The application areas for Unmanned Aircraft (UA) Systems (UAS) are constantly expanding. Aside from providing an attractive alternative in applications that are risky for humans, smaller UAS become highly attractive for applications where use of larger aircraft is not practical. This paper presents the UAS Collaboration Wireless Network (UAS-CWN), a secure and reliable UAS communication mesh-network. This solution is proposed for the circumstances where a large number of UAS are deployed to cooperatively accomplish a mission such as surveillance in hostile environments. The proposed UAS-CWN system provides high fault-tolerance through use of information dispersal algorithm and meanwhile reduces the risk of information exposure to the adversaries via security-enhancing mechanisms. Our evaluation shows promising results. Especially, a UAS-CWN with high security-level settings can withstand losing 30% of the total number of unmaned aircrafts while steadily achieving above 96% data recovery rate.

The added-value of search engines is, apparently, undoubted. Their rapid evolution over the last decade has transformed them into the most important source of information and knowledge. From the end user side, search engine success implies correct results in fast and accurate manner, while also ranking of search results on a given query has to be directly correlated to the user anticipated response. From the content providers' side (i.e. websites), better ranking in a search engine result set implies numerous advantages like visibility, visitability, and profit. This is the main reason for the flourishing of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) techniques, which aim towards restructuring or enriching website content, so that optimal ranking of websites in relation to search engine results is feasible. SEO techniques are becoming more and more sophisticated. Given that internet marketing is extensively applied, prior quality factors prove insufficient, by themselves, to boost ranking and the improvement of the quality of website content is also introduced. Current paper discusses such a SEO mechanism. Having identified that semantic analysis was not been widely applied in the field of SEO, a semantic approach is adopted, which employs Latent Dirichlet Allocation techniques coupled with Gibbs Sampling in order to analyze the results of search engines based on given keywords. Within the context of the paper, the developed SEO mechanism LDArank is presented, which evaluates query results through state-of-the-art SEO metrics, analyzes results' content and extracts new, optimized content.

The paper considers a two-tier wireless network structure, where the edge of a Macrocell is underlaid by a number of uniformly deployed femtocells, and studies the impact of interference to flow-level performance. A careful examination of the factors associated with interference and the use of appropriate modeling techniques from the theory of Processor Sharing systems give rise to a simple methodology for determining the values of important flow-level performance metrics. Two forms of interference are taken into account: cross-tier interference from the Macrocell to femtocells and co-tier interference between neighboring femtocells. The model developed by the paper is capable of capturing the combined impact of both these types. Numerical results investigate various tradeoffs between system parameters and indicate, among other findings, that in scenarios where the potential for cross-tier interference is more pronounced, increasing the number of femtocells above some threshold leads to performance degradation. The proposed methodology allows for a full quantification of such effects.

We study an 1-hop broadcast channel with two receivers. Due to overhearing channels, the receivers have side information which can be leveraged by interflow network coding techniques to provide throughput increase. In this setup, we consider two different control mechanisms, the deterministic system, where the contents of the receivers' buffers are announced to the coding node via overhearing reports and the stochastic system, where the coding node makes stochastic control decisions based on statistics and the performance is improved via NACK messages. We study the minimal evacuation times for the two systems and obtain analytical expressions of the throughput region for the deterministic and the code-constrained region for the stochastic. We show that maximum performance is achieved by simple XOR policies. For equal transmission rates r_1 = r_2, the two regions are equal. If r_1 ≠ r_2, we showcase the tradeoff between throughput and overhead.

This paper proposes an algorithm to solve the CEC2013 benchmark. The algorithm, namely Super-fit Multicriteria Adaptive Differential Evolution (SMADE), is a Memetic Computing approach based on the hybridization of two algorithmic schemes according to a super-fit memetic logic. More specifically, the Covariance Matrix Adaptive Evolution Strategy (CMAES), run at the beginning of the optimization process, is used to generate a solution with a high quality. This solution is then injected into the population of a modified Differential Evolution, namely Multicriteria Adaptive Differential Evolution (MADE). The improved solution is super-fit as it supposedly exhibits a performance a way higher than the other population individuals. The super-fit individual then leads the search of the MADE scheme towards the optimum. Unimodal or mildly multimodal problems, even when non-separable and ill-conditioned, tend to be solved during the early stages of the optimization by the CMAES. Highly multi-modal optimization problems are efficiently tackled by SMADE since the MADE algorithm (as well as other Differential Evolution schemes) appears to work very well when the search is led by a super-fit individual.

Denser transistor integration has enabled the fabrication of multi-tile chips, however, at the expense of higher susceptibility to defects and wear-out. Metal wires comprising the links of Networks-on-Chip (NoCs) are especially vulnerable to such defects, which can render some links disconnected. This paper presents a new fault-tolerant routing scheme to sustain on-chip communication. It uses a localized re-routing approach, whereby de-touring around faulty links - or complex regions of faults - is done locally at each node in a purely distributed and dynamic manner, while guaranteeing deadlock- and livelock-freedom. Results using synthetic traffic and real applications with full-system simulations prove its efficacy in addressing a large percentage of NoC links being faulty albeit at a gracefully degraded performance mode. © 2012 ACM.

While image texture is effective for use in pattern recognition and image analysis algorithms, textural features are time-consuming to calculate on standard CPUs. Therefore, we present novel implementations of textural feature algorithms on graphics processors (GPUs), enabling fast color and texture analysis. Since different textural feature calculations can exhibit diverse characteristics, we focus on using general and algorithm-specific techniques to exploit the inherent parallelism and computational power of a GPU. Common operations required during the textural feature pipeline range from streaming computations to recursive procedures, from arithmetically intensive transcendental functions to matrix operations. Some of these kernels are well-suited to GPUs, while others require considerable programming effort to fully exploit the memory hierarchy due to their memory usage patterns. In this paper, different strategies for computing textural features on GPUs are compared with counterpart implementations on multicore CPUs, and experimental results show GPU results reaching 500× speedup for certain operations. © The Author(s) 2012.

The present paper demonstrates through experiments that the performance of a teleoperated robot system is strongly influenced by the quality of the communication environment, which in our case was a wireless LAN (WLAN). We analyzed the path following capability of a human operator in the case of a teleoperated robot, with haptic feedback. We investigated the influence of external WLAN traffic over the precision of robot tracking. The paper presents both the design of the bilateral teleoperation system for mobile robots and the experimental methodology for performance evaluation of teleoperation systems in open wireless networks.
