is presented. The proposed architecture is implemented on a platform of humanoid robot as a test subject.

We propose a sticky transfer framework to enhance successful message transfers in a Delay- and Disruption-Tolerant Network (DTN). We propose a sticky transfer protocol within the framework that enables mobiles nodes to "stick" to each other for a longer period of time in order to complete the transmissions of the messages needed to be sent. A mobile node A makes the decision of whether to stick to another node B or not by exchanging information with its neighbors and negotiating an agreement to stick to B in order to prolong the contact duration for transferring messages. Sticky transfers improve the number of successfully forwarded messages by allowing more messages to be transferred during the contact duration and by minimizing the number of message transfer aborts. We evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed sticky transfer framework through simulations, which show that the average message delivery ratio increased by as much as 38%, while the average end-to-end delay decreased by as much as 36% when using sticky transfers.

Goal of this paper is to present some experimental results obtained in the process of modeling and implementation of a smart sensors network, system that can be integrated in an emergency communication network. The presented configuration of this system, allows a multiple possibilities for data transmission and analogue (voice) communication. Intelligent embedded systems are considered as one of the most important technologies of the 21st century. Over the past decades there have been several programs aimed to develop and implement micro wireless networks: Distributed Sensor Networks (DSN), Sensor Information Technology (Sense) [1,2]. Developing technologies for sensor networks has led to the emergence of various fields of application such as environmental monitoring, traffic control or safety of persons and property. During their development occurred in numbers and complexity inherent technical problems related to the security of these networks, their identification, control and data flow in the network.

A variety of real-world problems are characterized by multimodal functions, i.e., they demand the identification of several locally or globally optimal solutions. In the field of multimodal optimization, researchers actively address the development of niching techniques by inventing new methods and also by coupling existing methods with global optimization metaheuristics. In this paper, we put forward a general niching framework for the Variable Mesh Optimization (VMO) metaheuristic algorithm, coined as Variable Mesh Optimization with Niching (VMO-N). We argue that the basic VMO formulation can be easily adapted to multimodal optimization scenarios without extra adjustments. We refer to the recently published Niche-Clearing-based Variable Mesh Optimization (NC-VMO), as an instantiation of the VMO-N framework proposed here. Since the niche clearing procedure in NC-VMO requires a priori knowledge of the fitness landscape, we also introduce the Niche-based VMO via Adaptive Species Discovery (VMO-ASD) as another instance of VMO-N, in order to show its applicability to a wider range of multimodal problems. VMOASD results with some of the benchmark functions for the CEC'2013 Special Session and Competition on Niching Methods for Multimodal Function Optimization confirm that VMO-N is a plausible general VMO niching framework for multimodal problems. We demonstrate the advantages of VMO-N over the canonical version of the algorithm, VMO-ASD over NC-VMO and also report on VMO-N's performance against other state-of-the-art niching algorithms. Further pursuits of strongly competitive versions of VMO-N will demand the use of more suitable niching methods than both clearing and ASD within the framework although this is not the focal point of this study.

In this paper, we propose a resource block allocation scheme for LTE systems (Long Term Evolution) in order to attain QoS requirements based on the effective bandwidth theory. To this end, first we propose an adaptive algorithm to estimate the Multifractal Wavelet Model (MWM) parameters in order to calculate the effective bandwidth for the incoming traffic flows into the system. Next, we apply a PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm in order to decide the number of resource blocks to be allocated to each user, providing a minimum rate per user. We validate the efficiency of the proposed adaptive allocation scheme via simulations with real traffic traces.

This paper suggests the application of adaptive Charged System Search (CSS) algorithms to the optimal path planning (PP) of multiple mobile robots. An off-line adaptive CSS-based PP approach is proposed and applied to holonomic wheeled platforms in static environments. The adaptive CSS algorithms solve the optimisation problems that aim the minimisation of objective functions (o.f.s) specific to PP and expressed as the weighted sum of four functions that target separate PP objectives. A penalty term is added in certain situations in the first step of the PP approach. The specific features of the adaptive CSS algorithms are the adaptation of the acceleration, velocity, and separation distance parameters to the iteration index, and the substitution of the worst charged particles' fitness function values and positions with the best performing particle data. The fitness function in the adaptive CSS algorithms corresponds to the o.f., and the search space and agents (charged particles) in the adaptive CSS algorithms correspond to the solution space and to the mobile robots, respectively. A case study and experiments are included validate the new adaptive CSS-based PP approach and to compare it with nonadaptive CSS-, Particle Swarm Optimization-and Gravitational Search Algorithm-based PP approaches. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of Automatic Control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Named Data Networking (NDN) is a novel networking approach that aims at overcoming some of the limitations of the current Internet. In particular, NDN aims at providing better privacy and security by focusing on the data items themselves rather than on the location of data. This is achieved by using soft states at the routers, which record the requests/interests for data from users in the Pending Interest Table (PIT). However, this new networking concept opens up avenues for launching Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) attacks on PITs. That is, an attacker may flood the network with a large number of Interest packets that would overflow the PITs at the routers, thus preventing legitimate users from receiving the requested data. This type of DDoS attack is known as the Interest Flooding Attack (IFA) and, if not adequately dealt with, may severely disrupt the normal operation of an NDN system. In this paper, we first show that the basic NDN mechanism is vulnerable to IFA even when the attacker has very limited resources. Next, we propose a mitigation technique that allows routers to quickly identify and block such DDoS attempts, by detecting anomalous user behaviour. We also introduce an additional security layer by using public-key based router authentication. We evaluate our proposed scheme by means of computer simulations and show that a sufficient level of security can be achieved with little processing and storage overhead. Copyright © 2015 IARIA.

This study presents a malware classification system designed to classify malicious processes at run-time on production hosts. The system monitors process-level system call activity and uses information extracted from system call traces as inputs to the classifier. The system is advantageous because it does not require the use of specialized analysis environments. Instead, a `lightweight' service application monitors process execution and classifies new malware samples based on their behavioral similarity to known malware. This study compares the effectiveness of multiple feature sets, ground truth labeling schemes, and machine learning algorithms for malware classification. The accuracy of the classification system is evaluated against processlevel system call traces of recently discovered malware samples collected from production environments. Experimental results indicate that accurate classification results can be achieved using relatively short system call traces and simple representations.

An approach for the solution of multi-domain and multi-physics problems is the application of an interface relaxation (IR) method to treat the solution on the common boundaries between domains of the original problem. This solution process is more efficient than other techniques, but still remains quite computationally intensive and the inherently parallel solution of the underlying problems does not scale to the overall method. This paper presents an asynchronous parallel algorithm of a specific IR method, named GEO. The performance results in terms of convergence speed and execution time demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm towards the solution of large-scale multi-domain and multi-physics problems.
