The population ageing trend has created an imperative need for ICTbased solutions that will support continuous care provision and help elders prolong the time they live independently in their own home environment. The ADVENT project aims at providing a comfortable, safe and secure environment to support the daily living of elders through a set of adaptive and demanddriven services. This paper presents the user and system requirements analysis results, based on which the high-level architecture of the core ADVENT system was drawn. This architecture highlights the home environment and the ambient intelligence platform, which are described in detail on a design level. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Cloud networks underpin most of todays' socio-economical Information Communication Technology (ICT) environments due to their intrinsic capabilities such as elasticity and service transparency. Undoubtedly, this increased dependence of numerous always-on services with the cloud is also subject to a number of security threats. An emerging critical aspect is related with the adequate identification and detection of malware. In the majority of cases, malware is the first building block for larger security threats such as distributed denial of service attacks (e.g. DDoS); thus its immediate detection is of crucial importance. In this paper we introduce a malware detection technique based on Ensemble Empirical Mode Decomposition (E-EMD) which is performed on the hypervisor level and jointly considers system and network information from every Virtual Machine (VM). Under two pragmatic cloud-specific scenarios instrumented in our controlled experimental testbed we show that our proposed technique can reach detection accuracy rates over 90% for a range of malware samples. In parallel we demonstrate the superiority of the introduced approach after comparison with a covariance-based anomaly detection technique that has been broadly used in previous studies. Consequently, we argue that our presented scheme provides a promising foundation towards the efficient detection of malware in modern virtualized cloud environments.

We are currently witnessing the emergence of two paradigms in parallel computing: streaming processing and multi-core CPUs. Represented by solid commercial products widely available in commodity PCs, GPUs and multi-core CPUs bring together an unprecedented combination of high performance at low cost. The scientific computing community needs to keep pace with application models and middleware which scale efficiently to hundreds of internal processing units. The purpose of the work we present here is twofold: first, a cooperative environment is designed so that both parallel models can coexist and complement one another. Second, beyond the parallelism of multiple internal cores, further parallelism is introduced when multiple CPU sockets, multiple GPUs, and multiple nodes are combined within a unique multi-processor platform which exceeds 10 TFLOPS when using 16 nodes. We illustrate our cooperative parallelization approach by implementing a large-scale, biomedical image analysis application which contains a number of assorted kernels including typical streaming operators, cooccurrence matrices, convolutions, and histograms. Experimental results are compared among different implementation strategies and almost linear speed-up is achieved when all coexisting methods in CPUs and GPUs are combined. This paper introduces an amended hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection model with an immune response term and an alanine aminotransferase(ALT) term. It has been proved that if a basic virus reproductive number R0 < 1, then the virus free equilibrium point of the model is globally asymptotically stable;if R0 > 1, then the immune depletion equilibrium point of the model is globally asymptotically stable. This result implies that if an HBV infected patient has R0 < 1, then the patient will eventually recover even if infected with a large amount of virus. Simulating the dynamics of evolutions of serum HBV DNA levels and ALT levels for 115 Asians and 113 non-Asians HBeAg positive chronic hepatitis B(CHB) patients' Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate(TDF) 48 weeks therapy reported by C. Pan et al., the results show that TDF anti-HBV infection therapy may not only suppress the HBV DNA levels via destructing patients' infected hepatocytes but also activate patients' ability of cytokine-midiated non-cytolytic HBV clearance, which clears HBV directly without damaging patients' hepatocytes.

Quality measurements of XML schemas are difficult to perform objectively, providing all aspects of quality demands. However, an approximate evaluation of XML schema's quality and validation, whether a higher version of an XML schema standard is in fact an improvement, is useful information for XML schema users. The paper addresses who are the users of XML schemas, what aspects of XML schemas are vital to its quality and how to measure those aspects. We present 3 quality aspects in more detail: (1) structure type, (2) re-use possibilities and (3) balance of building blocks. A table of all included variables, that were measured, is provided. Based on results of over 200 XML schemas, quality assessment are given, including data standardization methods. Measurement results of XML schema's versions are compared, providing insight into quality growth (or decline) through versioning. © 2014 MIPRO.

The combination of numerous simple influences between the components of a Biological Regulatory Network (BRN) often leads to behaviors that cannot be grasped intuitively. They thus call for the development of proper mathematical methods to delineate their dynamical properties. As a consequence, formal methods and computer tools for the modeling and simulation of BRNs become essential. Our recently introduced discrete formalism called the Process Hitting (PH), a restriction of synchronous automata networks, is notably suitable to such study. In this paper, we propose a new logical approach to perform model-checking of dynamical properties of BRNs modeled in PH. Our work here focuses on state reachability properties on the one hand, and on the identification of fixed points on the other hand. The originality of our model-checking approach relies in the exhaustive enumeration of all possible simulations verifying the dynamical properties thanks to the use of Answer Set Programming. © 2015 IEEE.

In the article we have discussed an approach to time series modelling based on Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs). We have introduced FCM design method that is based on replicated ordered time series data points. We named this representation method history h, where h is number of consecutive data points we gather. Custom procedure for concepts/nodes extraction follows the same convention. The objective of the study reported in this paper was to investigate how increasing h influences modelling accuracy. We have shown on a selection of 12 time series that the higher the h, the smaller the error. Increasing h improves model's quality without increasing FCM's size. The method is stable - gains are comparable for FCMs of different sizes.

Standard assumption of pattern recognition problem is that processed elements belong to recognized classes. However, in practice, we are often faced with elements presented to recognizers, which do not belong to such classes. For instance, paper-to-computer recognition technologies (e.g. character or music recognition technologies, both printed and handwritten) must cope with garbage elements produced at segmentation level. In this paper we distinguish between elements of desired classes and other ones. We call them native and foreign elements, respectively. The assumption that we have only native elements results in incorrect inclusion of foreign ones into desired classes. Since foreign elements are usually not known at the stage of recognizer construction, standard classification methods fail to eliminate them. In this paper we study construction of recognizers based on support vector machines and aimed on coping with foreign elements. Several tests are performed on real-world data.

As a result of increased urbanisation, people tend to choose their transport more flexible using different transportation modes during one trip. Thereby it is crucial to keep the traveler up-to-date with real-time information during the journey. As the amount of incoming data in intermodal route planning services is growing consistently and the reaction to unexpected events has to be fulfilled in real-time, the need for a solution which is able to deal with this requirements is rising. Complex Event Processing (CEP) is a main component of an Event-Driven Architecture (EDA), which is used to analyze and act on real-time streaming data and was designed to solve big data problems. We propose a conceptual architecture and a prototypical implementation of an EDA for a real-time intermodal route guide (RTiG) to assist traveler on their journey by providing travel assistance information in real-time and thus reacting on unexpected events. Our evaluation results show that our conceptual architecture was able to process real-time data from multiple thousand users in μs.
