The popularity of quadrotor Unmanned Aerial Vehicles(UAVs)stems from their simple propulsion systems and structural ***,their complex and nonlinear dynamic behavior presents a significant challenge for control,necessitating sophisticated algorithms to ensure stability and accuracy in *** strategies have been explored by researchers and control engineers,with learning-based methods like reinforcement learning,deep learning,and neural networks showing promise in enhancing the robustness and adaptability of quadrotor control *** paper investigates a Reinforcement Learning(RL)approach for both high and low-level quadrotor control systems,focusing on attitude stabilization and position tracking tasks.A novel reward function and actor-critic network structures are designed to stimulate high-order observable states,improving the agent’s understanding of the quadrotor’s dynamics and environmental *** address the challenge of RL hyper-parameter tuning,a new framework is introduced that combines Simulated Annealing(SA)with a reinforcement learning algorithm,specifically Simulated Annealing-Twin Delayed Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient(SA-TD3).This approach is evaluated for path-following and stabilization tasks through comparative assessments with two commonly used control methods:Backstepping and Sliding Mode Control(SMC).While the implementation of the well-trained agents exhibited unexpected behavior during real-world testing,a reduced neural network used for altitude control was successfully implemented on a Parrot Mambo mini *** results showcase the potential of the proposed SA-TD3 framework for real-world applications,demonstrating improved stability and precision across various test scenarios and highlighting its feasibility for practical deployment.

There is a concern about the learner effectiveness in video lecture. The ability of learners to effectively engage is influenced by the time they can sustain their attention. However, learners watching video lectures often struggle to maintain their attention after a certain period of time. This is primarily because video lectures are created without taking into consideration the time learners can sustain their attention. This study aims to investigate what kind of stimuli could be presented to learners during video lectures to help them sustain their attention. This study designs five experimental stimuli to be presented during video lectures playback and measures the time learners sustain attention for each stimulus. The experimental results show that when video lecture learners are received simultaneous visual stimulus in the form of dynamic text and auditory stimulus in the form of voiceover, the time they sustain attention in video lectures is the longest. This suggests that presenting dynamic text and voiceover simultaneously during video lectures can be the most effective strategy to sustain learners’ attention. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Parallel I/O is a critical technique for moving data between compute and storage subsystems of supercomputers. With massive amounts of data produced or consumed by compute nodes, high-performant parallel I/O is essential. I/O benchmarks play an important role in this process;however, there is a scarcity of I/O benchmarks representative of current workloads on HPC systems. Toward creating representative I/O kernels from real-world applications, we have created h5bench, a set of I/O kernels that exercise hierarchical data format version 5 (HDF5) I/O on parallel file systems in numerous dimensions. Our focus on HDF5 is due to the parallel I/O library's heavy usage in various scientific applications running on supercomputing systems. The various tests benchmarked in the h5bench suite include I/O operations (read and write), data locality (arrays of basic data types and arrays of structures), array dimensionality (one-dimensional arrays, two-dimensional meshes, three-dimensional cubes), I/O modes (synchronous and asynchronous). In this paper, we present the observed performance of h5bench executed along several of these dimensions on existing supercomputers (Cori and Summit) and pre-exascale platforms (Perlmutter, Theta, and Polaris). h5bench measurements can be used to identify performance bottlenecks and their root causes and evaluate I/O optimizations. As the I/O patterns of h5bench are diverse and capture the I/O behaviors of various HPC applications, this study will be helpful to the broader supercomputing and I/O community. © 2024 Lawrence Berkeley National laboratory, The HDF Group, UChicago Argonne, LLC and The Authors. This study examines the relationship between Quality of Service (QoS) and security in Wi-Fi networks. Using a detailed dataset consisting of QoS metrics of file transfers under various security configurations, we analyze the impact of these settings on network performance. Our findings provide a quantification to accurately show that different encryption protocols, such as TKIP and CCMP, significantly affect QoS, with disabling security generally improving performance. The study provides a framework for optimizing security settings to enhance both security and QoS in future wireless networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Detecting network anomalies is critical for wireless network security and reliability. Traditional AI methods often require substantial computational resources, particularly when deployed on cloud servers, leading to increased network load and latency. In contrast, deploying AI models directly on end devices enables real-time data processing at the source, facilitating faster anomaly detection and mitigation. We propose a lightweight hierarchical AI model where initial inferences are made by a simple model and outputs confidence scores. Using a modified TOPSIS-based method, we determine an optimal confidence score threshold. Inferences below this threshold are forwarded to a more complex model for accurate analysis, reducing overall computational demands while maintaining high detection performance. Our approach is tested on a 5 G network dataset, demonstrating competitive performance compared to other anomaly detection models. © 2024 IEEE.

In several Machine Learning (ML) clustering and dimensionality reduction approaches, such as nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF), RESCAL, and K-Means clustering, users must select a hyper-parameter k to define the number of clusters or components that yield an ideal separation of samples or clean clusters. This selection, while difficult, is crucial to avoid overfitting or underfitting the data. Several ML applications use scoring methods (e.g., Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores) to evaluate the cluster pattern stability for a specific k. The score is calculated for different trials over a range of k, and the ideal k is heuristically selected as the value before the model starts overfitting, indicated by a drop or increase in the score resembling an elbow curve plot. While the grid-search method can be used to accurately find a good k value, visiting a range of k can become time-consuming and computationally resource-intensive. In this paper, we introduce the Binary Bleed method based on binary search, which significantly reduces the k search space for these grid-search ML algorithms by truncating the target k values from the search space using a heuristic with thresholding over the scores. Binary Bleed is designed to work with single-node serial, single-node multi-processing, and distributed computing resources. In our experiments, we demonstrate the reduced search space gain over a naive sequential search of the ideal k and the accuracy of the Binary Bleed in identifying the correct k for NMFk, K-Means pyDNMFk, and pyDRESCALk with Silhouette and Davies Boulding scores. We make our implementation of Binary Bleed for the NMF algorithm available on GitHub. © 2024 IEEE.

Speed sensor faults are very common in electric vehicle (EV) applications, often disrupting system performance due to the reliance on speed sensor data by the electric drives. Consequently, fault-tolerant control approaches require robust observer structures capable of functioning effectively during faults, swiftly identifying and reconfiguring failures. Thus, this paper presents a novel fault-tolerant control design leveraging a synergetic observer (SO) to substitute the speed sensor in the event of fault. Comparative analysis with a super-twisting sliding mode observer (ST-SMO) highlights the proposed observer's superior performance in terms of tracking accuracy and ripple reduction. The presented simulation results demonstrate promising performance of the proposed observer for fault-tolerant control in EV applications. © 2024 IEEE.

The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses. © 1998-2012 IEEE.
