Learning Probabilistic Coordinate Fields for Robust Correspondences

We introduce Probabilistic Coordinate Fields (PCFs), a novel geometric-invariant coordinate representation for image correspondence problems. In contrast to standard Cartesian coordinates, PCFs encode coordinates in correspondence-specific barycentric coordinate systems (BCS) with affine invariance. To know when and where to trust the encoded coordinates, we implement PCFs in a probabilistic network termed PCF-Net, which parameterizes the distribution of coordinate fields as Gaussian mixture models. By jointly optimizing coordinate fields and their confidence conditioned on dense flows, PCF-Net can work with various feature descriptors when quantifying the reliability of PCFs by confidence maps. An interesting observation of this work is that the learned confidence map converges to geometrically coherent and semantically consistent regions, which facilitates robust coordinate representation. By delivering the confident coordinates to keypoint/feature descriptors, we show that PCF-Net can be used as a plug-in to existing correspondence-dependent approaches. Extensive experiments on both indoor and outdoor datasets suggest that accurate geometric invariant coordinates help to achieve the state of the art in several correspondence problems, such as sparse feature matching, dense image registration, camera pose estimation, and consistency filtering. Further, the interpretable confidence map predicted by PCF-Net can also be leveraged to other novel applications from texture transfer to multi-homography classification. © 1979-2012 IEEE.

Despite substantial efforts, the maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of red, green, and blue quantum dots remains close to 25%, limited by the outcoupling efficiency of specific device optical structures. Further improvements have primarily focused on optimizing light management. In this study, we employed rodshaped nanocrystals instead of sphere-like quantum dots as the light-emitting layer. The theoretical device outcoupling efficiency significantly increased to nearly 41% due to the intrinsic horizontal dipole alignment within the quantum rod film, nearly doubling the efficiency compared to quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QDLEDs). As a result, we achieved record-high EQEs of 14.1% for green quantum rod light-emitting diodes, with maximum brightness exceeding 150,000 cd/m2, respectively. Our research demonstrates the immense potential of QRLEDs for display and lighting applications, paving a new way for the commercialization of nanocrystal particles. © 2024, John Wiley and Sons Inc. In this work, we propose a small-size and low-cost phase shifter based on defective microstrip structure (DMS) technique, with a modified reconfigurable unit cell (MRDMS) for WLAN applications at 5.2 GHz. The phase shifter is made up of an MRDMS unit, created by etching slots on a simple microstrip line with an outline of three bridges. To further increase the phase shift, a T-shaped slot is introduced in the central bridge and PIN diodes on the edges of the outer bridges are used. By switching the diodes on and off, the MRDMS unit cell is capable of operating in a variety of different modes to give a phase shift of 37.71° at 5.2 GHz. Additionally, MRDMS unit cells are cascaded for higher phase shift as required. Cascaded two- and four-cell phase shifters were designed and simulated in HFSS and a parametric study on various parameters was conducted to show the detailed operating properties of the proposed phase shifter. Compared to previously reported research, the present study shows that two cascaded phase shifters introduce 75.08° phase shifts and 151.75°, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the maximum phase shift obtained by a phase shifter based on MRDMS. © 2023 IEEE.

Although the building of quantum computers has kept making rapid progress in recent years, noise is still the main challenge for any application to leverage the power of quantum computing. Existing works addressing noise in quantum devices proposed noise reduction when deploying a quantum algorithm to a specified quantum computer. The reproducibility issue of quantum algorithms has been raised since the noise levels vary on different quantum computers. Importantly, existing works largely ignore the fact that the noise of quantum devices varies as time goes by. Therefore, reproducing the results on the same hardware will even become a problem. We analyze the reproducibility of quantum machine learning (QML) algorithms based on daily model training and execution data collection. Our analysis shows a correlation between our QML models' test accuracy and quantum computer hardware's calibration features. We also demonstrate that noisy simulators for quantum computers are not a reliable tool for quantum machine learning applications. © 2023 IEEE.

Usually, the resolution loss is serious in light field display due to the spatial multiplexing of several neighboring pixels to display images from different directions. With the limitation in the resolution of the flat panel display, the light field 3D display shows insufficient display size, image depth, or resolution. This article utilized the FLC with a fast response at 2 kHz and the optimized charge compensation method to achieve a high refresh time multiplexing method, which can effectively increase the display resolution by up to 32 times and is very promising for light field 3D displays in the future. © 2024, John Wiley and Sons Inc. The pervasive presence of IoT sensing devices combined with advances in cloud-based services has made historical- and forecast weather data services widely available for use in smart software systems. The contribution of this paper is the design, performance evaluation, and validation of a software implementation of model-based dynamic fire risk prediction for wooden homes using local weather data. A key feature of the implementation is that the software architecture has been designed to support the use of different underlying cloud-based weather data services, and the integration as a service in third-party smart systems embedding fire risk predictions. The performed evaluation shows that the implementation is efficient, as weather data can be retrieved, preprocessed and fire risk predictions computed within seconds using only in the order of Kb's of memory;and accurate considering our sets of data, as the fire risks computed by the implementation have been validated against a set of in-situ measurements. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. Technology has influenced the hospitality industry, and the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a focus for sustainability, revenue growth, and problem-solving. This systematic review examined the opportunities and challenges of implementing IoT technology for a sustainable hospitality. Through a thorough analysis of 28 studies, we found that IoT technology has great potential to address sustainability issues in the hospitality industry. However, there are still significant challenges that need to be addressed for the successful implementation of IoT technology in the hospitality industry. Overall, this study highlights the potential of IoT technology to revolutionize the hospitality industry and make it more sustainable. Further research is needed to address the challenges of IoT implementation in the hospitality industry and to evaluate the effectiveness of IoT technology in achieving sustainability goals. © 2023 IEEE.
