When non-Hermitian eigenvalue surfaces form intertwined Riemann surfaces, the corresponding non-Hermitian singularities, also know as exceptional points (EPs), are located at the center of this specific topology. Various experimental platforms have recently been presented in which interesting new physics associated with these branch point singularities can be explored. In particular, it has been shown that dynamically encircling EPs may lead to a so-called chiral state transfer. The chirality in this context refers to the fact that in such an encircling protocol, the final state at the end of an EP -enclosing loop solely depends on the encircling direction (clockwise or counterclockwise), but not on the initial state. Such a chiral behavior is intrinsically linked to the state vector deviating from adiabatically following the system's eigenstates associated with the eigenvalue surfaces; instead, due to the non-Hermitian violation of the adiabatic theorem, non-adiabatic jumps let the system undergo transitions from lossy eigenstates to eigenstates with gain. Here, we present two experiments that implement concepts that go beyond this established paradigm.

We report on electrical gating of the charge-density-wave phases and current in h-BN capped three-terminal 1T-TaS2 heterostructure devices. It is demonstrated that the application of a gate bias can shift the source-drain current-voltage hysteresis associated with the transition between the nearly commensurate and incommensurate charge-density wave phases. The evolution of the hysteresis and the presence of abrupt spikes in the current while sweeping the gate voltage suggest that the effect is electrical rather than self-heating. We attribute the gating to an electric-field effect on the commensurate charge-density-wave domains in the atomic planes near the gate dielectric. The transition between the nearly commensurate and incommensurate charge-density-wave phases can be induced by both the source-drain current and the electrostatic gate. Since the charge-density-wave phases are persistent in 1T-TaS2 at room temperature, one can envision memory applications of such devices when scaled down to the dimensions of individual commensurate domains and few-atomic plane thicknesses. SSD-KD: A Self-supervised Diverse Knowledge Distillation Method for Lightweight Skin Lesion Classification Using Dermoscopic Images

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of malignancy, affecting a large population and causing a heavy economic burdenworldwide. Over the last fewyears, computer-aided diagnosis has been rapidly developed and make great progress in healthcare and medical practices due to the advances in artificial intelligence, particularly with the adoption of convolutional neural networks. However, most studies in skin cancer detection keep pursuing high prediction accuracies without considering the limitation of computing resources on portable devices. In this case, the knowledge distillation (KD) method has been proven as an efficient tool to help improve the adaptability of lightweight models under limited resources, meanwhile keeping a high-level representation capability. To bridge the gap, this study specifically proposes a novel method, termed SSD-KD, that unifies diverse knowledge into a generic KD framework for skin diseases classification. Our method models an intra-instance relational feature representation and integrates it with existing KD research. A dual relational knowledge distillation architecture is self-supervisedly trained while the weighted softened outputs are also exploited to enable the student model to capture richer knowledge from the teacher model. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we conduct experiments on ISIC 2019, a large-scale open-accessed benchmark of skin diseases dermoscopic images. Experiments show that our distilled lightweight model can achieve an accuracy as high as 85% for the classification tasks of 8 different skin diseases with minimal parameters and computing requirements. Ablation studies confirm the effectiveness of our intra- and inter-instance relational knowledge integration strategy. Compared with state-of-the-art knowledge distillation techniques, the proposed method demonstrates improved performances. In the context of achieving Good Corporate Governance (GCG) in hospitals, among others, it is carried out with control and supervision, including in the case of hospital facility maintenance installations. Besides that, the hospital needs to improve its services. The asset reporting system is one of the high needs in this field, so it requires a solution that can deal with existing problems. Unfortunately, the current reporting system so far is more likely to be conventional, such as by telephone. This study proposes a new solution to the hospital facility maintenance reporting process, namely by utilising smartphone-based applications that directly connected to the server. So, the information distributed to the competent parties. This solution can speed up the reporting process and actions. Also, save the historical equipment that is available from each service room - the results of this study used as a hospital facility maintenance reporting system. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Magneto-optical Spectroscopy with RAMBO: A Table-Top 30 T Magnet

