Recently, a lot of research has been dedicated to address the problem of facial expression recognition in dynamic sequences of 3D face scans. On the contrary, no research has been conducted on facial expression retrieval using dynamic 3D face scans. This paper illustrates the first results on the area of dynamic 3D facial expression retrieval. To this end, a novel descriptor is created, namely GeoTopo, capturing the topological as well as the geometric information of the 3D face scans along time. Experiments have been implemented using the angry, happy and surprise expressions of the publicly available dataset BU - 4DFE. The obtained retrieval results are very promising. Furthermore, a methodology which exploits the retrieval results, in order to achieve unsupervised dynamic 3D facial expression recognition, is presented. The aforementioned unsupervised methodology achieves classification accuracy comparable to the supervised dynamic 3D facial expression recognition state-of-the-art techniques. © The Eurographics Association 2014.

This paper presents a method for visualizing and analyzing Multiple Origin Autonomous System (MOAS) incidents on Border Gateway Protocol (BGP), for the purpose of detecting concurrent prefix hijack. Concurrent prefix hijacks happen when an unauthorized network originates prefixes that belong to multiple other networks. Towards the goal of accurately identifying such events, multiple features are extracted from the BGP records and visualized using parallel coordinates enhanced with visual querying capabilities. The proposed visual queries enable the analyst to select a significant subset of the initial dataset for further analysis, based on the values of multiple features. This procedure allows for the efficient visual fusion of the proposed features and the accurate identification of prefix hijacks. Most of the previous approaches on BGP hijack detection depend on static methods in order to fuse the information from multiple features and identify anomalies. The proposed visual feature fusion, however, allows the human operator to incorporate his expert knowledge into the analysis, so as to dynamically investigate the observed events, and accurately identify anomalies. The efficiency of the proposed approach is demonstrated on state-of-the-art BGP events. © IFIP International Federation for Information Processing 2014.

Several neuroimaging studies have suggested that functional brain connectivity networks exhibit "small-world" characteristics, whereas recent studies based on structural data have proposed a "rich-club" organization of brain networks, whereby hubs of high connection density tend to connect among themselves compared to nodes of lower density. In this study, we adopted an "attack strategy" to compare the rich-club and small-world organizations and identify the model that describes best the topology of brain connectivity. We hypothesized that the highest reduction in global efficiency caused by a targeted attack on each model's hubs would reveal the organization that better describes the topology of the underlying brain networks. We applied this approach to magnetoencephalographic data obtained at rest from neurologically intact controls and mild traumatic brain injury patients. Functional connectivity networks were computed using phase-to-amplitude cross-frequency coupling between the δ and β frequency bands. Our results suggest that resting state MEG connectivity networks follow a rich-club organization.

The wide adoption of the Wireless Senor Networks (WSNs) applications around the world has increased the amount of the sensor data which contribute to the complexity of Big Data. This has emerged the need to the use of in-network data processing techniques which are very crucial for the success of the big data framework. This article gives overview and discussion about the state-of-the-art of the data mining and data fusion techniques designed for the WSNs. It discusses how these techniques can prepare the sensor data inside the network (in-network) before any further processing as big data. This is very important for both of the WSNs and the big data framework. For the WSNs, the in-network pre-processing techniques could lead to saving in their limited resources. For the big data side, receiving a clean, non-redundant and relevant data would reduce the excessive data volume, thus an overload reduction will be obtained at the big data processing platforms and the discovery of values from these data will be accelerated.

Over the last decade or so, significant research has focused on defining Quality of Experience (QoE) of Multimedia Systems and identifying the key factors that collectively determine it. Some consensus thus exists as to the role of System Factors, Human Factors and Context Factors. In this paper, the notion of context is broadened to include information gleaned from simultaneous out-of-band channels, such as social network trend analytics, that can be used if interpreted in a timely manner, to help further optimise QoE. A case study involving simulation of HTTP adaptive streaming (HAS) and load balancing in a content distribution network (CDN) in a flash crowd scenario is presented with encouraging results.

