Contextual teaching and learning (CTL) is a promising way for language education, since it can improve performance to learn usage of words and expressions in real conversation or situations. However, implementation of CTL is challenging for teachers since they have to deal with complicated tasks in managing interaction with learners depending on the context, especially in case CTL is provided for the big class. In this paper, the authors propose movie based context-aware language learning that enables contextual self-learning on the movie. Two key concepts, object-oriented context modeling and context-aware quiz generation, are also given. The object-oriented context model is defined to describe the context of the movie scene. The context aware quiz generator of the system produces quizzes based on the description of the context by the object-oriented context model. Preliminary evaluation was conducted to check if the object oriented context model can describe the context of the movie scenes. It is confirmed that the object-oriented context model has enough descriptive power for the movie scenes although it should be improved for less confusion in modeling.

We present multi-junction small molecule organic photovoltaic (OPV) cells with efficiencies over 11%. The devices consist of two or three, vacuum thermally evaporated planar-mixed heterojunction sub-cells with minimal absorption overlap between the cells. By introducing a transparent interconnecting layer, a dual element (tandem) cell achieves a power conversion efficiency of 10.0 ± 0.5%. We further improve the cell performance by adding an additional (3 rd ) sub-cell that absorbs at the second order optical interference maximum within the stack. The triple-junction cell significantly improves the quantum efficiency at shorter wavelengths, achieving a power conversion efficiency of 11.1 ± 0.5%, which to our knowledge, is the highest reported for a multi-junction OPV cell in the scientific literature.

To address the nonstationarity issue in EEG-based brain computer interface (BCI), the computational model trained using the training data needs to adapt to the data from the test sessions. In this paper, we propose a novel adaptation approach based on the divergence framework. Cross-session changes can be taken into consideration by searching the discriminative subspaces for test data on the manifold of orthogonal matrices in a semi-supervised manner. Subsequently, the feature space becomes more consistent across sessions and classifiers performance can be enhanced. Experimental results show that the proposed adaptation method yields improvements in classification performance.

It is envisioned that in future dc power distribution of telecom systems and data centers the smart loads will communicated with sources informing of the changes in operation. This paper presents a strategy based on a pre-energized auxiliary power circuit to suppress fast transients from electronic loads. Since the transient-occurrence time will be informed by the load, the auxiliary circuit will pre-energize the dc bus and will inject additional current to counteract the change in load and in this way smooth the transient. In this paper, the design and operation principle of the proposed auxiliary circuit is explained. The proposed approach is verified in a dc microgrid model with 380 VDC and 24 VDC buses and is shown to be very effective in suppressing the load transients.

Genes encoding early signaling events in pathogen defense often are identified only by their phenotype. Such genes involved in barley-powdery mildew interactions include Mla, specifying race-specific resistance; Rarl (Required for Mla12-specified resistance1), and Roml (Restoration of Mla-specified resistancel). The HSP90-SGT1-RAR1 complex appears to function as chaperone in MLA-specified resistance, however, much remains to be discovered regarding the precise signaling underlying plant immunity. Genetic analyses of fast-neutron mutants derived from CI 16151 (Mla6) uncovered a novel locus, designated Rar3 (R_equired for Mla6-specified resitance3). Rar3 segregates independent of Mla6 and Rarl, and rar3 mutants are susceptible to Blumeria graminis f. sp. hordei (Bgh) isolate 5874 (A VRar), whereas, wild-type progenitor plants are resistant. Comparative expression analyses of the rar3 mutant vs. its wild-type progenitor were conducted via Barleyl GeneChip and GAIIx paired-end RNA-Seq. Whereas Rarl affects transcription of relatively few genes; Rar3 appears to influence thousands, notably in genes controlling ATP binding, catalytic activity, transcription, and phosphorylation; possibly membrane bound or in the nucleus, eQTL analysis of a segregating doubled haploid population identified over two-thousand genes as being regulated by Mla (q value/FDR=0.00001), a subset of which are significant in Rar3 interactions. The intersection of datasets derived from mla-loss-of-function mutants, Mla-associated eQTL, and rar3-mediated transcriptome reprogramming are narrowing the focus on essential genes required for Mla-specified immunity.

In wireless distributed networks, each node establishes its route autonomously. The optimum route should be selected according to the change in radio propagation environment. Link-state routing is a technique that shares link quality information and selects the optimum route from that information. Flooding is considered as an information sharing method, but it causes a broadcast storm problem. In this paper, to reduce the amount of information that needs to be transmitted, we propose an information sharing method that uses compressed sensing for link quality in wireless distributed networks. We evaluate the reduction effect of transmitting information by using compressed sensing.

A novel parallel Remote Center of Motion (RCM) mechanism is proposed for a surgical robot designed to perform minimally invasive needle-based interventions for lung cancer diagnosis and treatment. The proposed robot provides four degrees of freedom (DOFs) to orient and move a surgical needle within a spherical coordinate system. The RCM is beneath the skin surface to minimize the invasiveness of the surgical procedure while providing the required workspace. This compact, patient-mounted robot benefits from a design capable of measuring the pure interaction forces between the needle and the tissue. In this paper, the mechanism design and its specifications are described. The kinematic analysis is presented and isotropy of the mechanism for targeting tumors is studied. Finally, the performance of the proposed robot is evaluated experimentally.

A dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc/dc converter may interconnect a battery and a dc grid to achieve UPS or peak shaving functions which bring potential benefits to the power distribution for telecom equipment. Such application requires the DAB converter having fast dynamic response. In this work, a feedforward algorithm is proposed to achieve peak-current-control strategy. The proposed approach can facilitate the converter to generate fast response to reference steps comparing with a traditional PI control method, and does not need the leakage inductance information of transformer comparing with other advanced methods. The simulation result is given to verify the effectiveness and feasibility.
