Many patients with leukoaraiosis (LA) exhibit mild and difficult-to-detect symptoms in the early stages, and due to the lack of effective detection methods, the optimal timing for treatment is often missed. This not only makes later treatment more difficult but, in severe cases, can even lead to mild to severe dementia. Therefore, in addition to relying on radiologists to manually interpret magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, finding more effective detection methods has become extremely urgent. This study aimed to combine image processing and deep learning technologies to develop a model capable of accurately identifying and segmenting white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) to assist doctors in the early diagnosis of LA. We first performed efficient preprocessing on MR image slices from two different series and used the ResNet18 model to identify key slices containing WMHs, ultimately achieving precise segmentation of WMH areas with the U-Net model. This research focused on developing innovative preprocessing techniques, improving the accuracy by 12.3% with a limited dataset through preprocessing. Ultimately, the ResNet18 model achieved an F1 score of 0.829, while the U-Net model’s intersection over union (IoU) and Dice coefficient reached 0.750 and 0.857, respectively, showing the potential of this architecture. We propose improvements in the final chapter to construct a more comprehensive model. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

In recent years, many fields have expanded their research methods through the integration of artificial intelligence. In the current medical field, it is widely used in image recognition to diagnose patient symptoms, train clinical prediction models, and improve clinical workflow processes to avoid missing treatment opportunities. These methods have all achieved good results so far. Now, generative AI is also impacting the development of the medical field, not only generating prescriptions that match patient conditions but also being applied in generating medical images for data augmentation and simulating various pathological conditions, thereby aiding in training deep learning models. Stroke is a leading cause of death or disability, ranking as the second leading cause of death worldwide, next to cancer. If cancers were categorized individually, stroke would surpass all single diseases, making it a primary focus of research in brain disease treatment. There are already studies where generative AI has been used to create medical images, which are then manually evaluated by doctors to determine if they were generated by AI. In this project, we plan to generate CT images of strokes using generative AI and use a trained model (to diagnose stroke) to improve accuracy. Through this project, we hope to solve the problem of scarce stroke CT images while also providing support for training stroke-related models. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

Relying only on behaviors that emerge from simple responsive controllers; swarms of robots have been shown capable of autonomously aggregate themselves or objects into clusters without any form of communication. We push these controllers to the limit, requiring robots to sort themselves or objects into different clusters. Based on a responsive controller that maps the current reading of a line-of-sight sensor to a pair of speeds for the robots' differential wheels, we demonstrate how multiple tasks instances can be accomplished by a robotic swarm. Using the dividing rectangles approach and physics simulation, a training step optimizes the parameters of the controller guided by a fitness function. We conducted a series of systematic trials in physics-based simulation and evaluate the performance in terms of dispersion and the ratio of clustered robots/objects. Across 20 trials where 30 robots cluster themselves into 3 groups, an average of 99.83% of them were correctly clustered into their group after 300 s. Across 50 trials where 15 robots cluster 30 objects into 3 groups, an average of 61.20%, 82.87%, and 97.73% of objects were correctly clustered into their group after 600 s, 900 s, and 1800 s, respectively. The object cluster behavior scales well while the aggregation does not, the latter due to the requirement of control tuning based on the number of robots.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) often presents only mild symptoms in its early stages, and as there is no direct diagnostic method currently available, many patients are diagnosed only after the condition has worsened. Considering that magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can provide key information in the diagnosis of AD, but the condition may go undiagnosed under manual interpretation due to the subtleness of symptoms and the reliance on radiologists to interpret MRI images, this study aimed to develop an automated method for interpreting brain MR images, hoping to screen for potential AD patients. By combining image processing, the U-Net model, YOLOv8 model, various CNN model architectures, and ensemble data statistics, our method was able to identify features related to AD and predict whether a patient has the disease. Our method can process a complete set of MR images and automatically extract important slices for prediction, making it practical for medical applications. Furthermore, we tested the accuracy and reliability of the method with additional datasets. © 2024 Copyright ACM.

