Analysis of the proximity and skin effects on copper loss in a stator core

Accurate prediction of power loss distribution within an electrical device is highly desirable as it allows thermal behavior to be evaluated at the early design stage. Three-dimensional (3-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA) is applied to calculate dc and ac copper losses in the armature winding at high-frequency sinusoidal currents. The main goal of this paper is showing the end-winding effect on copper losses. Copper losses at high frequency are dominated by the skin and proximity effects. A time-varying current has a tendency to concentrate near the surfaces of conductors, and if the frequency is very high, the current is restricted to a very thin layer near the conductor surface. This phenomenon of nonuniform distribution of time-varying currents in conductors is known as the skin effect. The term proximity effect refers to the influence of alternating current in one conductor on the current distribution in another, nearby conductor. To evaluate the ac copper loss within the analyzed machine a simplified approach is adopted using one segment of stator core. To demonstrate an enhanced copper loss due to ac operation, the dc and ac resistances are calculated. The resistances ratio ac to dc is strongly dependent on frequency, temperature, shape of slot and size of slot opening.

In this paper we present the initial implementation of an advanced communication and networking solution that can enable the coordination and cooperation of autonomous mobile marine robots. To enable such a heterogeneous network three main research areas have been blended: 1) communications, 2) networking, and 3) decentralized cooperative localization and control. This paper focuses on the first two components and addresses the integration of the third one. Due to the challenges of the underwater environment, novel communication software and hardware have to be investigated to provide the level of flexibility and features that are required for efficient networking and robots cooperation. Robust and reliable distributed networking protocols have to be developed and implemented to enable an efficient sharing of data and control messages among heterogeneous surface and underwater platforms. Moreover, the combination of communications, networking and cooperative navigation has to be addressed in order to develop more capable, distributed and efficient underwater systems. ©2015 IEEE.

We present an optical bus-based Chip Multiprocessor architecture where the processing cores share an optical single-level cache unit. Physically, the optical cache is implemented externally in a separate chip located next to the CPU die. The cache interconnection system is realized through WDM optical interfaces that connect the shared cache module with the processing cores and the Main Memory via spatial-multiplexed optical waveguides; hence, the CPU-DRAM communication completely takes place in the optical domain. To evaluate the shared optical cache approach, we carry out system-level simulations of 6 realistic processor parallel workloads via the Gem5 platform. The optical cache architecture is compared against the conventional electronic Chip Multiprocessor topology that uses dedicated on-chip L1 electronic caches and a shared L2 cache. The results show significant reduction in the L1 miss rate of up to 96% for certain cases; on average, a performance speed-up of up to 20.53% or a reduction of up to 65.8% in cache capacity requirements is attained. Combined with high-bandwidth CPU-DRAM bus solutions based on optical interconnects, the proposed design is a quite promising system architecture that bridges the gap between high-speed optically connected CPU-DRAM schemes and high-speed optical memory technologies.

In this paper it is presented the initial study on the possibility of capturing the inner dynamic of Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm into a complex network structure. Inspired in previous works there are two different approaches for creating the complex network presented in this paper. Visualizations of the networks are presented and commented. The possibilities for future applications of the proposed design are given in detail.

This paper deals with mixed logical dynamical systems controlled via model predictive schemes. For this class of systems a centralized MPC approach is firstly introduced, in which the finite horizon optimal control problem is a mixed-integer quadratic programming problem aiming at minimizing the deviations of the system variables from their equilibrium points. Since the application in real time of these MPC schemes is sometimes limited because of the high computational load necessary to solve the finite horizon optimal control problem, a distributed MPC scheme is proposed, characterized by two different and alternative algorithms. An important application is then introduced to assess the proposed approaches, i.e. ramp metering freeway traffic control. Referring to this applicative case, the two distributed control algorithms are compared, via simulation, with the centralized MPC scheme and with a completely decentralized one. © 2014 American Automatic Control Council.

This paper investigates group/team development in computer engineering courses at a University in the Central USA from the perspective of organization behavior theory, specifically Tuckman's model of the stages of group development. The investigation, conducted through linguistic analysis of student reflection essays, and through focus group interviews, also presents STEM education researchers with a method to obtain nuanced information about interpersonal skills issues such as how groups and teams function. A third contribution of the paper is a review of the organizational behavior literature on teams and groups with a concern for its application to modern engineering education.

The estimation of traffic densities in portions of road links is an important open problem. This work contributes to the topic proposing a distributed switched observer design method, based on Luenberger-like and consensus ideas. To this aim, a switching mode model (SMM) is employed, representing the freeway system switching among different sets of linear difference equations. The proposed scheme allows every observer to estimate the densities of the overall system, with very limited information exchange requirements between observers. Asymptotic stability of the overall scheme is proved when the system operates under observable modes, together with L_2-gain disturbance rejection capabilities. The solution is provided in terms of a set of LMIs that use the structure of the SMM to alleviate the computational requirements. The effectiveness of the approach is shown with simulation examples.

We present a methodology, called communication-aware virtual infrastructures (COMAVI), for the concurrent migration of multiple Virtual Machines (VMs) in cloud computing infrastructures, which aims at the optimum use of the available computational and network resources, by capturing the interdependencies between the communicating VMs. This methodology uses multiple criteria for selecting the VMs that will migrate, with different weights assigned to each of them. COMAVI also selects the computing sites/units where the migrating VMs will be hosted, by accounting for the way migration affects the logical (or virtual) topologies formed by the communicating VMs and viewing this selection as a logical topology reconfiguration problem. COMAVI resolves the maximum possible number of VM resource shortages, while tending to minimize the number of migrations performed, the induced network overhead, the logical topology reconfigurations required, and the corresponding service interruptions. We evaluate the proposed method through simulations, where we exhibit their performance benefits. © 2014 IEEE.
