Dynamics of COVID-19 Misinformation: An Analysis of Conspiracy Theories, Fake Remedies, and False Reports

This paper makes four scientific contributions to the area of misinformation detection and analysis on digital platforms, with a specific focus on investigating how conspiracy theories, fake remedies, and false reports emerge, propagate, and shape public perceptions in the context of COVID-19. A dataset of 5,614 posts on the internet that contained misinformation about COVID-19 was used for this study. These posts were published in 2020 on 427 online sources (such as social media platforms, news channels, and online blogs) from 193 countries and in 49 languages. First, this paper presents a structured, three-tier analytical framework that investigates how multiple motives - including fear, politics, and profit - can lead to a misleading claim. Second, it emphasizes the importance of narrative structures, systematically identifying and quantifying the thematic elements that drive conspiracy theories, fake remedies, and false reports. Third, it presents a comprehensive analysis of different sources of misinformation, highlighting the varied roles played by individuals, state-based organizations, media outlets, and other sources. Finally, it discusses multiple potential implications of these findings for public policy and health communication, illustrating how insights gained from motive, narrative, and source analyses can guide more targeted interventions in the context of misinformation detection on digital platforms. © 2025, CC BY.

This study presents a novel approach to human keypoint detection in low-resolution thermal images using transfer learning techniques. We introduce the first application of the Timed Up and Go (TUG) test in thermal image computer vision, establishing a new paradigm for mobility assessment. Our method leverages a MobileNetV3-Small encoder and a ViTPose decoder, trained using a composite loss function that balances latent representation alignment and heatmap accuracy. The model was evaluated using the Object Keypoint Similarity (OKS) metric from the COCO Keypoint Detection Challenge. The proposed model achieves better performance with AP, AP50, and AP75 scores of 0.861, 0.942, and 0.887 respectively, outperforming traditional supervised learning approaches like Mask R-CNN and ViTPose-Base. Moreover, our model demonstrates superior computational efficiency in terms of parameter count and FLOPS. Autonomous take-off and landing capabilities are crucial in UAV vision-based missions, ensuring adaptive navigation, especially in challenging environments where realtime identification and interaction with a variety of landing platforms are required. In this context, this paper presents a servo-visual controller that uses pattern detection and color segmentation techniques to identify take-off/landing platforms and estimate their current orientation. The proposed system was subjected to experimental validation with four platforms positioned in different orientations, heights, and positions, demonstrating its versatility in various conditions. Our study addresses the Flying Robots Trial League challenge, which emulates mapping and inspection tasks in offshore platforms.

Unbiased Parameter Estimation for Bayesian Inverse Problems

In this paper we consider the estimation of unknown parameters in Bayesian inverse problems. In most cases of practical interest, there are several barriers to performing such estimation, This includes a numerical approximation of a solution of a differential equation and, even if exact solutions are available, an analytical intractability of the marginal likelihood and its associated gradient, which is used for parameter estimation. The focus of this article is to deliver unbiased estimates of the unknown parameters, that is, stochastic estimators that, in expectation, are equal to the maximizer of the marginal likelihood, and possess no numerical approximation error. Based upon the ideas of [4] we develop a new approach for unbiased parameter estimation for Bayesian inverse problems. We prove unbiasedness and establish numerically that the associated estimation procedure is faster than the current state-of-the-art methodology for this problem. In the context of 5G, infrastructure sharing has been identified as a potential solution to reduce the investment costs of cellular networks. In particular, it can help low-income regions build 5G networks more affordably and further bridge the digital divide. There are two main kinds of infrastructure sharing: passive sharing (i.e., site sharing) and active sharing (i.e., access sharing), which require mobile network operators (MNOs) to share their non-electronic elements or electronic elements, respectively. Because co-construction and sharing can achieve broader coverage with lower investment, through percolation theory, we investigate how different sharing strategies can deliver large-scale continuous services. First, we examine the percolation characteristics in signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) coverage graphs and the necessary conditions for percolation. Second, we propose an ‘average coverage radius’ to approximate the SINR graph with a low base station (BS) density based on the Gilbert disk model. Finally, we estimate the critical conditions of BS densities of MNOs for different sharing strategies and compare the percolation probabilities under different infrastructure sharing strategies. © 1967-2012 IEEE.

