The estimation of traffic densities in portions of road links is an important open problem. This work contributes to the topic proposing a distributed switched observer design method, based on Luenberger-like and consensus ideas. To this aim, a switching mode model (SMM) is employed, representing the freeway system switching among different sets of linear difference equations. The proposed scheme allows every observer to estimate the densities of the overall system, with very limited information exchange requirements between observers. Asymptotic stability of the overall scheme is proved when the system operates under observable modes, together with L_2-gain disturbance rejection capabilities. The solution is provided in terms of a set of LMIs that use the structure of the SMM to alleviate the computational requirements. The effectiveness of the approach is shown with simulation examples.

Schematic metro maps provide an effective means of simplifying the geographical configuration of public rapid transportation systems. Nonetheless, travelers still find it difficult to identify routes of a specific topology on the maps because it is usually hidden behind the conventional octilinear layout of the entire map. In this paper, we present an approach to designing schematic maps with loop lines, which are drawn as circles together with annotation labels for guiding different traveling purposes. Our idea here is to formulate the aesthetic criteria as mathematical constraints in the mixed-integer programming model, which allows us to either align stations on the loop line at a grid if they are interchange stations or noninterchange stations on a circle otherwise. We then distribute the annotation labels associated with stations on the loop line evenly to the four side boundary of the map domain in order to make full use of the annotation space, while maximally avoiding intersections between leader lines and the metro network by employing a flow network algorithm. Finally, we present several experimental results generated by our prototype system to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach.

This paper describes the LifeCLEF 2014 fish task, which aimed at benchmarking automatic fish detection and recognition methods by processing underwater visual data. The task consisted of videobased subtasks for fish detection and fish species recognition in videos and one image-based task for fish species classification in still images. Our underwater visual datasets consisted of about 2,000 videos taken from the Fish4Knowledge video repository and more than 200,000 annotations automatically obtained and manually validated. About fifty teams registered to the fish task, but only two teams submitted runs: the I3S team for subtask 3 and LSIS/DYNI team for subtask 4. The results achieved by both teams are satisfactory.

In this work, the contribution of organic-inorganic hybrids (di-ureasils) as integrated optics substrates for thermo-optical actuated devices is revisited. The hybrids are UV self-patterned without the need of photoinitiators and have a large thermo-optic coefficient, enabling the fabrication of IO devices using direct-UV lased writing. Accurate prediction of power loss distribution within an electrical device is highly desirable as it allows thermal behavior to be evaluated at the early design stage. Three-dimensional (3-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA) is applied to calculate dc and ac copper losses in the armature winding at high-frequency sinusoidal currents. The main goal of this paper is showing the end-winding effect on copper losses. Copper losses at high frequency are dominated by the skin and proximity effects. A time-varying current has a tendency to concentrate near the surfaces of conductors, and if the frequency is very high, the current is restricted to a very thin layer near the conductor surface. This phenomenon of nonuniform distribution of time-varying currents in conductors is known as the skin effect. The term proximity effect refers to the influence of alternating current in one conductor on the current distribution in another, nearby conductor. To evaluate the ac copper loss within the analyzed machine a simplified approach is adopted using one segment of stator core. To demonstrate an enhanced copper loss due to ac operation, the dc and ac resistances are calculated. The resistances ratio ac to dc is strongly dependent on frequency, temperature, shape of slot and size of slot opening.
