Entering the 21st century, the aging process and increasing chronic diseases in Taiwan society have become more prevalent. To deal with the problem, we develop a ubiquitous healthcare (u-Health) system platform that integrates wireless telecommunication, sensor network, and information technology to take care of patients having chronic diseases. The u-Health system provides not only telecare at home setting, but also a health community network which can further integrate medical care and life care and emphasize on patent humanity and dignity. For this purpose, a holistic u-Health system focusing on the physiological, psychosocial, arts, recreational, and even spiritual aspects of patients was implemented for people living in the community. In this study, we applied our community based u-Health system to the current and retired employees of National Taiwan University (NTU) who had at least one of the following chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes mellitus and obesity, and required long term follow up and treatment. A community medical group (CMG) which is formed with family doctors from the Family Medicine Department of NTU Hospital, the Yung-Ho Branch of Cardinal Tien Hospital, NTU Health Center, and several other local clinics in Taipei City was in charge of the medical care along with a dedicated case managing nurse for the medical care at outpatient clinics, home telecare and 24-hour health consultation. Using this integrated community-based system is expected to provide a comprehensive and ubiquitous healthcare and eventually improve the quality of care by increasing compliance and reducing the complications of chronic diseases. © 2009 IEEE.

Phasor field waves: A statistical treatment for the case of a partially coherent optical carrier

This paper presents a statistical treatment of phasor fields (P-fields) – a wave-like quantity denoting the slow temporal variations in time-averaged irradiance (which was recently introduced to model and describe non-line-of-sight (NLoS) imaging as well as imaging through diffuse or scattering apertures) – and quantifies the magnitude of a spurious signal which emerges due to a partial spatial coherence of the underlying optical carrier. This spurious signal is not described by the Huygens-like P-field imaging integral which assumes optical incoherence as a necessary condition to describe P-field imaging completely (as was shown by Reza et al. [1–3]). In this paper, we estimate the relationship between the expected magnitude of this spurious signal and the degree of partial roughness within the P-field imaging system. The treatment allows us to determine the accuracy of the estimate provided by the P-field integral for varying degrees of partial coherence and allows to define a P-field signal-to-noise ratio as a figure-of-merit for the case of a partially coherent optical carrier. The study of partial coherence also enables to better relate aperture roughness to P-field noise. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

On the generalization of stochastic gradient descent with momentum

While momentum-based accelerated variants of stochastic gradient descent (SGD) are widely used when training machine learning models, there is little theoretical understanding on the generalization error of such methods. In this work, we first show that there exists a convex loss function for which the stability gap for multiple epochs of SGD with standard heavy-ball momentum (SGDM) becomes unbounded. Then, for smooth Lipschitz loss functions, we analyze a profiles momentum-based update rule, i.e., SGD with early momentum (SGDEM) under a broad range of step-sizes, and show that it can train machine learning models for multiple epochs with a guarantee for generalization. Finally, for the special case of strongly convex loss functions, we find a range of momentum such that multiple epochs of standard SGDM, as a special form of SGDEM, also generalizes. Extending our results on generalization, we also develop an upper bound on the expected true risk, in terms of the number of training steps, sample size, and momentum. Our experimental evaluations verify the consistency between the numerical results and our theoretical bounds. SGDEM improves the generalization error of SGDM when training ResNet-18 on ImageNet in practical distributed settings.

Quality constitutes the cutting-edge of contemporary industry, much more sharpened with the emergence of Industry 4.0. Yet, the assurance of delivering high-quality products remains a challenging problem that requires cautious controls and timely actions through the entire phases of the production cycle. To that end, zero-defect manufacturing (ZDM) has given prominence to a comprehensive methodology that ensures quality control and defects eradication at every phase of the procedure, prioritizing the continuous supervision of each distinctive component to satisfy the corresponding quality assurance standards. Continuous supervision and detection of possible flaws are subjective to exploiting high-tech sensors for high-precision monitoring and assessment. Considering the above, adopting active vision technology can further enhance the promising capabilities of ZDM. The paper highlights the active vision's benefits to the ZDM strategy and introduces a practical framework for applying such technology through the different stages. Innovations and challenges that have to be taken into consideration are also discussed.

The problem of artifacts in whole slide image acquisition, prevalent in both clinical workflows and research-oriented settings, necessitates human intervention and re-scanning. Overcoming this challenge requires developing quality control algorithms, that are hindered by the limited availability of relevant annotated data in histopathology. The manual annotation of ground-truth for artifact detection methods is expensive and time-consuming. This work addresses the issue by proposing a method dedicated to augmenting whole slide images with artifacts. The tool seamlessly generates and blends artifacts from an external library to a given histopathology dataset. The augmented datasets are then utilized to train artifact classification methods. The evaluation shows their usefulness in classification of the artifacts, where they show an improvement from 0.10 to 0.01 AUROC depending on the artifact type. The framework, model, weights, and ground-truth annotations are freely released to facilitate open science and reproducible research. © 2024, CC BY.

Achieving fast, precise, and scalable fault localization has long been a highly desired feature in all-optical mesh networks. Monitoring tree (m-tree) is an interesting method that has been introduced as the most general monitoring structure for achieving unambiguous failure localization (UFL). Ideally, with J m-trees one can monitor up to 2 J -1 links when a single failure has to be located. Such a logarithmic behavior has also been observed in numerous case studies of real life network topologies. It is expected that the m-tree framework will lead to a highly scalable link failure monitoring mechanism for not only all-optical mesh networks, but any possible future information system with mesh topologies, such as all-optical mesh networks, touch panels, quantum computing, and VLSI. It is an important task to investigate the extent such an optimal logarithmic behavior may hold, in particular in practically relevant network topologies. As an endeavor toward this goal, the paper investigates the problem by identifying essentially tight logarithmic bounds for two dimensional lattice networks. Experiments are conducted to show the feasibility and performance of the proposed constructions.

In this paper, two approaches to utilizing contextual information in semantic image analysis are presented and comparatively evaluated. Both approaches make use of spatial context in the form of fuzzy directional relations. The first one is based on a Genetic Algorithm (GA), which is employed in order to decide upon the optimal semantic image interpretation by treating semantic image analysis as a global optimization problem. On the other hand, the second method follows a Binary Integer Programming (BIP) technique for estimating the optimal solution. Both spatial context techniques are evaluated with several different combinations of classifiers and low-level features, in order to demonstrate the improvements attained using spatial context in a number of different image analysis schemes.

Concurrent with the rise of real-time wireless systems enabled by the Internet of Things, the age of information (AoI) has been widely perceived as a crucial destination-centric performance metric to quantify the timeliness of data delivery. This paper deals with the analysis of information freshness in a multi-source M/G/1 queueing system with utilization of idle server time, referred to as server vacation, in an effective manner. In particular, the status update packets in our model are generated independently by a finite set of source nodes and according to a Poisson process, while their service time follows a general random variable. Using stochastic decomposition and the Laplace-Stieltjes transform, we derive the average AoI (AAoI) expression for the multi-source M/G/1 queueing model with generally-distributed vacation time in closed form. Our numerical simulations validate the accuracy of the derived AAoI expression and assess the impact of different parameters on the system performance.
