To date, cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of global death. The Electrocardiogram (ECG) is the most widely adopted clinical tool that measures the electrical activities of the heart from the body surface. However, heart rhythm irregularities cannot always be detected on a standard resting ECG machine, since they may not occur during an individual's recording session. Common Holter-based portable solutions that record ECG for up to 24 to 48 hours lack the capability to provide real-time feedback. In this research, we seek to establish a cell phone-based real-time monitoring technology for CVD, capable of performing continuous on-line ECG processing, generating a personalized cardiac health summary report in layman's language, automatically detecting and classifying abnormal CVD conditions, all in real time. Specifically, we developed an adaptive artificial neural network (ANN)-based machine learning technique, combining both an individual's cardiac characteristics and information from clinical ECG databases, to train the cell phone to learn to adapt to its user's physiological conditions to achieve better ECG feature extraction and more accurate CVD classification on cell phones. ©2009 IEEE.

Change in cell stiffness is a characteristic of several blood cell diseases, such as sickle cell anemia1, malaria2, and leukemia3. In humans, the spleen acts like a filter to remove these more rigid cells by pushing blood through slits between endothelial cells and removing cells that cannot pass. In this work, we create a microfluidic device that mimics the architecture of the spleen to achieve continuous-flow fractionation of cells based on their rigidity. We demonstrate successful operation of this device by separating malaria-infected from normal, uninfected red blood cells (RBCs). Applications include disease diagnosis and sample preparation for downstream analysis. © 2009 CBMS.

Microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition was used to fabricate nanodiamond films. Nitrogen incorporation was achieved by the introduction of N2 gas along with H2 and CH4 gases in the plasma. SEM studies revealed a change in the microstructure with increase in the N2 flow rate, transitioning from a 'ridge'-like surface morphology to a more 'cauliflower'-like structure. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis showed a general decrease in the sp3 hybridized carbon content while the sp hybridized carbon content increased with N2 flow rate (up to 28.7%) after which it declines. Deconvolution of the C1s XPS spectra indicates incorporation of nitrogen and existence of carbon-nitrogen bonding. Raman spectroscopy shows diamond peak at 1332 cm-1 and the graphite peak, which increases in intensity and shifts towards lower wave number with increase in the N2 flow rate. A diffuse band at 1140 cm -1 indicates presence of a nanocrystalline phase in the films. ©The Electrochemical Society.

This paper describes a low-cost, successful program to help retain female engineering Technology students with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of female graduates of our engineering Technology programs. This program was started in 2003. The programming initially focused on academic support in the form of tutoring, formation of study groups and reimbursement for academic laboratory kits. This program did improve retention, but a survey of our students found that they also desired social support and opportunities to serve the community. Since the addition of programming involving social support and community building, retention of women students in the engineering Technology programs has improved by an average of 6% per year. In addition to improved retention, the number of students receiving a D, F or Withdrawing from the core first- and second-year courses in these programs has dropped by over 75%. © American Society for engineering Education, 2009.

We demonstrate a high sensitivity, high throughput microfabricated cell sorting device with the integrated piezoelectric actuator and optofluidic waveguide on a chip. For automated sorting, field-programmable-gate-array (FPGA) embedded real time control loop system is built. The sorting is performed under high flow rate (~10 cm/sec), and the sorting system can achieve a high throughput (> 1kHz) with high purity. Moreover, to enhance its sensitivity, Teflon AF coated liquid core waveguide (LCW) structure is demonstrated. Teflon AF has a lower refractive index (n=1.31) than water (n=1.33) and forms the cladding layer of the LCW. Incident light is confined and guided along the Teflon AF coated fluidic channel, and interact with samples flowing along the same channel. This enables flexible device design and gives high sensitivity to the fluorescence detection system. The preliminary results demonstrate sorting fluorescent beads at a sorting efficiency of ~70% with no false sorting. ©2009 IEEE.

This paper discusses our ongoing efforts on developing, and conducting, senior design projects that involve undergraduate students working together on entrepreneurial, innovative projects. The students are from multiple universities, some of which are abroad. The goal is to emulate the main elements of global engineering teams that develop complex, multidisciplinary designs while targeting market-related constraints, such as price, reliability, size and ease-of-use. This paper discusses the goals and organization of the global student teams, and presents our experience in working with such teams. © 2009 IEEE.

Fluidic lenses with tunable focal distances were experimented in a human eye model as intraocular lenses (IOLs). Fluidic IOL shows superior performance to fixed or optic-shift accommodating IOLs because of their much wider accommodation range. Our results demonstrate that fluidic IOL can achieve an accommodation range of eight diopters, equivalent to the performance of young adults. Finite-element analysis shows that the required force for the fluidic IOL to achieve the desired amount of accommodation is comparable to the force generated from ciliary muscles of human eyes, as an initial indication that an implanted fluidic IOL may be controllable by eye muscles. © 2009 IEEE.

Magnetic resonance diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is being widely used to reconstruct brain white matter (WM) fiber tracts. For further characterization of the tracts, the fibers with similar courses often need to be grouped into a fiber bundle that corresponds to certain underlying WM anatomic structure. In addition, the alignments of fibers from different studies are often desirable for bundle comparisons and group analysis. In this work, a novel registration algorithm based on fiber-to-bundle matching was proposed to address the above two needs. Using an Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm, the proposed method is capable of estimating a Thin-Plate- Spline transformation that optimally aligns whole-brain target fiber sets with a reference bundle model. Based on the resulting transformations, the fibers from different target datasets can all be warped into the reference coordinate system for comparisons and group analysis. The fibers can be further automatically labeled according to their similarity to the reference model. The algorithm was evaluated with eight human brain DTI data volumes acquired in vivo at 3T. After registration, the warped target bundles exhibit good similarity to the reference bundles. Quantitative experiments further demonstrated that the detected target bundles agree with ground truth obtained by manual segmentation at a sub-voxel accuracy. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical engineering.
