In this work, we report experimental results regarding the recycling of optical pumps signal for energy conversion, namely optical pumps from Raman amplifiers and fiber optic parametric amplifiers. Therefore, we propose the usage of optical signals to power remotely located network elements. After propagation over 25 km single mode fiber an electrical power of 0.9 mW and 18.1 mW was attained for the Raman amplifier and fiber optic parametric amplifier, respectively.

This paper proposes an integrated approach for the identification of daily hand movements with a view to control prosthetic members. The raw EMG signal is decomposed into Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) with the use of Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD). A number of features are extracted in time and in frequency domain. Two different dimentionality methods are tested, namely the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique and the RELIEF feature selection algorithm. The outputs of the dimensionality reduction stage are then fed to a linear classifier to perform the detection task. The approach was tested on a group of young individuals and the results appear promising.

This paper introduces a new framework to perform handwritten password authentication as an Internet service based on the cloud computing technology. Using the proposed cloud-based authentication platform, we would be able to apply several advanced practical algorithms, such as k-nearest neighbor, and artificial neural network classifier used for large-scale character recognition. Context: The increase in the number of qualitative and mixed-methods research published in software engineering has created an opportunity for further knowledge generation through the synthesis of studies with similar aims. This is particularly true in the research on human aspects because the phenomena of interest are often better understood using qualitative research. However, the use of qualitative synthesis methods is not widespread and worked examples of their consistent application in software engineering are needed. Objective: To explore the use of meta-ethnography in the synthesis of empirical studies in software engineering through an example using studies about the relations between personality and software team processes. Methods: We applied the seven phases of meta-ethnography on a set of articles selected from a previously developed systematic review, to assess the appropriateness of meta-ethnography in this domain with respect to ease of use, and usefulness and reliability of results. Results: Common concepts were identified through reading and interpreting the studies. Then, second order translations were built and used to synthesize a model of the relationships between personality and software team processes. Conclusions: Meta-ethnography is adequate in the synthesis of empirical studies even in the context of mixed-methods studies. However, we believe that the method should not be used to synthesize studies that are too disparate to avoid the development of gross generalizations, which tend to be fruitless and are contrary to the central tenets of interpretive research.

This paper presents a pattern recognition approach for the identification of basic hand movements using surface electromyographic (EMG) data. The EMG signal is decomposed using Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) into Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMFs) and subsequently a feature extraction stage takes place. Various combinations of feature subsets are tested using a simple linear classifier for the detection task. Our results suggest that the use of EMD can increase the discrimination ability of the conventional feature sets extracted from the raw EMG signal.

This paper deals with a six legged robot path planning behavior learning based on human teaching. The six legged robot requires several capabilities such as perceiving, acting, communicating, and surviving. Furthermore, the six legged robot should learn various behaviors through the interaction with owner (human). This paper focuses on teaching path planning to the robot. Basically, the owner can teach the path planning by simple communication based on trial and error. Human teaches the path planning by using his hand. It will give an input of fuzzy controller used for the input and output movement of legged robot. Generally, legged robot will learn some pattern by a number of learning iteration. In every iterations the robot will have some punishment and reward coefficient of reinforcement learning used to generate better population of Genetic Algorithm until it can reach its minimum level of punishment. Experimental result shows that the legged robot can learn the path planning using the proposed method through the interaction with owner.

Ionosphere scintillation is caused by irregularities of electron density when radio wave passes through the ionosphere. It leads to random fluctuations in the amplitude and phase of satellite signals, degrading the performance of the satellites based navigation system such as the Global Positioning System (GPS) and other global navigation satellite systems (GNSS). Ionosphere scintillation results in increased navigation errors and may lead to loss-of-lock of satellite signals during strong events. Scintillations are more often observed in equatorial and high latitude areas. Hong Kong, located in a low latitude region (geographic 22.3°N, 114.2°E), frequently experiences serious ionospheric scintillations. This poses a threat to the reliability and accuracy of Hong Kong GNSS applications. In this study, two GNSS-based ionospheric scintillation receivers were used to monitor scintillations in south and north Hong Kong. The south station (HKHT) is equipped with a Septentrio PolaRxS Pro GNSS receiver while the north station (HKST) is equipped with a custom-modified GNSS receiver with a NovAtel OEMV board. Both stations were established in 2012 and are separated by 24 km. The HKHT station provides high-frequency scintillation data, including 50 Hz carrier phase measurements and 100 Hz outputs of correlators (in-phases and quadra-phases). The HKST station outputs 20 Hz carrier phase measurements and carrier-to-noise density (C/N0). In this paper, we first computed the scintillation indices S4 and sf, and then analyzed their temporal and spatial distributions over the two stations. The characteristics of amplitudes and phase scintillations at the south and north Hong Kong stations were compared and analyzed. Our observation results during 16-31 August 2012 showed that both amplitudes and phase scintillations were most observed during 20:00-3:00 LT (LT=UT+8 hours) in Hong Kong.
