Power generation project may face a big risk because of the large amount of investment money. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a new method to evaluate the risks for the investment. We have already proposed two new asset evaluation methods. One is the method using a net present value based on utility indifference pricing (UNPV method) and the other is probit model which simplifies UNPV method. In this paper, we propose UNPV method considering the scale effect. A conventional UNPV method evaluates a power generation project per 1kW. Therefore, it takes no consideration of the scale risk. By considering the scale effect, we can calculate optimal investment scale and maximum allowable scale. We apply it to the project of photovoltaic system and show the effectiveness of the new method.

Many applications of machine-to-machine (M2M) based intelligent transportation systems highly rely on the accurate estimation of neighbor map, where neighbor map mentions the locations of all nearby vehicles and pedestrians. To build the neighbor map, it usually integrates multiple sensors, such as GPS, odometer, inertial measurement unit (IMU), laser scanners, cameras, and RGB-D cameras. In this paper, we build a M2M framework to estimate the neighbor map and focus on the improvement of vehicle and pedestrian detection of most popular sensors, camera. We propose a novel grid-based object detection approach and deal with cameras on both roadside units and vehicles. It adapts to the environments and achieves high accuracy, and can be used to improve the performance of neighbor map estimation.

In this paper, we demonstrate the stable operation of integrated 4H-silicon carbide (SiC) diode bridge rectifier circuits at high temperature up to 773 K for the first time. The turn-on voltages of the fabricated 4H-SiC pn diode are 2.6 V and 1.4 V at room temperature and 773 K, respectively, with a low shifting rate of 2.2 mV/K. The integration of the 4H-SiC diode bridge rectifier circuit was achieved with contact and interconnect metallization technique for high temperature. The demonstration of the extremely high temperature operation of the integrated 4H-SiC diode bridge rectifier circuits brings promising applications in harsh environment electronics and sensing.

Emerging multi-hop machine-to-machine (M2M) communications that likely support a large number of wireless devices create new challenges for spectrum scarcity and energy efficiency. In parallel to pursuing physical layer transmission efficiency, traffic compression to reduce required wireless transmissions suggests a new paradigm of wireless networks. Utilizing the natures of broadcasting and information collection in wireless sensor or machine networks, cognitive traffic compression can be facilitated by our proposed optimal fusion rules and topology compression algorithm. Therefore, only the necessary and connected sensors/machines in M2M networks are required to transmit, to achieve the desirable distortion of information collection (i.e. detection/estimation error). In other words, given the desirable distortion, the number of sensors to transmit, or equivalently the total energy consumption, serves our purpose of energy efficiency for end-to-end networking. Numerical results show successful compression of total network traffic to significantly enhance networking energy efficiency.

programmability is one of the key factors on software defined networks (SDN), once it allows to decouple between data plan and control plan. However, in such context, managing several applications' inputs and outputs is a little explored task on controllers field, which are not in a controlled and organized environment. This article proposes a method to make SDN applications to reach the administrator, allow him to manage his use in the network. This proposal is validated through performance tests in the repository, which stores the applications, along with developed modules to help its management and control, making the organization and coordination method safe, efficient and adjustable to any controller on software-defined network.

Invisibility has attracted intensive research in various communities, e.g., optics, electromagnetics, acoustics, thermodynamics, dc, etc. However, many experimental demonstrations have only been achieved by virtue of simplified approaches due to the inhomogeneous and extreme parameters imposed by the transformation-optic method, and usually require a challenging realization with metamaterials. In this Letter, we demonstrate a bilayer thermal cloak made of bulk isotropic materials, and it has been validated as an exact cloak. We experimentally verified its ability to maintain the heat front and its heat protection capabilities in a 2D proof-of-concept experiment. The robustness of this scheme is validated in both 2D (including oblique heat front incidence) and 3D configurations. The proposed scheme may open a new avenue to control the diffusive heat flow in ways inconceivable with phonons, and also inspire new alternatives to the functionalities promised by transformation optics.

A variety of health and behavioral states can potentially be inferred from physiological measurements that can now be collected in the natural free-living environment. The major challenge, however, is to develop computational models for automated detection of health events that can work reliably in the natural field environment. In this paper, we develop a physiologically-informed model to automatically detect drug (cocaine) use events in the free-living environment of participants from their electrocardiogram (ECG) measurements. The key to reliably detecting drug use events in the field is to incorporate the knowledge of autonomic nervous system (ANS) behavior in the model development so as to decompose the activation effect of cocaine from the natural recovery behavior of the parasympathetic nervous system (after an episode of physical activity). We collect 89 days of data from 9 active drug users in two residential lab environments and 922 days of data from 42 active drug users in the field environment, for a total of 11,283 hours. We develop a model that tracks the natural recovery by the parasympathetic nervous system and then estimates the dampening caused to the recovery by the activation of the sympathetic nervous system due to cocaine. We develop efficient methods to screen and clean the ECG time series data and extract candidate windows to assess for potential drug use. We then apply our model on the recovery segments from these windows. Our model achieves 100% true positive rate while keeping the false positive rate to 0.87/day over (9+ hours/day of) lab data and to 1.13/day over (11+ hours/day of) field data.

Hybrid organic-inorganic polaritons are formed by the simultaneous strong coupling of two degenerate excitons and a microcavity photon at room temperature. Wannier-Mott and Frenkel excitons in spatially separated ZnO and 3,4,7,8-napthalene tetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTCDA) layers, respectively, placed in a single Fabry-Perot microcavity contribute to the interaction with the cavity. A Rabi splitting of (322±8) meV between the upper and middle branches of the three branch polariton energy-momentum dispersion is observed. This is compared to only (224±22) meV and (218±8) meV Rabi splittings for NTCDA-only and ZnO-only reference cavities, respectively, and indicates that the excitonic component of the polariton is a Frenkel-Wannier-Mott hybrid. Unlike previous reports of hybrid polaritons, the mixing of the organic and inorganic eigenstates occurs independently of angle due to their energetic degeneracy, and can be tailored by adjusting the optical field distribution within the cavity.

We report the excitation of a surface plasmon resonance (SPR) close to the orthogonal axis of a gold (Au) film on borosilicate glass. The need for prisms is removed simplifying the practical requirements for photonic devices and sensors. Spectroscopic measurement of SPR spectral shifts ~5o incidence within a reflection spectrophotometer for two liquids are taken. © 2014 OSA.

This paper proposes a method to identify the spatial distribution patterns of cone cells related with blood vessel in a given retina image. We define three types of the distribution patterns between cones and vessels. Positive correlation distribution (PCD) and negative correlation distribution (NCD) indicate that the cones tend to be close to or far from the vessels. While the cone cells do not have significant correlation with vessels, the cone distribution is regarded as the random distribution (RD). In our method, RD is modeled by many virtual retina images, each of which is generated by the vessels extracted from the original retina image and the virtual cells are selected randomly from the image. Using the virtual images, we estimate the distribution range of RD. When the distribution of the original cells is above the upper limit or below the lower limit of the RD distribution, the cell distribution is NCD or PCD. Otherwise, the cell distribution is regarded as RD.
