This paper proposes the optimal tuning of the parameters of PI and PID controllers for an automotive application by Backtracking Search Optimization Algorithms (BSOAs). The automotive application is related to the position control of pancake DC torque motor systems. The effects of the population size, which is an important parameter of BSOAs, on the performance of both the BSOAs and the position control system are discussed using simulation results.

Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) have been met with great success in planning domains where agents must balance actions that provide knowledge and actions that provide reward. Recently, nonparametric Bayesian methods have been successfully applied to POMDPs to obviate the need of a priori knowledge of the size of the state space, allowing to assume that the number of visited states may grow as the agent explores its environment. These approaches rely on the assumption that the agent’s environment remains stationary;however, in real-world scenarios the environment may change over time. In this work, we aim to address this inadequacy by introducing a dynamic nonparametric Bayesian POMDP model that both allows for automatic inference of the (distributional) representations of POMDP states, and for capturing non-stationarity in the modeled environments. Formulation of our method is based on imposition of a suitable dynamic hierarchical Dirichlet process (dHDP) prior over state transitions. We derive efficient algorithms for model inference and action planning and evaluate it on several benchmark tasks. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014.

Cooperative spectrum sensing improves the performance of cognitive radio (CR) networks. In cooperative sensing, there are two important phases, detecting and reporting. In the detecting phase, multiple CR users detect the presence of primary users. In the reporting phase, one or multiple channels are needed for CR users to transmit local detection results to a fusion center (FC). In this paper, a reporting channel design, based on a random access protocol, is introduced for CR users and the fusion center. Analytical and simulation evaluations are performed considering the collision and capture in the reporting channels. In addition, the rule of K out of N is implemented in FC in determining global detection results. Numerical results demonstrate the feasibility of the random access based reporting channel in implementing cooperative spectrum sensing.

We introduce a protocol with a reconfigurable switch circuit system to create non-overlapping single loops in the smart power grid for the realization of the Kirchhoff-Law-Johnson-(like)-Noise secure key distribution system. The protocol is valid for star networks which are in some of the electric distribution networks between the utility and the customer. The star network can also be utilized to control traffic networks. The speed of the protocol (the number of steps needed) versus grid size and the functional characteristics of the star network are explored. When properly generalized, such a system has the potential to achieve unconditionally secure key distribution over the smart power grid and traffic networks of arbitrary geometrical dimensions.

In this paper, we present the design of a printed multiple antenna system that uses a ferrimagnetic compound (YIG) as part of the substrate. We investigate the influence of this material on the mutual coupling between the antenna elements when an external magnetic field is applied. It is proved that the proper application of the magnetic field changes the polarization of the elements from linear to circular and additionally reduces their mutual coupling.

Adipose tissue (AT) is a complex connective tissue with a high relative proportion of adipocytes, which are specialized cells with the ability to store lipids in large droplets. AT is found in multiple discrete depots throughout the body, where it serves as the primary repository for excess calories. In addition, AT has an important role in functions as diverse as insulation, immunity and regulation of metabolic homeostasis. The Human Cell Atlas Adipose Bionetwork was established to support the generation of single-cell atlases of human AT as well as the development of unified approaches and consensus for cell annotation. Here, we provide a first roadmap from this bionetwork, including our suggested cell annotations for humans and mice, with the aim of describing the state of the field and providing guidelines for the production, analysis, interpretation and presentation of AT single-cell data.

Palindromic DNA has many interesting and functional properties, including the ability to form non-canonical DNA structures such as hairpins, cruciforms, and slipped strand structures. Palindromes also serve important roles in binding sites and enzyme activity, and have a strong effect on mutation rates. Palindromes are abundant in most genomes, often occurring within coding sequences, though in many instances it is still not clear how their presence affects genomic functions. The identification and study of palindromic DNA is essential to the progression of our understanding of the genome. To address this need, we present a novel method using an in-memory computing environment for identifying, extracting, and indexing palindromes in a searchable database for all mammals in Ensembl release 80. We discuss the preliminary results of a multi-species study on palindromic DNA, focusing on the size, frequency, and distribution of palindromes. Utilizing a Big Data ecosystem enables us to generate the largest palindrome database to date, comprising 42 genomes. Our study offers new insight into the dynamics of palindromes and facilitates future investigation.

This article proposes to tackle the high chip temperature problem caused by a few thermal hot spots in a processor using a different approach. In addition to using cooling mechanisms, such as metal heat sinks or fans, and dynamic thermal/power management solutions, this work investigates a new, fine-grained spot cooling technique for processors using thermoelectric generators (TEGs) and coolers (TECs) at the processor microarchitecture level. The proposed approach reduces the temperature of hot spots with TECs that are powered by TEG-based processor waste heat harvesting. The approach is sustainable in that it does not require additional power input for spot cooling while being able to lower the total chip temperature. The design takes advantage of two critical observations of processor temperature distribution and reliability. First, the temperature difference between the hot spots and cooler areas is typically tens of degrees on modern processors. Second, the reliability of the entire chip is limited by the highest of the hot spot temperatures. This presents an opportunity such that if we can maintain the same chip reliability by keeping the hot spot temperature constant or lower while allowing the temperature of the cooler chip area to increase to, but not exceed, the hot spot temperature, we would be able to harvest the processor waste heat without degrading reliability. We also show that the harvested electrical energy can be used to lower the temperature of processor hot spots, therefore reducing the overall chip temperature and improving reliability. The temperature evaluation results based on an open source processor temperature simulation tool - HotSpot 5.02 - show that the proposed technique can effectively lower the chip temperature by an average of 7.7℃ across the benchmarks studied in this paper. This temperature reduction corresponds to 29% mean-time-to-failure MTTF_(EM) and 5.7% MTTF_(TDDB) reliability improvements. The proposed approach is a novel, s

The Special issue of AI Magazine brings together extended versions of selected papers from the 2013 Plan, Activity, and Intent Recognition workshops and the Activity Context-Aware Systems workshops to highlight the state of the art in the technologies that enable these new methods of interacting with virtual and cyber physical systems. Oriel Uzan, Reuth Dekel, Or Seri, and Ya'akov Gal's article, Plan Recognition for Exploratory Learning Environments Using Interleaved Temporal Search, presents novel algorithms for inferring users' activities in a class of flexible and open-ended educational software called exploratory learning environments (ELEs) that support interaction styles including exogenous actions and trial and error, providing a rich educational environment for students but challenging teachers to keep track of students' progress and to assess their performance. Christopher W. Geib and Christopher E. Swetenham's article, Parallelizing Plan Recognition, exploits the opportunity provided by modern multicore computing devices to parallelize plan recognition algorithms to decrease run time. Mik Kersten and Gail C. Murphy show in their article, Reducing Friction for Knowledge Workers with Task Context, how this friction can be reduced, and productivity improved, by capturing and modeling the context of a knowledge worker's task based on how the knowledge worker interacts with an information space. Computational management of activities that reflect human intention through activity-based computing (ABC) is described by Jakob E. Bardram, Steven Jeuris, and Steven Houben in their article, Activity-Based Computing: Computational Management of Activities Reflecting Human Intention. In their article, A General Context-Aware Framework for Improved Human System Interactions, Stacy Lovell Pfautz, Gabriel Ganberg, Adam Fouse, and Nathan Schurr describe a general framework for building context-aware interactive intelligent systems.
