Ensuring reliable communication can be incredibly challenging in emergencies due to the breakdown of conventional infrastructure. However, a promising solution is on the horizon: the integration of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) onto unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV), known as UAV-RIS. This innovative approach holds the potential to offer agile and adaptable communication services during crises, overcoming the limitations of traditional systems. This paper establishes an innovative UAV-RIS system with an active RIS to enhance the uplink communication between ground devices (GDs) and the air base station (ABS). We present an advanced communication strategy utilizing deep reinforcement learning (DRL) for UAV-RIS-supported uplink communication in dynamic emergencies. This scheme is designed to optimize the energy efficiency of the UAV-RIS communication system while adhering to quality of service (QoS) constraints for all GDs. It achieves this by jointly optimizing the trajectory of the UAV-RIS and the phase of the active RIS, ensuring efficient and reliable communication in challenging environments. To optimize the performance of the system, we propose a hierarchical Proximal Policy Optimization (H-PPO) algorithm and the upper and lower layers of H-PPO optimize the trajectory and phase control, respectively. Simulation results demonstrate that our scheme can effectively learn the communication strategy to enhance the performance of dynamic emergency communication networks. © 2024 IEEE.

Reasoning Abilities of Large Language Models: In-Depth Analysis on the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus

The existing methods for evaluating the inference abilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) have been predominantly results-centric, making it challenging to assess the inference process comprehensively. We introduce a novel approach using the Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus (ARC) benchmark to evaluate the inference and contextual understanding abilities of LLMs in a process-centric manner, focusing on three key components from the Language of Thought Hypothesis (LoTH): Logical Coherence, Compositionality, and Productivity. Our carefully designed experiments reveal that while LLMs demonstrate some inference capabilities, they still significantly lag behind human-level reasoning in these three aspects. The main contribution of this paper lies in introducing the LoTH perspective, which provides a method for evaluating the reasoning process that conventional results-oriented approaches fail to capture, thereby offering new insights into the development of human-level reasoning in artificial intelligence systems. © 2024, CC BY.

The fronthaul network architecture is the key to dealing with the massive traffic effectively and providing high-quality service, and the multiple base stations (BSs) deployed by it face the gigantic data transmission, which has given the demand for high-capacity communication and information security in the vehicular network. In this paper, we combine the millimeter wave (mmWave) communication and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technologies to escalate the communication capacity of multiple vehicle users (VUs), and propose a blockage-based cooperative jamming strategy to solve potential security risks in the vehicular network. In particular, with the help of jam-mers selected by this strategy, transmission security is enhanced simultaneously without escalating the instability of connections caused by the time-varying nature of vehicular networks under the NOMA transmission mechanism when the base station (BS) does not fully understand the channel state information (CSI) of VUs. Then we comprehensively analyze the specific distribution of roadways and the distance distribution of VUs under the NOMA strategy, and derive the performance metrics of the network based on the stochastic geometry method. Numerical results show that the proposed cooperative jamming scheme can effectively improve the secrecy performance of the vehicular network. © 2024 IEEE.

Multi-view videos (MVV) have emerged to provide users with immersively interactive experiences with 3D multimedia content. Compared with traditional 2D videos, MVV offers multiple view angles to avoid generating occluded regions from a single viewpoint and allows users to receive different view angles, which consume much higher bandwidth. In this paper, we leverage multicast and view synthesis to effectively reduce the number of transmitted views and total bandwidth consumption in software-defined content delivery networks (SD-CDN). By exploiting the SDN architecture, SD-CDN can optimize traffic engineering and the selection of multi-view sources to serve users. We formulate a new optimization problem, Online Multicast with View Synthesis (OMVS), prove the NP-hardness, and design an online algorithm with the ideas of View Popularity Cost Ratio, View Watching Possibility, and synthesis tree, to achieve the tightest competitive ratio. The experiment on real networks and implementation in an experimental SDN manifest that the proposed algorithm outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms regarding the total cost, bandwidth consumption, synthesis quality, and link and node utilization. © 2024 IEEE.

A discontinuous Galerkin time-domain scheme is formulated and implemented to analyze three-dimensional transient lasing dynamics. The proposed scheme solves a coupled system of the Maxwell and the rate equations. The atomic transitions through different energy levels are quantum-mechanically described by a four-level two-electron model, while the electro-magnetic interactions are treated using the Maxwell equations. The resulting solver accounts for the Pauli Exclusion Principle and permits robust simulation of lasing dynamics under optical pumping. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the applicability and the accuracy of the proposed scheme.

