The combination of numerous simple influences between the components of a Biological Regulatory Network (BRN) often leads to behaviors that cannot be grasped intuitively. They thus call for the development of proper mathematical methods to delineate their dynamical properties. As a consequence, formal methods and computer tools for the modeling and simulation of BRNs become essential. Our recently introduced discrete formalism called the Process Hitting (PH), a restriction of synchronous automata networks, is notably suitable to such study. In this paper, we propose a new logical approach to perform model-checking of dynamical properties of BRNs modeled in PH. Our work here focuses on state reachability properties on the one hand, and on the identification of fixed points on the other hand. The originality of our model-checking approach relies in the exhaustive enumeration of all possible simulations verifying the dynamical properties thanks to the use of Answer Set Programming. © 2015 IEEE.

Standard assumption of pattern recognition problem is that processed elements belong to recognized classes. However, in practice, we are often faced with elements presented to recognizers, which do not belong to such classes. For instance, paper-to-computer recognition technologies (e.g. character or music recognition technologies, both printed and handwritten) must cope with garbage elements produced at segmentation level. In this paper we distinguish between elements of desired classes and other ones. We call them native and foreign elements, respectively. The assumption that we have only native elements results in incorrect inclusion of foreign ones into desired classes. Since foreign elements are usually not known at the stage of recognizer construction, standard classification methods fail to eliminate them. In this paper we study construction of recognizers based on support vector machines and aimed on coping with foreign elements. Several tests are performed on real-world data.

In the article we have discussed an approach to time series modelling based on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs). We have introduced FCM design method that is based on replicated ordered time series data points. We named this representation method history h, where h is number of consecutive data points we gather. Custom procedure for concepts/nodes extraction follows the same convention. The objective of the study reported in this paper was to investigate how increasing h influences modelling accuracy. We have shown on a selection of 12 time series that the higher the h, the smaller the error. Increasing h improves model's quality without increasing FCM's size. The method is stable - gains are comparable for FCMs of different sizes.

As a result of increased urbanisation, people tend to choose their transport more flexible using different transportation modes during one trip. Thereby it is crucial to keep the traveler up-to-date with real-time information during the journey. As the amount of incoming data in intermodal route planning services is growing consistently and the reaction to unexpected events has to be fulfilled in real-time, the need for a solution which is able to deal with this requirements is rising. Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a main component of an Event-Driven Architecture (EDA), which is used to analyze and act on real-time streaming data and was designed to solve big data problems. We propose a conceptual architecture and a prototypical implementation of an EDA for a real-time intermodal route guide (RTiG) to assist traveler on their journey by providing travel assistance information in real-time and thus reacting on unexpected events. Our evaluation results show that our conceptual architecture was able to process real-time data from multiple thousand users in μs.

The actor model is one of the main models for distributed computation. Timed Rebeca is a timed extension of the actor-based modeling language Rebeca. Although Rebeca is supported by a rich verification toolset, Timed Rebeca has not had an executable formal semantics, and has therefore had limited support for formal analysis. In this paper, we provide a formal semantics of Timed Rebeca in Real-Time Maude. We have automated the translation from Timed Rebeca to Real-Time Maude, allowing Timed Rebeca models to be automatically analyzed using Real-Time Maude's reachability analysis tool and timed CTL model checker. This enables a formal model-based methodology which combines the convenience of intuitive modeling in Timed Rebeca with formal verification in Real-Time Maude. We illustrate this methodology with a collision avoidance protocol for wireless networks. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

A tag-based item recommendation method generates an ordered list of items, likely interesting to a particular user, using the users past tagging behaviour. However, the users tagging behaviour varies in different tagging systems. A potential problem in generating quality recommendation is how to build user profiles, that interprets user behaviour to be effectively used, in recommendation models. Generally, the recommendation methods are made to work with specific types of user profiles, and may not work well with different datasets. In this paper, we investigate several tagging data interpretation and representation schemes that can lead to building an effective user profile. We discuss the various benefits a scheme brings to a recommendation method by highlighting the representative features of user tagging behaviours on a specific dataset. Empirical analysis shows that each interpretation scheme forms a distinct data representation which eventually affects the recommendation result. Results on various datasets show that an interpretation scheme should be selected based on the dominant usage in the tagging data (i.e. either higher amount of tags or higher amount of items present). The usage represents the characteristic of user tagging behaviour in the system. The results also demonstrate how the scheme is able to address the cold-start user problem. © 2014, Australian computer Society, Inc.

This study aims to present a new mathematical based evaluation method for service composition with respects to security aspects. Web service composition as complex problem solver in service computing has become one of the recent challenging issues in today's web environment. It makes a new added value service through combination of available basic services to address the problem requirements. Despite the importance of service composition in service computing, security issues have not been addressed in this area. Considering the dazzling growth of number of service based transactions, making a secure composite service from candidate services with different security concerns is a demanding task. To deal with this challenge, different techniques have been employed which have direct impacts on secure service composition efficiency. Nonetheless, little work has been dedicated to deeply investigate those impacts on service composition outperformance. Therefore, the focus of this study is to evaluate the existing approaches based on their applied techniques and QoS aspects. A mathematicalbased security-aware evaluation framework is proposed wherein Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multiple criteria decision making technique, is adopted. The proposed framework is tested on state-of-the-art approaches and the statistical analysis of the results presents the efficiency and correctness of the proposed work. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.

Tourists become increasingly dependent on mobile city guides to locate tourist services and retrieve information about nearby points of interest (POIs) when visiting unknown destinations. Although several city guides support the provision of personalized tour recommendations to assist tourists visiting the most interesting attractions, existing tour planners only consider walking tours. Herein, we introduce eCOMPASS, a context-aware mobile application which also considers the option of using public transit for moving around. Far beyond than just providing navigational aid, eCOMPASS incorporates multimodality (i.e. time dependency) within its routing logic aiming at deriving nearoptimal sequencing of POIs along recommended tours so as to best utilize time available for sightseeing and minimize waiting time at transit stops. Further advancing the state of the art, eCOMPASS allows users to define arbitrary start/end locations (e.g. the current location of a mobile user) rather than choosing among a fixed set of locations. This paper describes the routing algorithm which comprises the core functionality of eCOMPASS and discusses the implementation details of the mobile application using the metropolitan area of Berlin (Germany) as case study. Over the recent past years research effort has been dedicated towards addressing a generic solution in System of Systems (SoS) control problems. Two are the main obstacles that have to be bypassed in such problem cases, especially in real life applications, rendering the optimization problem into a complicated/challenging one: (i) modelling/simulation tools are usually used in order to construct an as-close-as-possible to reality accurate model, whose construction though requires a considerable amount of time and effort and (ii) furthermore, standard control system designs when applied to SoS exhibit poor performance as they are required to handle very high-dimensional problems. In this paper, we present a first attempt towards addressing these issues. More precisely, a new adaptive optimal control methodology is presented and evaluated. The main attributes of the proposed control methodology is its local nature with minimum requirements for coordination between the constituent system of the SoS and its model-free nature.
