Parallel MCMC with generalized elliptical slice sampling

Probabilistic models are conceptually powerful tools for finding structure in data, but their practical effectiveness is often limited by our ability to perform inference in them. Exact inference is frequently intractable, so approximate inference is often performed using Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC). To achieve the best possible results from MCMC, we want to effciently simulate many steps of a rapidly mixing Markov chain which leaves the target distribution invariant. Of particular interest in this regard is how to take advantage of multi-core computing to speed up MCMC-based inference, both to improve mixing and to distribute the computational load. In this paper, we present a parallelizable Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for effciently sampling from continuous probability distributions that can take advantage of hundreds of cores. This method shares information between parallel Markov chains to build a scale-location mixture of Gaussians approximation to the density function of the target distribution. We combine this approximation with a recently developed method known as elliptical slice sampling to create a Markov chain with no step-size parameters that can mix rapidly without requiring gradient or curvature computations.

The effectiveness of a legged robot's gait is highly dependent on the ground cover of the terrain the robot is traversing. It is therefore advantageous for a legged robot to adapt its behaviour to suit the environment. In order to achieve this, the robot must be able to detect and classify the type of ground cover it is traversing. We present a novel approach for ground cover classification that utilises position measurements of the leg servos to estimate the errors between commanded and actual positions of each joint. This approach gives direct insight into how the robot is interacting with the terrain. These position sensors are usually built into the actuators and therefore our approach has the advantage of not requiring any additional sensors. We employ a multi-class Support Vector Machine with a 660-dimensional feature space consisting of features in gait-phase and frequency domains. We implemented our algorithm in the Robot Operating System (ROS) framework for real time classification and also developed a MATLAB implementation for extensive offline testing. Both implementations perform multi-class ground cover classification with high accuracy across five classes.

SSQSA is a set of language independent tools whose main purpose is to analyze source code of software systems in order to evaluate their quality attributes. The aim of this paper is to present how a formal language that is not a programming language can be integrated into the front-end of the SSQSA framework. Namely, it is explained how the SSQSA front-end is extended to support OWL2 which is a domain-specific language for the description of ontological systems. Such extension of the SSQSA front-end represents a step towards the realization of a SSQSA back-end which will be able to compute a hybrid set of metrics that reflect different aspects of complexity of ontological descriptions. Context: Software documentation is an integral part of any software development process. However, software practitioners are often concerned about the lack of usage and quality of documentation in practice. Unfortunately, in many projects, practitioners find that software documentation artifacts are outdated, incomplete and sometimes not beneficial. Objective: Motivated by the needs of NovAtel Inc. (NovAtel), a world-leading company of GPS software systems, we propose in this paper an approach to analyze the usage and quality of software documentation in development and maintenance phases. Method: The approach incorporates inputs from automated analysis (e.g., mining of project's data) and also experts' opinion extracted from survey-based questionnaire. The approach has been designed based on the "action-research" approach and in close collaboration between industry and academia. Results: To evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of the proposed approach, we have applied it in an industrial setting and results are presented in this paper. One of the results is that, in the context of our case-study, usage of documentation for an implementation purpose is higher than the usage for maintenance purposes. Conclusion: It is concluded that the usage of documentation differs for various purposes and it depends on the type of the information needs as well as the task to be completed (e.g. development and maintenance). In addition, we identify the most important and relevant quality attributes which are critical to improving documentation quality. Copyright 2013 ACM.

The structure and content of XML schemas, important and widely used document definitions, has a significant influence on the quality of XML data and XML technologies in general, therefore the quality of XML Schemas and accurate assessment of the quality is a fundamental research challenge in all fields of XML application. A good quality estimation of an XML schema can directly and indirectly lead to a higher efficiency of its usage, simplification of information solutions, efficient maintenance, and higher quality of data and business processes. This paper addresses challenges in measuring the level of XML schema quality by employing general software quality metrics;a set of holistically defined and document-oriented metrics is proposed. Proposed XML Schema quality metrics base on existing software metrics, adapted according to needs of XML schemas, addressing it mostly from a structural perspective. This paper presents alternative technique for multi-pose face recognition using double stages classifications: shifting mean LDA (SMLDA) and fusion of scale invariant features (FSIF) based face descriptor. The first stage is employed to find the best class candidates that are similar to the query image the second stage (i.e FSIF) is employed to find the best matched class corresponding to the query image. The aims of this method are to solve the large face variability due to pose variations, to decrease the computational time of FSIF-based face recognition, and to avoid using the 3D scanner for estimating any pose variations of a face image without decreasing the recognition performance. The experimental results show that proposed method can overcome large face variability due to face pose variations, need short the computational time, and give better recognition rate than those of the previous method. In addition, the proposed method also provides better recognition rate than that of 3D based methods without requiring 3D scanner.

Scientific and engineering research is heavily dependent on effective development and use of software artifacts. Many of these artifacts are produced by the scientists themselves, rather than by trained software engineers. To address the challenges in this area, a research community often referred to as "Development of Scientific Software" has emerged in the last few decades. As this research area has matured, there has been a sharp increase in the number of papers and results made available, and it has thus become important to summarize and provide an overview about those studies. Through a systematic mapping and bibliometrics study, we have reviewed 130 papers in this area. We present the results of our study in this paper. Also we have made the mapping data available on an online repository which is planned to be updated on a regular basis. The results of our study seem to suggest that many software engineering techniques and activities are being used in the development of scientific software. However, there is still a need for further exploration of the usefulness of specific software engineering techniques (e.g., regarding software maintenance, evolution, refactoring, re(v)-engineering, process and project management) in the scientific context. It is hoped that this article will help (new) researchers get an overview of the research space and help them to understand the trends in the area. © 2013 World Scientific Publishing Company.

The relatively low price of devices that enable capture of 3D data such as Microsoft Kinect will certainly accelerate the development and popularization of a new generation of user interaction in the business application domain. Although the application interfaces and libraries that make it easier to communicate with these devices continue to be in the process of developing and maturing, they can still be used for the development of business solutions. In addition, gestures and sounds provide more natural and effective ways of human-computer interaction. In this paper we present an overview and a basic comparison of the available sensing devices together with the experience gained during the development of solution ADORA, which main purpose is to assist surgeons with the help of contactless interaction.