Modern retail businesses face a significant challenge with the inefficiency of manually changing price labels on shelves. This manual process not only consumes valuable time and resources but also increases the likelihood of errors, leading to potential inaccuracies in pricing and a less streamlined shopping experience for customers. The proposed solution is the implementation of an Electronic Shelf Label (ESL) system that automatically displays the prices of goods on retail business shelves. This system connects a website (front end and back end) to e-paper via a Wi-Fi network and microcontroller, allowing retail business owners to update prices more easily. Additionally, buyers can search for desired items through the website. The results are the time to send data from the website to the e-paper, namely, to know the performance of the e-paper used. The average time required from 10 attempts to send data from the website to the e-paper is 20.935 seconds. Since the data is connected to the server and will be updated automatically, using this system will be more efficient than manually changing the price label, although it takes time to transfer data from the website to the e-paper.

Ontology embeddings map classes, relations, and individuals in ontologies into Rn, and within Rn similarity between entities can be computed or new axioms inferred. For ontologies in the Description Logic EL++, several embedding methods have been developed that explicitly generate models of an ontology. However, these methods suffer from some limitations;they do not distinguish between statements that are unprovable and provably false, and therefore they may use entailed statements as negatives. Furthermore, they do not utilize the deductive closure of an ontology to identify statements that are inferred but not asserted. We evaluated a set of embedding methods for EL++ ontologies based on high-dimensional ball representation of concept descriptions, incorporating several modifications that aim to make use of the ontology deductive closure. In particular, we designed novel negative losses that account both for the deductive closure and different types of negatives. We demonstrate that our embedding methods improve over the baseline ontology embedding in the task of knowledge base or ontology completion. © 2024, CC BY.

Conveyor belts are commonly used in the mining industry for efficient material transport. However, they are prone to failures such as idler anomalies, belt tears, and misalignment. Current monitoring systems only evaluate the conveyor or idle belt's condition at the installation point. This study proposes a method to detect faults in conveyor belts, specifically idler anomalies and belt deviation, using two IMUs installed at the lateral extremities of the belt to evaluate its health along its route. In a reduced-scale conveyor belt, we conducted experiments by collecting gyroscopes and accelerometer data in various scenarios, including normal conditions and anomaly situations. We modified the idlers' physical structure or changed the belt tracks to create these scenarios. We used similarity analysis techniques to compare the data collected and performed statistical hypothesis analysis to observe the influence of the anomaly scenarios on the gyroscope and accelerometer data. We used Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) for gyroscope data to compare ground truth with anomaly scenarios. For the acceleration data, we performed vibration analysis by converting the time domain data to the frequency using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and evaluating the difference in spectral density between the reference and anomaly data. Statistical hypothesis analysis revealed that anomaly scenar-ios influenced the gyroscope x-axis and z-axis more. According to the spectral density analysis of the accelerometer, it was revealed that belt misalignment on the y-axis may be detected. © 2023 IEEE.

We propose a digital twin agent that constructs elderly digital twins by digitally transforming daily life of the elderly. We developed the digital twin agent as an avatar run on a smartwatch. The digital twin agent provides cooperation support functions with the society to the elderly. Those support function histories will be integrated with the digital twin. The digital twin agent can also monitor indoor daily life activities using distributed small sensors inside home. Then, those monitoring results will be integrated with the same digital twin. We confirmed that the digital twin agent could provide cooperation support functions with the society through evaluation experiments in Nagasaki city in Japan. We also confirmed that the digital twin agent could construct the digital twin based on those support function histories and offer mental health support functions using the constructed digital twin. © 2022 IEEE.

The electrically evoked compound action potential (ECAP) has been used in various clinical studies and has become a key physiological signal for cochlear implants (CI). This study used four sensing electrodes to record ECAP signals based on the alternating polarity approach. An electrical field imaging (EFI) result based on the finite element method was used to obtain the interface impedance, then ECAP simulation results were computed and compared with a patient's clinical ECAP measurements. Preliminary modeling results show that the interface impedance obtained by this EFI-based technique can improve the simulation accuracy of the ECAP model. The ECAP modeling result will be compared with clinical ECAP measurements to validate the model in the full paper.
