The Bamboo Forest Growth Optimization(BFGO) algorithm is an algorithm proposed by the growth law of bamboo forest, which has the advantages of fast convergence and not easily falling into local optimum. In this paper we have experimented the BFGO with several other population intelligence optimization algorithms on 23 benchmark test functions and proved its superiority. Also we apply the bamboo forest optimization algorithm to nighttime image enhancement in this paper, and the algorithm achieves better results on this application. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

An iterative inversion algorithm to reconstruct the shape of two-dimensional dielectric objects from far-field measurements is formulated and implemented. The proposed method uses an integral operator to map the unknown boundary of the object onto the far-field pattern of the scattered field. This mapping is inherently ill-posed and nonlinear. Therefore, Newton iterations are used for linearization, and the resulting linear equation at each iteration is regularized using a Tikhonov scheme. Numerical results validate the accuracy and the applicability of the proposed method.

Thin layers with high conductivity values, such as metal sheets, conductive paint, graphene, and other two-dimensional (2D) materials, are commonly used in various electromagnetic applications. One of the fundamental challenges in numerical modeling of these thin conductive layers is the requirement for an extremely fine mesh that can accurately capture field variations and account for the intricate geometrical features of the structure (H. Chen, A. J. Taylor and N. Yu, Rep. Prog. Phy., 79,10-35,2016). A dense mesh translates into high computational cost since the number of unknowns is increased and the time step size must be reduced for an explicit time marching scheme (to ensure that the Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) condition is satisfied). One can replace the thin conductive layer with an infinitesimally thin sheet on which the resistive boundary condition (RBC) is enforced (T. B. A. Senior and J. L. Volakis, London, UK: IET, 1995). This approach completely avoids the dense mesh and the high computational cost that comes with it. However, RBC has to be incorporated into the electromagnetic solver.

Fantasy Sports has a current market size of ${\$}$27B and is expected to grow more than ${\$}$84B in less than a decade. The intent is to create virtual teams that somehow reflect what would happen if the constituent players actually played in a team. Using individual player and team statistics, models can be trained to predict an outcome. But fans are left wanting more. To achieve a more realistic outcome, aspects of what makes live teams win need to be included: (1) transforming player statistics to reflect their relative importance with respect to a player position;(2) team chemistry (TC). In this work, we show a novel characterization of relative position statistics and a new description of TC. Drawn from the NBA's API, we form a data set to determine whether a fantasy team makes the playoffs using almost two dozen features, including TC. Various Machine Learning models are trained on this data and the best-performing model is offered to the users through a web service. Users can not only inspect fantasy teams and their TC but can also simulate their match-ups with existing 2023 NBA teams and utilize performance visualizations to help improve their team creation process. Kidney cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. The major types of malignant renal tumors are renal cell carcinoma and urothelial carcinoma. Although the majority of renal tumors are malignant, up to 20% are benign, most commonly renal cyst and angiomyolipomas. Ultrasound is the most accessible imaging tool in medical practice, but it highly depends on operator skill, which may lead to high false-negative rate in diagnosis. The purpose of this study was to develop a predictive model for the automated classification of renal tumors on ultrasound images using deep neural network. A total of 880 kidney ultrasound images were used for training and testing. Transfer learning was used to the ten Convolution neural network models. The kidney ultrasound images were classified as benign or malignant tumors. The classification performance of the model was evaluated by sensitivity and specificity. The research results show that VGG18 yielded the best performance, with a sensitivity of 79%, and a specificity of 86%. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper considers video and audio transmission in ICN (Information-Centric Networking)/ CCN (ContentCentric Networking), where each intermediate node can cache content. We have proposed LCD with Prob, combining traditional policies: LCD (Leave Copy Down) and probabilistic caching. This paper assumes a case where multiple video and audio streams exist simultaneously. We assess application-level QoS (Quality of Service) and QoE (Quality of Experience) of video and audio transmission utilizing LCD with Prob. We also add a mechanism for further QoE enhancement called “LCD with Prob deletion.” We assess application-level QoS using a computer simulation with a tree network and QoE by means of a subjective experiment. From the assessment result, we show the effectiveness of LCD with Prob deletion against existing policies.

Heralded optical entanglement distribution via lossy quantum channels: a comparative study

Quantum entanglement serves as a foundational resource for various quantum technologies. In optical systems, entanglement distribution relies on the indistinguishability and spatial overlap of photons. Heralded schemes play a crucial role in ensuring the reliability of entanglement generation by detecting ancillary photons to signal the creation of desired entangled states. However, photon losses in quantum channels remain a significant challenge, limiting the distance and capacity of entanglement distributions. This study suggests three heralded schemes for distributing multipartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states via lossy quantum channels. These schemes differ both qualitatively in their network architecture (centralized or decentralized) and photon source requirements (Bell states or single-photons), and quantitatively in their success probabilities and heralding efficiency. Through comprehensive analysis incorporating both practical implementation considerations and theoretical performance metrics, we find that each scheme offers distinct advantages depending on the number of parties, channel distance, and security requirements. The decentralized scheme proves particularly advantageous for networks requiring balanced information distribution, while centralized schemes may offer better performance for smaller networks. This analysis provides insights into designing resilient heralded circuits for quantum information processing over lossy channels, considering both architectural constraints and performance requirements. © 2025 Optica Publishing Group under the terms of the Optica Open Access Publishing Agreement.

Dense depth maps have been used as a key element of visual perception tasks. There have been tremendous efforts to enhance the depth quality, ranging from optimization-based to learning-based methods. Despite the remarkable progress for a long time, their applicability in the real world is limited due to systematic measurement biases such as density, sensing pattern, and scan range. It is well-known that the biases make it difficult for these methods to achieve their generalization. We observe that learning a joint representation for input modalities (e.g., images and depth), which most recent methods adopt, is sensitive to the biases. In this work, we disentangle those modalities to mitigate the biases with prompt engineering. For this, we design a novel depth prompt module to allow the desirable feature representation according to new depth distributions from either sensor types or scene configurations. Our depth prompt can be embedded into foundation models for monocular depth estimation. Through this embedding process, our method helps the pretrained model to be free from restraint of depth scan range and to provide absolute scale depth maps. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through extensive evaluations. Source code is publicly available at https://***/JinhwiPark/DepthPrompting.

In this paper, we consider multi-view video and audio streaming using MPEG-DASH, which enables to transmit video tailored to the network conditions over HTTP communication. This paper uses HTTP/2 instead of HTTP/1.1, which the authors previously used. HTTP/2 manages a series of request-response exchanges called a stream, which is assigned a unique stream ID. We perform a subjective experiment under various network conditions to evaluate application-level QoS and QoE. From the evaluation results, we investigate the effect of the HTTP/2 stream on the video and audio quality of the users in the multi-view video transmission scenario.
