In recent years, highly functional mobile handsets called smartphones have become increasingly widespread. This research investigates personal authentication by flick input of Japanese free text using a smartphone based on previous research into keystroke authentication using keyboards. Authentication experiments are performed with 43 participants, and an increase in authentication accuracy is found through extraction of new features.

This paper introduces an innovative adaptive hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO)-Gravitational Search Algorithm (GSA) dedicated to the optimal tuning of Takagi-Sugeno-Kang PI-fuzzy controllers (T-S-K PI-FCs). The adaptive hybrid PSO-GSA is comprised from five stages, which support the solving of optimization problems with objective functions that depend on the control error and on the output sensitivity function, and the variables of the objective functions are the fuzzy controller tuning parameters. The adaptive hybrid PSO-GSA is included in the controller tuning to offer control systems with T-S-K PI-FCs that ensure a reduced process parametric sensitivity. Digital simulation and experimental results are given to validate the fuzzy controller tuning in a laboratory nonlinear servo system application.

It is envisioned that small cells are going to play an important role in future cellular networks. Due to limited coverage areas of small cells and increased user mobility, a proper analysis and evaluation of handoff traffic is of major importance. In this paper, we propose a novel teletraffic model for the analysis of handoff traffic in cellular CDMA networks. When the cell load is above a predefined threshold, we allow the handoff calls to reduce their bandwidth requirements in order to avoid blocking. Our model also realistically assumes a finite number of traffic sources in the cell and enables analytical determination of uplink blocking probabilities for new and handoff calls. To this end, the CDMA system has been described as a continuous-time Markov chain in order to derive an efficient recursive formula for the calculation of system state probabilities. The proposed analytical model has been validated through simulation experiments, which show good accuracy of the derived results.

In this paper we present improvements to the cost of quantum circuits implemented with 2n-lines circuit implementation. The 2n-line circuit implementation is intended for the linear nearest neighbor quantum circuits and implements any quantum circuits in such manner that they can be directly mapped to quantum implementations. In this paper we propose a replacement strategy for 2- and 3-qubit patterns detected on the control lines. It is demonstrated that application of this strategy leads to a considerable reduction of circuit cost.

We present first results from a study of the relationship between small-scale ionospheric irregularities observed by Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN) radars and large-scale density structures, such as the mid-latitude trough associated with subauroral polarization stream (SAPS) events. A focus is placed on mid-latitudes over North America where recent expansion of the SuperDARN network allows for comparison with total electron content (TEC) measurements from a dense network of ground-based GPS receivers. Numerical models show that gradients associated with the mid-latitude trough walls can produce small scale structures due to both the ion temperature gradient instability and gradient drift instability. However, previous studies of the gradient drift instability using high-latitude SuperDARN radars suggest that only sunward directed plasma density gradients at the duskside and dawnside ends of the trough present favorable conditions for the growth of decameter-scale field-aligned irregularities (FAIs). Recent campaigns by the Millstone Hill Incoherent Scatter Radar in support of the NASA Van Allen Probes mission provide crucial ion/electron velocity, temperature, and density measurements for the study of these instability processes. Specifically, we re-examine the gradient drift instability as a source of the small-scale FAIs regularly observed by SuperDARN radars in the mid-latitude ionosphere during geomagnetically disturbed conditions.

This work considers the problem of power minimization in translucent wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. Our objective is to minimize the energy expended in optical WDM networks by reducing the number of power consuming components such as regenerators, amplifiers, add/drop terminals, etc. In particular, an algorithm for solving the Energy-Aware Routing and Wavelength Assignment (EA-RWA) problem in translucent networks based on Simulating Annealing (SA) meta-heuristic algorithm is proposed. Numerical results show that energy-efficient regenerator placement combined with appropriate routing so as to switch off power consuming components can significantly reduce power consumption in the network.

The use of in-home and mobile sensing is likely to be a key component of future care and has recently been studied by many research groups world-wide. Researchers have shown that embedded sensors can be used for health assessment such as early illness detection and the management of chronic health conditions. However, research collaboration and data sharing have been hampered by disparate sets of sensors and data collection methods. To date, there have been no studies to investigate common measures that can be used across multiple sites with different types of sensors, which would facilitate large scale studies and reuse of existing datasets. In this paper, we propose a framework for harmonizing heterogeneous sensor data through an intermediate layer, the Conceptual Sensor, which maps physical measures to clinical space. Examples are included for sleep quality and ambulatory physical function.

The key success of a general election is determined by the ability of voter information management system (Sipendalih) in preserving the accuracy and validity of voter's data. Sipendalih was designed to accommodate eligible voters who live overseas to participate in general election through not only registering themselves as voters but also monitoring the whole process of general election. This study assesses Sipendalih effectiveness against several criteria such as information quality, system quality, trust factor, system ease of use, and user satisfaction towards intention to use. Survey design with questionnaire instruments is adopted targeting voters who lived in six states in Malaysia as our sample. A total of 116 voters participated in the survey study. The results revealed that information and system quality as well as system ease of use significantly influenced voter's intention to use Sipendalih.

The performance of multiuser dual-hop relaying over mixed radio frequency/free-space optical (RF/FSO) links is investigated. RF links are used for the simultaneous data transmission from m single-antenna sources to the relay, which is equipped with n ≥ m receive antennas and a photo-aperture transmitter. The relay operates under the decode-and-forward protocol and utilizes the popular ordered V-BLAST technique to successively decode each user's transmitted stream. A common norm-based ordering approach is adopted, where the streams are decoded in an ascending order. After the V-BLAST decoding, the relay retransmits the initial information to the destination, which is equipped with a photo-detector, via a point-to-point FSO link in m consecutive timeslots. Analytical expressions for the end-to-end outage probability and average symbol error probability of each user are derived. Some engineering insights are manifested, such as the diversity order, the impact of the pointing error displacement on the FSO link and the severity on the turbulence-induced channel fading.