The rapid rise in usage of mobile devices have not shown any signs of flattening or slowing down. Some efforts in the standardization bodies are underway to define new ways to boost data rate, network capacity and lower the latency by enhancing existing 4G technologies and by incorporating new technologies in 5G. Since lower spectrum has fewer resources, the LTE of unlicensed spectrum LTE-U is being proposed to extend LTE to unlicensed spectrum. Streaming data traffic for licensed spectrum on LTE-U can improve the performance of the system significantly. In this paper LTE-U deployment by the LAA is implemented using the LBT mechanism on a flexible SDR testbed. © 2022 International Foundation for Telemetering. All rights reserved.

Depending on the relative rates of coupling and dissipation, a light-matter coupled system is either in the weak- or strong-coupling regime. Here, we present a unique system where the coupling rate continuously increases with an externally applied magnetic field while the dissipation rate remains constant, allowing us to monitor a weak-to-strong coupling transition as a function of magnetic field. We observed a Rabi splitting of a terahertz magnon mode in yttrium orthoferrite above a threshold magnetic field of ∼14 T. Based on a microscopic theoretical model, we show that with increasing magnetic field the magnons transition into magnon polaritons through an exceptional point, which will open up new opportunities for in situ control of non-Hermitian systems.

Learning to assemble geometric shapes into a larger target structure is a pivotal task in various practical applications. In this work, we tackle this problem by establishing local correspondences between point clouds of part shapes in both coarse- and fine-levels. To this end, we introduce Proxy Match Transform (PMT), an approximate high-order feature transform layer that enables reliable matching between mating surfaces of parts while incurring low costs in memory and computation. Building upon PMT, we introduce a new framework, dubbed Proxy Match TransformeR (PMTR), for the geometric assembly task. We evaluate the proposed PMTR on the large-scale 3D geometric shape assembly benchmark dataset of Breaking Bad and demonstrate its superior performance and efficiency compared to state-of-the-art methods. Indoor positioning systems (IPS) are gaining higher attention recently due to the increased demand for indoor location aware services. Visible light communication (VLC) is a promising technology to use for IPS. In particular, received signal strength (RSS) based visible light positioning (VLP) systems are gaining high attention due to their low complexity and cost, in addition to higher positioning accuracy compared to their radio frequency (RF) counterparts. One of the main challenges in RSS based VLP systems is encountered when the receiver (the target) is tilted and not placed in parallel with the transmitters (the anchors). RSS based trilateration techniques require a computationally expensive and time-consuming process to solve the nonlinear problem of tilted receivers. Fingerprint based systems generally provide high positioning accuracy with short positioning time, and maybe used to circumvent the need to deal with the high complexity associated with tilted receivers. However, the design of a fingerprinting VLP system for tilted receiver has not been explored yet as far as receivers with a single photodetector (PD) are concerned. In this work, a fingerprint based VLP system for tilted receivers using artificial neural networks (ANN) is proposed, where different types of input features for training the positioning algorithm are studied. We show that using the components of the normal vector to the PD's surface in addition to RSS values provides an excellent positioning accuracy with an average positioning error of 25.41 cm and a remarkably low average positioning time less than $\mathbf{5} \boldsymbol{\mu} \boldsymbol{s}$ . In addition, important research directions for future work are discussed.

Hydrothermally synthesized Al-doped β-Ga2O3 microrods for enhanced pH sensing performance

In our study, Al-doped β-Ga2O3 microrods were deposited on FTO glass substrate via hydrothermal method followed by calcination at 700 °C for 3 h. The Al-doped β-Ga2O3 microrods were characterized using XRD, SEM, XPS, and FTIR spectroscopy techniques. The intrinsic β-Ga2O3 extended-gate field-effect transistor (EGFET)-based pH sensor exhibited a pH sensitivity of 57.29 mV/pH with 99.34 % linearity within the pH range of 3–11. Conversely, the Al-doped β-Ga2O3 EGFET-pH sensor, containing 0.52 at. % of Al, demonstrated an elevated pH sensitivity of 77.63 mV/pH with 99.17 % linearity. Our findings indicate that the incorporation of Al enhances the pH sensing capabilities of β-Ga2O3 microrods to the presence of additional binding sites facilitated by its improved specific surface area. Remarkably, even a minute amount (0.52 at. %) of Al doping in β-Ga2O3 suffices to significantly improve the performance of pH sensing. These results underscore the potential of Al-doped β-Ga2O3 as a promising material for development of high-performance ion or biosensors. © 2024 Elsevier Inc.
