The internet has become an integral part of our life, we connect daily for informational, social, entertainment and even work and economic purposes. Therefore, it is completely normal to connect to the internet;But it is not only people, also these everyday objects or things in our environment who connect to the network to take advantage of its benefits. This next stage in the evolution of the internet, in which connectivity extends to the objects which surround us, is known as the Internet of Things. Sensors, Machines, Devices, Wearables are part of the Internet of Things and these can be identified to be recognized and interact without the need for a human being. With the Internet of Things, the connection extends to any type of object. All these interconnected devices and people produce an immense amount of data, when analyzed, they become a tool that allows organizations to make wise decisions in real time by having information on various market situations and ensuring a better understanding of behavior and consumer preferences. One of the disciplines of Artificial Intelligence responsible for analyzing this large amount of data is Machine Learning, whose sole purpose is to improve the Decision-Making process. To understand the relationship between Internet of Things, application of Machine Learning and the Decision Making process, a bibliometric analysis is carried out from 2013 to 2020 to know its evolution, trends, research areas, authors and other aspects using Scopus. © 2020 IEEE.

It is well accepted that an outward Marangoni convection from a low surface tension region will make the surface depressed. Here, we report that this established perception is only valid for thin liquid films. Using surface laser heating, we show that in deep liquids a laser beam actually pulls up the fluid above the free surface generating fountains with different shapes. Whereas with decreasing liquid depth a transition from fountain to indentation with fountain-in-indentation is observed. Further, high-speed imaging reveals a transient surface process before steady elevation is formed, and this dynamic deformation is subsequently utilized to resonantly excite giant surface waves by a modulated laser beam. Computational fluid dynamics models reveal the underlying flow patterns and quantify the depth-dependent and time-resolved surface deformations. Our discoveries and techniques have upended the century-old perception and opened up a new regime of interdisciplinary research and applications of Marangoni-induced interface phenomena and optocapillary fluidic surfaces - the control of fluids with light. © 2021, CC BY.

On hallucinations in tomographic image reconstruction

Tomographic image reconstruction is generally an ill-posed linear inverse problem. Such ill-posed inverse problems are typically regularized using prior knowledge of the soughtafter object property. Recently, deep neural networks have been actively investigated for regularizing image reconstruction problems by learning a prior for the object properties from training images. However, an analysis of the prior information learned by these deep networks and their ability to generalize to data that may lie outside the training distribution is still being explored. An inaccurate prior might lead to false structures being hallucinated in the reconstructed image and that is a cause for serious concern in medical imaging. In this work, we propose to illustrate the effect of the prior imposed by a reconstruction method by decomposing the image estimate into generalized measurement and null components. The concept of a hallucination map is introduced for the general purpose of understanding the effect of the prior in regularized reconstruction methods. Numerical studies are conducted corresponding to a stylized tomographic imaging modality. A co-simulation may comprise several heterogeneous federates with diverse spatial and temporal execution characteristics. In an iterative time-stepped simulation, a federation exhibits the Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) computation paradigm in which all federates perform local operations and synchronize with their peers before proceeding to the next round of computation. In this context, the lowest performing (i.e., slowest) federate dictates the progression of the federation logical time. One challenge in co-simulation is performance profiling for individual federates and entire federations. The computational resource assignment to the federates can have a large impact on federation performance. Furthermore, a federation may comprise federates located on different physical machines as is the case for cloud and edge computing environments. As such, distributed profiling and resource assignment to the federation is a major challenge for operationalizing the co-simulation execution at scale. This paper presents the Execution Performance Profiling and Optimization (EXPPO) methodology, which addresses these challenges by using execution performance profiling at each simulation execution step and for every federate in a federation. EXPPO uses profiling to learn performance models for each federate, and uses these models in its federation resource recommendation tool to solve an optimization problem that improves the execution performance of the co-simulation. Using an experimental testbed, the efficacy of EXPPO is validated to show the benefits of performance profiling and resource assignment in improving the execution runtimes of co-simulations while also minimizing the execution cost.

With increasing dependence on precision electronic equipment, self-protection is becoming essential. The protection circuits commonly used before were fuses and circuit breakers which, however, they are not enough for the current need of high-speed protection circuits and automated engineering logic. In this paper, we develop a new ultrahigh-speed protection circuit, which is over exceeded 20 times faster than traditional circuits and has the ability to self-recover when any failure occurs. With the new circuit developed, it is not necessary to do manual restart and will meet the future needs of protection for electronic precision equipment. This design provides greater convenience and reliability for the unmanned equipment for the future. © 2019 IEEE.

We show in ZnTe that the 2LO to 1LO resonant Raman intensity ratio, a measure of electron-phonon coupling (EPC), exhibits a much larger intrinsic value than that previously reported and minimal change from bulk to 30 nm nanowires. However, the ratio can be tuned extrinsically over one order in magnitude controllably either during or after growth, and thus, allows for the programing of EPC or quantum information in nanoscale devices. This work helps to understand a matter of controversy in the literature for more than three decades, regarding the EPC size dependence in nanostructures, and provides unambiguous experimental results for validating EPC theories with reduced dimensionality.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Computed Tomography (CT) are widely used for screening, diagnosis and imageguided therapeutics. Due to physical, technical and economical limitations, it is impossible for MRI and CT scanners to target ideal image resolution. Given the nominal imaging performance, how to improve image resolution has been a hot topic, and referred to as super-resolution research. As a promising method for super-resolution, over recent years deep learning has shown a great potential especially in deblurring natural images. In this paper, based on the neural network model termed as GAN-CIRCLE (Constrained by the Identical, Residual, Cycle Learning Ensemble), we adapt this neural network for achieving super-resolution for both MRI and CT. Soft robotics is a field of robotic system design characterized by materials and structures that exhibit large-scale deformation, high compliance, and rich multifunctionality. The incorporation of soft and deformable structures endows soft robotic systems with the compliance and resiliency that makes them well-adapted for unstructured and dynamic environments. While actuation mechanisms for soft robots vary widely, soft electrostatic transducers such as dielectric elastomer actuators (DEAs) and hydraulically amplified self-healing electrostatic (HASEL) actuators have demonstrated promise due to their muscle-like performance and capacitive self-sensing capabilities. Despite previous efforts to implement self-sensing in electrostatic transducers by overlaying sinusoidal low-voltage signals, these designs still require sensing high-voltage signals, requiring bulky components that prevent integration with miniature, untethered soft robots. We present a circuit design that eliminates the need for any high-voltage sensing components, thereby facilitating the design of simple, low cost circuits using off-the-shelf components. Using this circuit, we perform simultaneous sensing and actuation for a range of electrostatic transducers including circular DEAs and HASEL actuators and demonstrate accurate estimated displacements with errors under 4%. We further develop this circuit into a compact and portable system that couples HV actuation, sensing, and computation as a prototype towards untethered, multifunctional soft robotic systems. Finally, we demonstrate the capabilities of our self-sensing design through feedback-control of a robotic arm powered by Peano-HASEL actuators. Copyright © 2020, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Charge-pumping with finger capacitance in a custom electrostatic energy harvesting ASIC

We present an integrated circuit capable of scavenging energy from repetitive changes in finger touch capacitance. A finger tapping on this ASIC generates a capacitive change of approximately 770pF. These changes feed into a charge-pump circuit which stores 320pJ of energy on a 1nF storage capacitor. We present measurement results and simulations that demonstrate operation. As a proof-of-concept, we also demonstrate that the harvested energy can power a ring oscillator which outputs a series of chirps with frequencies ranging from 80Hz to 30kHz as the storage capacitor voltage charges and discharges.