Optically probing materials in high magnetic fields can provide enlightening insight into field-modified electronic states and phases, while optically driving materials in high magnetic fields can induce novel nonequilibrium many-body dynamics of spin and charge carriers. While there are high-field magnets compatible with standard optical spectroscopy methods, they are generally bulky and have limited optical access, which prohibit performing state-of-the-art ultrafast and/or nonlinear optical experiments. The Rice Advanced Magnet with Broadband Optics (RAMBO), a unique 30-T pulsed mini-coil magnet system with direct optical access, has enabled previously challenging experiments using femtosecond optical pulses, including time-domain terahertz spectroscopy, in cutting-edge materials placed in strong magnetic fields. Here, we review recent experimental advances made possible by the first-generation RAMBO setup. After summarizing technological aspects of combining optical spectroscopic techniques with the mini-coil magnet, we describe results of magneto-optical studies of a wide variety of materials, providing new insight into the states and dynamics of four types of quasiparticles in solids – excitons, plasmons, magnons, and phonons – in high magnetic fields. Purpose: Cells are building blocks for human physiology;consequently, understanding the way cells communicate, co-locate, and interrelate is essential to furthering our understanding of how the body functions in both health and disease. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) is the standard stain used in histological analysis of tissues. Microscope slides of H&E-stained tissues are widely available in both clinical and research settings. While H&E is ubiquitous and reveals tissue microanatomy, the classification and tracking of cell subtypes often requires expert knowledge and the use of specialized stains, such as immunofluorescence staining. To reduce both the manual annotation burden and reliance on specialized staining technologies, artificial intelligence has been proposed for the automatic classification of cell types on H&E slides. For example, the recent Colon Nucleus Identification and Classification (CoNIC) Challenge focused on labeling 6 cell types on imaging of H&E stains from the human colon. However, this is a very small fraction of the number of potential cell subtypes within the intestines. Specifically, the CoNIC Challenge was unable to classify epithelial subtypes (progenitor, enteroendocrine, goblet), lymphocyte subtypes (B, helper T, cytotoxic T), and connective subtypes (fibroblasts). To approach this problem, we propose to use inter-modality learning to label previously un-labelable cell types on H&E. Approach: We take advantage of the cell classification information inherent in whole slide images (WSIs) of multiplexed immunofluorescence (MxIF) histology to create cell level annotations for 14 subclasses. We performed style transfer on the same MxIF tissues to synthesize realistic virtual H&E which we paired with the MxIF-derived cell subclassification labels. We evaluated the efficacy of using a supervised learning scheme where the input was realistic-quality virtual H&E and the labels were MxIF-derived cell subclasses. We assessed our model on a testing

Topological insulators are materials with an insulating bulk interior while maintaining gapless boundary states against back scattering. Bi2Se3 is a prototypical topological insulator with a Dirac-cone surface state around Γ. Here, we present a controlled methodology to gradually remove Se atoms from the surface Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se quintuple layers, eventually forming bilayer-Bi on top of the quintuple bulk. Our method allows us to track the topological surface state and confirm its robustness throughout the surface modification. Importantly, we report a relocation of the topological Dirac cone in both real space and momentum space, as the top surface layer transitions from quintuple Se-Bi-Se-Bi-Se to bilayer-Bi. Additionally, charge transfer among different surface layers is identified. Our study provides a precise method to manipulate surface configurations, allowing for the fine-tuning of the topological surface states in Bi2Se3, which represents a significant advancement towards nano-engineering of topological states. Understanding the way cells communicate, co-locate, and interrelate is essential to understanding human physiology. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining is ubiquitously available both for clinical studies and research. The Colon Nucleus Identification and Classification (CoNIC) Challenge has recently innovated on robust artificial intelligence labeling of six cell types on H&E stains of the colon. However, this is a very small fraction of the number of potential cell classification types. Specifically, the CoNIC Challenge is unable to classify epithelial subtypes (progenitor, endocrine, goblet), lymphocyte subtypes (B, helper T, cytotoxic T), or connective subtypes (fibroblasts, stromal). In this paper, we propose to use inter-modality learning to label previously un-labelable cell types on virtual H&E. We leveraged multiplexed immunofluorescence (MxIF) histology imaging to identify 14 subclasses of cell types. We performed style transfer to synthesize virtual H&E from MxIF and transferred the higher density labels from MxIF to these virtual H&E images. We then evaluated the efficacy of learning in this approach. We identified helper T and progenitor nuclei with positive predictive values of 0.34 ± 0.15 (prevalence 0.03 ± 0.01) and 0.47 ± 0.1 (prevalence 0.07 ± 0.02) respectively on virtual H&E.
