Schematic metro maps provide an effective means of simplifying the geographical configuration of public rapid transportation systems. Nonetheless, travelers still find it difficult to identify routes of a specific topology on the maps because it is usually hidden behind the conventional octilinear layout of the entire map. In this paper, we present an approach to designing schematic maps with loop lines, which are drawn as circles together with annotation labels for guiding different traveling purposes. Our idea here is to formulate the aesthetic criteria as mathematical constraints in the mixed-integer programming model, which allows us to either align stations on the loop line at a grid if they are interchange stations or noninterchange stations on a circle otherwise. We then distribute the annotation labels associated with stations on the loop line evenly to the four side boundary of the map domain in order to make full use of the annotation space, while maximally avoiding intersections between leader lines and the metro network by employing a flow network algorithm. Finally, we present several experimental results generated by our prototype system to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

Human motion data captured from wearable devices such as smart watches can be utilized for activity recognition or emergency event detection, especially in the case of elderly or disabled people living independently in their homes. The output of such sensors is data streams that require real-time recognition, especially in emergency situations. This paper presents a novel application that utilizes the low-cost Pebble Smart Watch together with an Android device (i.e a smart phone) and allows the efficient transmission, storage and processing of motion data. The paper includes the details of the stream data capture and processing methodology, along with an initial evaluation of the achieved accuracy in detecting falls. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014.

Partially Observable Markov Decision Processes (POMDPs) have been met with great success in planning domains where agents must balance actions that provide knowledge and actions that provide reward. Recently, nonparametric Bayesian methods have been successfully applied to POMDPs to obviate the need of a priori knowledge of the size of the state space, allowing to assume that the number of visited states may grow as the agent explores its environment. These approaches rely on the assumption that the agent's environment remains stationary;however, in real-world scenarios the environment may change over time. In this work, we aim to address this inadequacy by introducing a dynamic nonparametric Bayesian POMDP model that both allows for automatic inference of the (distributional) representations of POMDP states, and for capturing non-stationarity in the modeled environments. Formulation of our method is based on imposition of a suitable dynamic hierarchical Dirichlet process (dHDP) prior over state transitions. We derive efficient algorithms for model inference and action planning and evaluate it on several benchmark tasks. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

In this work, the contribution of organic-inorganic hybrids (di-ureasils) as integrated optics substrates for thermo-optical actuated devices is revisited. The hybrids are UV self-patterned without the need of photoinitiators and have a large thermo-optic coefficient, enabling the fabrication of IO devices using direct-UV lased writing. Examples include thermal actuated Mach-Zehnder (MZ) interferometers and tunable waveguide polarization controllers with for the new generation of optical communications.

This paper describes the LifeCLEF 2014 fish task, which aimed at benchmarking automatic fish detection and recognition methods by processing underwater visual data. The task consisted of videobased subtasks for fish detection and fish species recognition in videos and one image-based task for fish species classification in still images. Our underwater visual datasets consisted of about 2,000 videos taken from the Fish4Knowledge video repository and more than 200,000 annotations automatically obtained and manually validated. About fifty teams registered to the fish task, but only two teams submitted runs: the I3S team for subtask 3 and LSIS/DYNI team for subtask 4. The results achieved by both teams are satisfactory.

Genetic factors play a key role in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) whole genome sequence (WGS) data offers new power to investigate mechanisms of AD by combining entire genome sequences with neuroimaging and clinical data. Here we explore the ADNI WGS SNP (single nucleotide polymorphism) data in depth and extract approximately six million valid SNP features. We investigate imaging genetics associations using Lasso regression - a widely used sparse learning technique. To solve the large-scale Lasso problem more efficiently, we employ a highly efficient screening rule for Lasso - called dual polytope projections (DPP) - to remove irrelevant features from the optimization problem. Experiments demonstrate that the DPP can effectively identify irrelevant features and leads to a 400× speedup. This allows us for the first time to run the compute-intensive model selection procedure called stability selection to rank SNPs that may affect the brain and AD risk.

