Wiener filters applied to channel-summed RF echo data was approximated to the ideal Bayesian beamforming strategy for imaging breast lesion features. They can be computed in real-time and perform well provided the system response matrix is circulant. Real systems exhibit depth-varying impulse responses, so performance degrades for some essential diagnostic features. This paper describes the effects of circulant assumption (CA) violations on the robustness of human visual discrimination efficiency, and the effects of regularization, as applied to beamformers for breast sonography. The Wiener filter is then adapted for shift-varying system responses. The trade off between performance and computation time for each approach is studied using simulations and phantoms scanned with a commercial system.

The clinical data stored in the health information system can be categorized as two types including structuralized data and non-structuralized ones. In the paper, a data extraction system is developed to assist data retrieval from the non-structuralized textual clinical documents such as radiology reports, pathology reports, etc. The system provides keyword-based and semantic-driven data matching methodology to extract the specific information from the textual clinical documents. The matching methodology provides the capabilities to recognize the selected keywords and the related semantics in the documents. Through the extraction verification interface, clinicians can extract and verify the matched information semi-automatically. The extracted data can be filled into predefined case-oriented templates. The structuralized data can be stored back into the clinical data warehouse for further analyzing. Moreover, the case-oriented templates can support collecting corresponding extracted data for various researches.

Replying to N. K. Logothetis 468, 10.1038/nature09532 (2010)This is a welcome opportunity to discuss ofMRI, a technology for testing the causal and global impact of defined cell populations in vivo. The accompanying Comment reviews well-known neuroanatomy, but does seem, in its entirety, to be founded on a suggestion that, after experiments were conducted to drive a defined circuit element and measure resulting BOLD signals, we concluded that no other contributory circuit element was recruited by the driven population. This was not the case, however, as correctly understood by others in the fMRI community and as explained in the paper (for example, 'contributions from additional cells and processes downstream of the defined optically triggered population are expected and indeed represent an important aspect of this approach'). Moreover, the complexity of the brain dictates that such possible contributory mechanisms are more numerous than listed in the Comment, including many other circuit and feedback mechanisms and classes of cells within neural circuitry. As was discussed, this is one of the most important and useful aspects of the ofMRI approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
