Atmosphere-Dependent Pyrolytic Transformability of Glass Fiber/Epoxy Resin Composites in Waste Wind Turbine Blades

The wind power industry is grappling with the sustainable disposal of a growing volume of retired wind turbine blades. While these blades contain recyclable composite materials (e.g., glass fiber/epoxy resin), effective recycling methods remain limited. This study characterized the influence of the N2 and CO2 atmospheres on the thermal decomposition of glass fiber/epoxy resin composite through thermogravimetry (TG), TG-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (TG-FTIR), and pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). Both atmospheres exhibited similar mass loss profiles, with devolatilization occurring between 237.80−578.30 °C (N2) and 236.62−553.32 °C (CO2). CO2 inhibited pyrolytic gas formation compared with N2. Pyrolytic oils identified primarily consisted of phenols, alcohols/ethers, and aliphatics, with compositional changes with 400 °C, 500 °C, and 600 °C. At the elevated temperatures, phenolic compounds underwent deoxidation to form aromatic structures, while pyrolytic carbon surface fragments contracted and melted. Not only were residual mass, decomposition rate, and five volatile products jointly optimized, but also their sensitivities to the temperature and atmosphere were quantified using artificial neural networks. This study provides a theoretical and scalable basis for developing sustainable strategies of thermal circularity for waste wind turbine blades. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Image-guided minimally invasive robotic surgery is commonly employed for tasks such as needle biopsies or localized therapies. However, the nonlinear deformation of various tissue types presents difficulties for surgeons in achieving precise needle tip placement, particularly when relying on low-fidelity biopsy imaging systems. In this paper, we introduce a method to classify needle biopsy interventions and identify tissue types based on a comprehensive needle-tissue contact model that incorporates both position and force parameters. We trained a transformer model using a comprehensive dataset collected from a formerly developed robotics platform, which consists of synthetic and porcine tissue from various locations (liver, kidney, heart, belly, hock) marked with interaction phases (pre-puncture, puncture, post-puncture, neutral). This model achieves a significant classification accuracy of 0.93. Our demonstrated method can assist surgeons in identifying transitions to different tissues, aiding surgeons with tissue awareness. © 2024, CC BY.

As one of the six usage scenarios of the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication system, integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has garnered considerable attention, and numerous studies have been conducted on radio-frequency (RF)-ISAC. Benefitting from the communication and sensing capabilities of an optical system, free space optical (FSO)-ISAC becomes a potential complement to RF-ISAC. In this paper, a direct-current-biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) scheme is proposed for FSO-ISAC. To derive the spectral efficiency for communication and the Fisher information for sensing as performance metrics, we model the clipping noise of DCO-OFDM as additive colored Gaussian noise to obtain the expression of the signal-to-noise ratio. Based on the derived performance metrics, joint power allocation problems are formulated for both communication-centric and sensing-centric scenarios. In addition, the non-convex joint optimization problems are decomposed into sub-problems for DC bias and subcarriers, which can be solved by block coordinate descent algorithms. Furthermore, numerical simulations demonstrate the proposed algorithms and reveal the trade-off between communication and sensing functionalities of the OFDM-based FSO-ISAC system. The response to an applied electric field in the qT=1/2 subphase of the MC881-MC452 binary mixture system is studied by using thick homeotropically aligned cells. In the ordinary antiferroelectric SmCA* and 1/2 (sub)phases, some nonplanar asymmetric distortions in the antiferroelectric unit cell structure produce induced polarization in the applied field direction, starts to unwind the helix from the beginning, and tends to align the averaged tilt plane direction parallel to the applied field. In the 1/2 subphase under consideration, however, the helix resists being deformed at the beginning and then the thresholdlike steep increase of birefringence Δn occurs in the transition from 1/2 to unwound SmC* at a field of less than 0.5 V/µm; we conclude that the thermal fluctuations play an important role in promoting the director flip-flopping in a single layer under the applied field and bring about additional induced polarization, which counteracts the aforementioned ordinary induced one and prevents the helix from unwinding. This suggests that the Langevin-like director reorientation is the mechanism of the V-shaped switching which was actually observed in the thin films of Mitsui mixture [Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 015701 (2001)] and must have been used in prototyped thresholdless antiferroelectric liquid-crystal displays.