Object tracking and manipulation is an important process for many applications in robotics and computer vision. A novel 3D pose estimation of objects using reflectionally symmetry formulated in Conformai Geometric Algebra (CGA) is proposed in this work. The synthesis of the kinematics model for robots and a sliding mode controller using the CGA approach is described. Real time implementation results are presented for the pose estimation of object using a stereo vision system. © 2014 IEEE.

Zebrafish animal is considered as one of the most suitable animals to test toxicity of compounds due many features such as transparency and a large number of embryos produced in each mating. The main problem of the zebrafish-based toxicity test is the manual inspection of thousands of animals images in different phases and this is not feasible enough for the analysis, i.e. it is slow and may be inaccurate process. To help addressing this problem, in this paper, an automated classification of alive (healthy) and coagulant (died because of toxic compounds) zebrafish embryos are proposed. The embryos’ images are used to extract some features using the Segmentation-based Fractal Texture Analysis (SFTA) technique. The Rotation Forest classifier is then used to match between testing and training features (i.e. to classify alive and coagulant embryos). The experiments have proved that choosing threshold value of SFTA technique and the size of the rotation forest classifier have a great impact on the classification accuracy. With accuracy around 99.98%, the experimental results have showed that the proposed model is a very promising step toward a fully automated toxicity test during drug discovery.

Concerns about global warming and energy costs have induced transport companies to take measures to reduce fuel consumption. Among the different options available, efficient driving is widely used, allowing a reduction in fuel consumption of around 10%. However, changing the driver's behavior is not exempt of problems. The success of efficient driving techniques in the long term is related to the motivation of the driver and, for that reason, an adaptive training system according to the driver's needs can prove much more successful than giving general instructions that do not solve their inefficiencies. Therefore, a properly description of the driver's behavior and the adaptation of the evaluation analysis to the context is a key factor for the learning process in efficient driving. In this paper we propose an adaptive learning system for efficient driving, which allows the evaluation of professional drivers of urban public transport in their work environment. With the proposed system, we can identify failure points relating to the context, making a focused evaluation. The first evaluation results show that the set of patterns designed to evaluate the application of efficient driving techniques can identify the incorrect actions of the drivers. Based on the results, it is possible to make personalized recommendations to improve driver performance.

A Bell test is a randomized trial that compares experimental observations against the philosophical worldview of local realism1, in which the properties of the physical world are independent of our observation of them and no signal travels faster than light. A Bell test requires spatially distributed entanglement, fast and high-efficiency detection and unpredictable measurement settings2,3. Although technology can satisfy the first two of these requirements4–7, the use of physical devices to choose settings in a Bell test involves making assumptions about the physics that one aims to test. Bell himself noted this weakness in using physical setting choices and argued that human ‘free will’ could be used rigorously to ensure unpredictability in Bell tests8. Here we report a set of local-realism tests using human choices, which avoids assumptions about predictability in physics. We recruited about 100,000 human participants to play an online video game that incentivizes fast, sustained input of unpredictable selections and illustrates Bell-test methodology9. The participants generated 97,347,490 binary choices, which were directed via a scalable web platform to 12 laboratories on five continents, where 13 experiments tested local realism using photons5,6, single atoms7, atomic ensembles10, and superconducting devices11. Over a 12-hour period on 30 November 2016, participants worldwide provided a sustained data flow of over 1,000 bits per second to the experiments, which used different human-generated data to choose each measurement setting. The observed correlations strongly contradict local realism and other realistic positions in bipartite and tripartite12 scenarios. Project outcomes include closing the ‘freedom-of-choice loophole’ (the possibility that the setting choices are influenced by ‘hidden variables’ to correlate with the particle properties13), the utilization of video-game methods14 for rapid collection of human generated randomness, and the use of network
