In the realm of coal mining, safety and risk management stand as paramount challenges, underscored by the inherent perils like structural failures and the presence of hazardous gases such as methane. Recognizing the urgent need for enhanced safety measures, this paper introduces a novel system seamlessly integrating structural integrity assessment with gas concentration analysis to ascertain the warning level in coal mines. The core objective revolves around fortifying safety protocols by implementing effective monitoring and early warning systems. This multifaceted approach encompasses addressing potential hazards, preventing accidents, reducing environmental impact, and, above all, safeguarding the well-being of mine workers. The system, intertwining structural monitoring and gas concentration measurement, dynamically generates real-time risk assessments and alerts based on the integrated data. Against the backdrop of these intricate challenges, the research strives to propel substantial advancements in mining safety practices. By harnessing the capabilities of camera imagery, machine learning, and gas sensors, it envisions a future marked by elevated safety standards and a noteworthy reduction in incidents within coal mines.

Fast non-iterative algorithm for 3D point-cloud holography

Recently developed iterative and deep learning-based approaches to computer-generated holography (CGH) have been shown to achieve high-quality photorealistic 3D images with spatial light modulators. However, such approaches remain overly cumbersome for patterning sparse collections of target points across a photoresponsive volume in applications including biological microscopy and material processing. Specifically, in addition to requiring heavy computation that cannot accommodate real-time operation in mobile or hardware-light settings, existing sampling-dependent 3D CGH methods preclude the ability to place target points with arbitrary precision, limiting accessible depths to a handful of planes. Accordingly, we present a non-iterative point cloud holography algorithm that employs fast deterministic calculations in order to efficiently allocate patches of SLM pixels to different target points in the 3D volume and spread the patterning of all points across multiple time frames. Compared to a matched-performance implementation of the iterative Gerchberg-Saxton algorithm, our algorithm’s relative computation speed advantage was found to increase with SLM pixel count, reaching >100,000x at 512 × 512 array format. © 2023 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

We report a compact modeling framework based on the Grove-Frohman (GF) model and artificial neural networks (ANNs) for emerging gate-all-around (GAA) MOSFETs. The framework consists of two ANNs;the first ANN constructed with the drain current model not only can capture the main trend of device I - V characteristics but also can predict its variation even when the amount of training data for the ANN is insufficient or outside the range of applied biases. The second one is then designed to improve the model accuracy by further minimizing the errors between the target and the model outputs. We implement the proposed framework to accurately model emerging GAA nanosheet (NS) MOSFETs and complementary FETs (CFETs) without suffering from divergent issues in circuit simulation. In addition, nonphysical behaviors, such as nonzero current at zero bias, do not occur in the modeling framework. Compared to recently reported machine-learning (ML) models, our approach can achieve a similar level of model accuracy with merely 20% amount of the training data. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

With the rapid growth of video data, video summarization is a promising approach to shorten a lengthy video into a compact version. Although supervised summarization approaches have achieved state-of-the-art performance, they require frame-level annotated labels. Such an annotation process is time-consuming and tedious. In this article, we propose a novel deep summarization framework named Deep Semantic and Attentive Network for Video Summarization (DSAVS) that can select the most semantically representative summary by minimizing the distance between video representation and text representation without any frame-level labels. Another challenge associated with video summarization tasks mainly originates from the difficulty of considering temporal information over a long time. Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) performs well for temporal dependencies modeling but does not work well with long video clips. Therefore, we introduce a self-attention mechanism into our summarization framework to capture the long-range temporal dependencies among the frames. Extensive experiments on two popular benchmark datasets, i.e., SumMe and TVSum, show that our proposed framework outperforms other state-of-the-art unsupervised approaches and even most supervised methods. © 2022 Association for Computing Machinery.