The recent proliferation of hyper-realistic deepfake videos has drawn attention to the threat of audio and visual forgeries. Most previous studies on detecting artificial intelligence-generated fake videos only utilize visual modality or audio modality. While some methods exploit audio and visual modalities to detect forged videos, they have not been comprehensively evaluated on multimodal datasets of deepfake videos involving acoustic and visual manipulations, and are mostly based on convolutional neural networks with low detection accuracy. Considering that human cognition instinctively integrates multisensory information including audio and visual cues to perceive and interpret content and the success of transformer in various fields, this study introduces the audio-visual transformer-based ensemble network (AVTENet). This innovative framework tackles the complexities of deepfake technology by integrating both acoustic and visual manipulations to enhance the accuracy of video forgery detection. Specifically, the proposed model integrates several purely transformer-based variants that capture video, audio, and audio-visual salient cues to reach a consensus in prediction. For evaluation, we use the recently released benchmark multimodal audio-video FakeAVCeleb dataset. For a detailed analysis, we evaluate AVTENet, its variants, and several existing methods on multiple test sets of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed model outperforms all existing methods and achieves state-of-the-art performance on Testset-I and Testset-II of the FakeAVCeleb dataset. We also compare AVTENet against humans in detecting video forgery. The results show that AVTENet significantly outperforms humans. © 2016 IEEE.

Metasurfaces have pioneered significant improvements in sensing technology by tailoring strong optical responses to weak signals. When designed with anisotropic subwavelength geometries, metasurfaces can tune responses to varying polarization states of light. Leveraging this to quantify structural alignment in fibrous materials unveils an alternative to destructive characterization methods. This work introduces metasurface-enhanced polarized light microscopy (Meta-PoL), which employs polarization-tunable, guided-mode-resonant colorimetric metasurfaces to characterize molecular and bulk alignment of poly(Ε-caprolactone) (PCL) nanofibers in a far-field configuration. PCL nanofibers drawn at 0%, 400%, and 900% ratios were interfaced with the studied metasurfaces. Metasurface resonances coinciding with the intrinsic drawn nanofiber resonances – confirmed by Stokes Polarimetry – produced the strongest colorimetric enhancement, resultant from alignment-specific nanofiber reflectivity. The enhancement degree corresponded with molecular and bulk alignments for each draw ratio, as measured through differential scanning calorimetry and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. Thus, Meta-PoL presents an all-optical, non-destructive, and quantitative measurement of nanofiber alignment. Copyright © 2025, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Multimodal image translation has found useful applications in solving several medical imaging problems. In this paper, we presented a systematic analysis of multimodal images and machine learning-based image translation from an information-theoretic perspective. Specifically, we analyzed the amount of mutual information that exists in some commonly used multimodal images. This analysis revealed varying structural correlation across modalities and tissue-dependence of mutual information. We also analyzed the amount of information transferred and gained in multimodal image translation and provided an upper bound on the information gain. Information-theoretic measures were also proposed to assess the effectiveness of an image translator, and the uncertainty associated with image translation. Numerical results were presented to demonstrate the information gain in practical multimodal image translation, and to validate the proposed upper bound on information gain and the translation error predictor. Finally, several potential applications of our analysis results were discussed, including the image denoising and reconstruction using side information generated by image translation. The findings from this study may prove useful for guiding the further development and application of multimodal image translation. © 1982-2012 IEEE.

Structured illumination microscopy (SIM) uses a set of images captured with different illumination patterns to computationally reconstruct resolution beyond the diffraction limit. Here, we propose an alternative approach using a single speckle illumination pattern and relying on inherent sample motion to encode the super-resolved information in multiple raw images. From a set of raw fluorescence images captured as the sample moves, we jointly estimate both the sample motion and the super-resolved image. We demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed method both in simulation and in experiment. © 2025, CC BY.