Performance Analysis of MIMO-HARQ Assisted V2V Communications With Keyhole Effect

Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications under dense urban environments usually experience severe keyhole fading effect especially for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channels, which degrades the capacity and outage performance due to the rank deficiency. To avoid these, the integration of MIMO and hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) is proposed to assist V2V communications in this paper. By using the methods of integral transforms, the outage probabilities are derived in closed-form for different HARQ-assisted schemes, including Type I-HARQ, HARQ with chase combining (HARQ-CC), and HARQ with incremental redundancy (HARQ-IR). With the results, meaningful insights are gained by conducting the asymptotic outage analysis. Specifically, it is revealed that full time diversity order can be achieved, while full spatial diversity order is unreachable as compared to MIMO-HARQ systems without keyhole effect. Moreover, we prove that the asymptotic outage probability is a monotonically increasing and convex function of the transmission rate. More importantly, although HARQ-IR performs better than HARQ-CC owing to its higher coding complexity, this advantage becomes negligible in the large-scale array regime. Finally, the numerical results are verified by Monte-Carlo simulations along with some in-depth discussions. © 2022, CC BY.

Addition of trace Zn can impose notable effect on the deformation behavior of Mg-Gd-Y-Zr alloy, while the underlying mechanisms have not been revealed. In the present work, Mg-8.5Gd-2.5Y-0.3Zr (wt%) (0Zn) and Mg-8.5Gd-2.5Y-0.5Zn-0.3Zr (wt%) (0.5Zn) alloys were fabricated by casting and extrusion, to obtain a bimodal microstructure containing fine DRXed grains and coarse unDRXed grains. The as-extruded 0Zn and 0.5Zn alloys were studied by in-situ synchrotron diffraction under uniaxial tension and compression to clarify the effect of trace Zn on the deformation mechanisms. It is found that both alloys exhibit stress relaxation in the basal slip favored grains under both tension and compression, and adding trace Zn highly enhances the stress relaxation. Furthermore, the addition of Zn stimulates the occurrence of discontinuous yielding which is in connection with the stress relaxation, resulting from the interaction between basal dislocations and solute atmospheres. The tension-compression yielding symmetry of the alloy is improved by adding Zn, which is mainly attributed to the suppression effect of γ’ phases and Gd/Y-Zn dimers on tensile twinning. Finally, the addition of Zn can promote the tensile and compressive strength, owing to the strength enhancement of the relevant deformation modes and the increase of the fraction of unDRXed regions. © 2023, The Authors. COVID-19, corona virus disease, has been ravaging the world since the last quarter of 2019. To address this threat, the World Health Organization (WHO) has established a list of priority medical equipment that must be used by hospitals and clinics. These equipments are in fact non-linear harmonic-producing loads that have a detrimental effect on the devices and degrade the quality of the power supply. In this paper a parallel active filter: a neuronal harmonic compensation strategy based on plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) connected to the charging stations in the parking lot of hospitals and clinics and artificial intelligence is proposed in order to improve the quality of power supply thus protecting medical equipment in order to save lives. This strategy will be simulated in MATLAB and the results will be presented as evidence of its effectiveness.

In recent years, the exponential proliferation of smart devices with their intelligent applications poses severe challenges on conventional cellular networks. Such challenges can be potentially overcome by integrating communication, computing, caching, and control (i4C) technologies. In this survey, we first give a snapshot of different aspects of the i4C, comprising background, motivation, leading technological enablers, potential applications, and use cases. Next, we describe different models of communication, computing, caching, and control (4C) to lay the foundation of the integration approach. We review current state-of-the-art research efforts related to the i4C, focusing on recent trends of both conventional and artificial intelligence (AI)-based integration approaches. We also highlight the need for intelligence in resources integration. Then, we discuss the integration of sensing and communication (ISAC) and classify the integration approaches into various classes. Finally, we propose open challenges and present future research directions for beyond 5G networks, such as 6G. Copyright © 2022, The Authors. All rights reserved.
