We consider the problem of learning probabilistic models from relational data. One of the key issues with relational data is class imbalance where the number of negative examples far outnumbers the number of positive examples. The common approach for dealing with this problem is the use of sub-sampling of negative examples. We, on the other hand, consider a soft margin approach that explicitly trades off between the false positives and false negatives. We apply this approach to the recently successful formalism of relational functional gradient boosting. Specifically, we modify the objective function of the learning problem to explicitly include the trade-off between false positives and negatives. We show empirically that this approach is more successful in handling the class imbalance problem than the original framework that weighed all the examples equally.

This study aims to present a new mathematical based evaluation method for service composition with respects to security aspects. Web service composition as complex problem solver in service computing has become one of the recent challenging issues in today's web environment. It makes a new added value service through combination of available basic services to address the problem requirements. Despite the importance of service composition in service computing, security issues have not been addressed in this area. Considering the dazzling growth of number of service based transactions, making a secure composite service from candidate services with different security concerns is a demanding task. To deal with this challenge, different techniques have been employed which have direct impacts on secure service composition efficiency. Nonetheless, little work has been dedicated to deeply investigate those impacts on service composition outperformance. Therefore, the focus of this study is to evaluate the existing approaches based on their applied techniques and QoS aspects. A mathematicalbased security-aware evaluation framework is proposed wherein Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multiple criteria decision making technique, is adopted. The proposed framework is tested on state-of-the-art approaches and the statistical analysis of the results presents the efficiency and correctness of the proposed work. © Maxwell Scientific Organization, 2014.

This paper introduces the ADVENT project that focuses on providing a comfortable, safe and secure environment, supporting daily living of elders, while empowering their mobility and independency. We present a generic system architecture that emerged from user and system requirements analysis, which consists of four parts: i) the home monitoring environment, ii) the mobile personal monitoring and support, iii) the service deployment platform and iv) the communication infrastructure. These system parts are further described and several challenging issues from the ADVENT perspective are discussed. In addition, some potential R&D directions that will be carefully examined and evaluated in the next phases of the project are highlighted. Copyright 2014 ACM.

This paper work with a new system that provides distance learning and online training engineers. The purpose of this paper is to develop and provide web-based system for the handling and control of remote devices via the Internet. Remote devices are currently the industry or mobile robots [13]. For future product development machine in the factory will be included in the system. This article also discusses the current use of virtual reality tools in the fields of science and engineering education. One programming tool in particular, virtual reality modeling language (VRML) is presented in the light of its applications and capabilities in the development of computer visualization tool for education. One contribution of this paper is to present the software tools and examples that can encourage educators to develop a virtual reality model to improve teaching in their discipline. [12] This paper aims to introduce a software platform, called VALIP where users can build, share, and manipulate 3D content in cooperation with the interaction processes in a 3D context, while participating hardware and software devices can be physical and / or logical distributed and connected together via the Internet. VALIP the integration of virtual laboratories to appropriate partners; therefore, allowing access to all laboratories in any of the partners in the project. VALIP provides advanced laboratory for training and research within robotics and production engineering, and thus, provides a great laboratory facilities with only having to invest a limited amount of resources at the local level to the partner site.

The main goal of the FAMU experiment is the measurement of the hyperfine splitting (hfs) in the 1S state of muonic hydrogen ΔEhfs (μ - p)1S. The physical process behind this experiment is the following: μp are formed in a mixture of hydrogen and a higher-Z gas. When absorbing a photon at resonance-energy ΔEhfs ≈ 0.182 eV, in subsequent collisions with the surrounding H 2 molecules, the μp is quickly de-excited and accelerated by ~ 2/3 of the excitation energy. The observable is the time distribution of the K-lines X-rays emitted from the μZ formed by muon transfer (μp) + Z → (μZ)* + p, a reaction whose rate depends on the μp kinetic energy. The maximal response, to the tuned laser wavelength, of the time distribution of X-ray from K-lines of the (μZ)* cascade indicate the resonance. During the preparatory phase of the FAMU experiment, several measurements have been performed both to validate the methodology and to prepare the best configuration of target and detectors for the spectroscopic measurement. We present here the crucial study of the energy dependence of the transfer rate from muonic hydrogen to oxygen (Λ μp → μ0 ), precisely measured for the first time.

In this paper, we provide a constructive methodology for the design of decentralized control laws for a class of interconnected retarded systems subject to actuator disturbances. We consider Control Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals for only subsystems, thus reducing the difficulty with respect to finding an overall functional, and then provide a controller which, by means of a small-gain condition, guarantees practical input-to-state stability with respect to disturbances. If the disturbances are bounded, the controller allows to drive the system variables to any small neighborhood of the origin, by suitably tuning a control parameter.

Given their wide applicability, several sparse high-resolution spectral estimation techniques and their implementation have been examined in the recent literature. In this work, we further the topic by examining a computationally efficient implementation of the recent SMLA algorithms in the missing data case. The work is an extension of our implementation for the uniformly sampled case, and offers a notable computational gain as compared to the alternative implementations in the missing data case.

This paper presents two different printed directional antenna designs that use a ferrimagnetic compound (YIG) as part of their substrates. It investigates the influence of this material on the antenna radiation characteristics under the application of an external magnetic field. It was found that the proper application of the magnetic field in each design changes the antenna resonance and the radiation pattern. Especially in the second proposed design the polarization characteristics are also changed and the antenna is reconfigured from linearly to circularly polarized.