Stroke is a neurological syndrome that may cause severe cognitive and motor impairments for survival. Alternative rehabilitation techniques have been developed to recover lower-limb movements and gait of post-stroke patients, such as Motor Imagery (MI)-based Brain-computer Interfaces (BCIs), Virtual Reality (VR), and robotic devices. Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive technique to stimulate the brain and modulate cortical excitability. This study aims to analyze the short-term effects of tDCS compared to sham stimulation before a lower-limb MI-BCI pedaling training (through a robotic monocycle) task in a patient with subacute stroke. We studied a post-stroke patient with 2 months of ischemic stroke and right hemiparesis who was submitted to the following tasks: active pedaling, sham tDCS and MI-BCI, and tDCS and MI-BCI. Nickel is typically used as one of the main components in electrical contact devices or *** oxide(NiO)is usually formed on the surfaces of electrodes and can negatively impact system performance by introducing electrical contact *** thermal,electrical,and transport properties of NiO,as a Mott insulator or a p-type semiconductor,can be altered by operating and environmental conditions such as temperature and stress/strain by *** this study,we inves-tigate the fundamental material properties of NiO through the first-principle ***,we obtain and compare the lattice parameter,magnetic moment,and electronic structure for NiO via the WIEN2K simulations with four different poten-tials(i.e.,GGA,GGA+U,LSDA,and LSDA+U).Then,using the WIEN2K simulation results with LSDA+U potential that produces a highly accurate bandgap for NiO,we calculate the electrical conductivity and electrical part of the thermal conductivity of nickel and NiO as a function of temperature and carrier concentration through the BoltzTraP *** simulation results revealed that the electrical conductivity relative to the relaxation time for NiO increases with the carrier concentration,while it shows a slightly decreasing trend with temperature under a fixed carrier *** contrast,the electrical part of the thermal conductivity shows an increasing trend considering carrier concentration and temperature.

The increased use of small satellites in commercial, defense, and research industries reinforces the need for efficient and reliable communication subsystems. Compact, space rated, communication subsystems present their own unique design challenges. This paper presents the design and implementation of a lower power, low form factor communication subsystem for a IP pico-satellite, developed by a team of undergraduate students from Wentworth Institute of Technology. This effort aims to contribute to the growing field of small satellite communications by providing a robust and efficient solution.

The aim of this paper is to provide an advanced WSN solution for power-sustainable energy management and efficient communication, integrating the latest developments from the SEMS. This work will focus on the research effort directed at improving M2M communication and integrating WSNs with wireless mobile networks, as well as addressing PAPR, energy consumption, and scalability. It now applies to real-time monitoring of power usage, room temperature, and lighting by integrating renewable resources of energy with sophisticated algorithms and sensor networks. Key results include a 16.6% saving in energy consumptions, 78% in system delay improvements, and the implementation of solar energy systems that have realized significant cost savings while assuring environmental sustainability. This work proves the ability of the approach through wide simulations and real-world deployments for scalable and eco-friendly energy management solutions. Besides, this work is closely related to worldwide goals for reduction of carbon footprints and efficient resource utilization.

Estimating the homography between two images is crucial for mid- or high-level vision tasks, such as image stitching and fusion. However, using supervised learning methods is often challenging or costly due to the difficulty of collecting ground-truth data. In response, unsupervised learning approaches have emerged. Most early methods, though, assume that the given image pairs are from the same camera or have minor lighting differences. Consequently, while these methods perform effectively under such conditions, they generally fail when input image pairs come from different domains, referred to as multimodal image pairs. To address these limitations, we propose AltO, an unsupervised learning framework for estimating homography in multimodal image pairs. Our method employs a two-phase alternating optimization framework, similar to Expectation-Maximization (EM), where one phase reduces the geometry gap and the other addresses the modality gap. To handle these gaps, we use Barlow Twins loss for the modality gap and propose an extended version, Geometry Barlow Twins, for the geometry gap. As a result, we demonstrate that our method, AltO, can be trained on multimodal datasets without any ground-truth data. It not only outperforms other unsupervised methods but is also compatible with various architectures of homography estimators. In this study, we report the process variation effect (PVE) including the work function fluctuation (WKF) on the DC/AC characteristic fluctuation of stacked gate-all-around silicon complementary field-effect transistors (CFETs). The PVE affects characteristic fluctuation significantly;in particular, for the variability of off-state current. Owing to the bottom channel of a fin-type, the P-FET suffers from the worst off-state current fluctuation (more than 200% variation) compared to the N-FET. The device variability induced by the WKF is marginal because of amorphous-type metal grains. As input features to an artificial neural network (ANN) model, low and high work function values, as well as parameters of PVE that have prevalent effects on CEFT transfer characteristics are further considered and modeled. The estimated values of R2-score prove that the ANN model properly grasps information from the dataset successfully;thus, it can be used to model emerging CFETs for circuit simulation. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