Quality measurements of XML schemas are difficult to perform objectively, providing all aspects of quality demands. However, an approximate evaluation of XML schema's quality and validation, whether a higher version of an XML schema standard is in fact an improvement, is useful information for XML schema users. The paper addresses who are the users of XML schemas, what aspects of XML schemas are vital to its quality and how to measure those aspects. We present 3 quality aspects in more detail: (1) structure type, (2) re-use possibilities and (3) balance of building blocks. A table of all included variables, that were measured, is provided. Based on results of over 200 XML schemas, quality assessment are given, including data standardization methods. Measurement results of XML schema's versions are compared, providing insight into quality growth (or decline) through versioning.

This work proposes a policy iteration procedure for the synthesis of optimal and globally stabilizing control policies for Linear Time Invariant (LTI) Asymptotically Null-controllable with Bounded Inputs (ANCBI) systems. This class includes systems with eigenvalues on the imaginary axis (possibly repeated) but no pole with positive real part. The proposed policy iteration relies on a class of piecewise quadratic Lyapunov functions which is non-differentiable, but continuous, and polynomial in both the state and the deadzone functions of the input signals. The second step of the policy iteration is based on a piecewise control policy improvement. An important aspect of the proposed piecewise policy is that at each step of the iteration the computed policy is globally stabilizing and the existence of an improving value function is guaranteed as well. The solution to the inequalities which is required to hold at each step of the policy iteration, is obtained by solving Sum-of-Squares Programs (SOSP) that can be efficiently implemented with semidefinite programming (SDP) solvers.

Wearable devices performing advanced bio-signal analysis algorithms are aimed to foster a revolution in healthcare provision of chronic cardiac diseases. In this context, energy efficiency is of paramount importance, as long-term monitoring must be ensured while relying on a tiny power source. Operating at a scaled supply voltage, just above the threshold voltage, effectively helps in saving substantial energy, but it makes circuits, and especially memories, more prone to errors, threatening the correct execution of algorithms. The use of error detection and correction codes may help to protect the entire memory content, however it incurs in large area and energy overheads which may not be compatible with the tight energy budgets of wearable systems. To cope with this challenge, in this paper we propose to limit the overhead of traditional schemes by selectively detecting and correcting errors only in data highly impacting the end-to-end quality of service of ultra-low power wearable electrocardiogram (ECG) devices. This partition adopts the protection of either significant words or significant bits of each data element, according to the application characteristics (statistical properties of the data in the application buffers), and its impact in determining the output. The proposed heterogeneous error protection scheme in real ECG signals allows substantial energy savings (11% in wearable devices) compared to state-of-the-art approaches, like ECC, in which the whole memory is protected against errors. At the same time, it also results in negligible output quality degradation in the evaluated power spectrum analysis application of ECG signals.

Disease comorbidity is an important aspect of phenotype associations and reflects overlapping pathogenesis between diseases. Existing comorbidity studies usually focused on specific diseases and patient populations. In this study, we systematically mined and analyzed disease comorbidity patterns without restricting disease types and patient populations. We presented a data mining approach and extracted comorbidity patterns from a patient-disease database in the drug adverse event reporting system. The database contains records of 3,354,043 patients. We first demonstrated that the data are not severely biased towards specific patient populations and valuable for comorbidity mining. Then we developed an automatic pipeline to process the data, and applied an association rule mining algorithm to mine comorbidity relationships among multiple diseases. Our approach extracted 8,576 comorbidity patterns for 613 diseases. We constructed a disease comorbidity network from these patterns and demonstrated that the comorbidity clusters reflect genetic associations between diseases. Different from previous studies based on relative risk, which tends to identify comorbidities for rare diseases, our approach extracted many patterns for common diseases. We applied the approach on colorectal cancer, and found interesting relationships between colorectal cancer and metabolic disorders, which may lead to promising pathogenesis discoveries. © 2014 Springer International Publishing Switzerland.

Propagation of information encoded in spin degrees of freedom through networks of coupled spins enables important applications in spintronics and quantum information processing. We study control of information propagation in networks of spin-1/2 particles with uniform nearest neighbor couplings forming a ring with a single excitation in the network as simple prototype of a router for spin-based information. Specifically optimizing spatially distributed potentials, which remain constant during information transfer, simplifies the implementation of the routing scheme. However, the limited degrees of freedom makes finding a control that maximizes the transfer probability in a short time difficult. We show that the structure of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors must fulfill a specific condition to be able to maximize the transfer fidelity, and demonstrate that a specific choice among the many potential structures that fulfill this condition significantly improves the solutions found by optimal control.
