Federated Learning (FL) and the Internet of Things (IoT) have revolutionized data processing and analysis, overcoming the traditional limitations of cloud computing. However, traditional machine learning strategies lead to increased costs and catastrophic forgetting due to model retraining with new datasets. Continual learning has been proposed to counter this, enabling models to adapt to new data while preserving previous knowledge, which is beneficial for dynamic edge environments. Despite these advantages, the retention of previous knowledge during the continual learning process may lead to the information leakage. To address the inherent challenges of multitask scenarios, we present a Federated Continual Learning (FCL) framework that integrates the privacy-preserving benefits of Federated Learning (FL) into a continual learning system, ensuring both continual learning and privacy preservation in edge computing data processing and analysis. Specifically, our architecture introduces dedicated fully-connected layers for each task. This architecture ensures that distinctive features pertinent to each task are not only captured but also preserved throughout the model’s lifespan. Within our framework, data is processed via task-specific layers. Subsequently, the final label is determined by associating it with the paramount prediction value, thus capitalizing on the model’s comprehensive knowledge reservoir to bolster prediction accuracy. We subjected our FCL framework to rigorous validation using two benchmark datasets: MNIST and CFAR-10. Experimental outcomes unequivocally substantiate the efficacy of our proposed methodology.

With the demand for music continuing to grow as people seek variety and personal resonance, many works focus on music generation. In this study, we propose GENPIA, a genre-conditioned piano music generation system. The system encompasses Anime, R&B, Jazz, and Classical music genres. To build our system, we collect and label audio data of various genres for the specific objective of our research. REMI audio representation with genre information extension is applied during data pre-processing to present the audio data with a better data structure. Transformer-XL is implemented as the model to learn knowledge about the extended audio representation and generate the desired output audio. An external dataset, called Ailabs. tw lK7, is utilized for pre-training purposes. The results obtained from a listening questionnaire show that GENPIA can generate better piano pieces conditioned on different genres compared to the prior state-of-the-art work.

Dementia affects 50 million people worldwide, underscoring the urgent need for effective interventions to enhance their well-being. While reminiscence intervention shows promise, its implementation is hindered by limited human resources, making machine-aided systems a viable automated solution for seamless photo-reminiscence sessions. In this paper, we introduce an empathetic response generation system specifically designed to enhance a question-only photo-reminiscence chatbot, with a focus on improving emotional context understanding and enhancing conversation engagement. We leverage Transformers to encode dialogue history, infer emotional states from user responses, and extract named entities. By combining template-based utterances with a retrieval chatbot, our system generates relevant and empathetic responses to user replies. Our system’s effectiveness is validated through human evaluations using a Likert-like scale to assess engagement levels. The results demonstrate that our approach surpasses both the question-only system and other models from existing works, including retrieval and generated models. This highlights our system’s potential to enhance interactions and engagement, advancing technology-driven interventions for dementia that improve well-being and quality of life.

Multi-robot systems can provide substantial increase in efficiency and/or flexibility in different scenarios. Applications in various settings have been studied in the literature, such as disaster management, surveillance, object transportation as well as search-and-rescue. A particular case that can highly benefit from the employment of multiple agents is the logistics in a warehouse scenario. This work proposes an multi-agent Q-learning based algorithm with curriculum learning and transfer learning to perform the path planning process. With progressively more complex stages of training as well as knowledge transfer from one stage to another, the algorithm is capable of achieve high success rates. In order to validate the proposed method, simulations were done to compare it to other combinations of the used techniques, as well as using Q-learning only. Scalability tests were also performed. The proposed method achieved up to 94% success rate after training.

The work presents a novel wavy channel nanosheet field effect transistor (WCNSFET) and its circuit-level performance. In this work, a single nanosheet is transformed into a wave-like structure to enhance the physical device area, thus showing an improvement in device performance. The device and circuit level performances are analyzed using 3D TCAD simulation tools. Furthermore, the wavy channel nanosheet FETs are analyzed with different number of waves in a single sheet and compared with flat sheet-based transistors for different channel materials (Ge and GaAs). The results reveal the improvement in drive current, low propagation delay, a smooth voltage transfer characteristic, high noise margin, and low energy. The results achieved with this novel device make the device a promising candidate for next-generation low power CMOS applications.

Unmanned aerial systems provide many applications with the ability to perform flying tasks autonomously,and hence have received significant research and commercial attention in the past *** of the most popular unmanned aerial platforms for such tasks is the small-scale rotorcraft with multiple rotors,commonly known as *** order for these platforms to perform fully autonomous missions and tasks,they require a sophisticated low-level flight control system that is integrated with advanced task and motion planning modules,which combine together to form the complete unmanned aerial system(UAS).In this paper,the planning module of unmanned multicopter systems is discussed in detail,and a comprehensive survey on techniques for both motion and task planning reported in literature and by the Unmanned Systems Research Group at the National University of Singapore is presented.

Supercapacitors are known for longer cycle life and faster charging rate compared to batteries. However, the energy density of supercapacitors requires improvement to expand their application space. To raise the energy density of redox supercapacitors, this work demonstrates electro-polymerization on both sides of electrodes to increase material loading, reduce overall device mass, and consequently increase the capacitance, power, and energy density of supercapacitors. We achieved an energy density of 1823 mWh kg-1 and a power density of 16.5 W kg-1 with a wide potential window of 3 V. © 2023 IEEE.

Increasing amounts of data are being generated every year. Sustainable computing systems have become capable of extracting and learning information from the underlying data. Edge and AI (artificial intelligence) are expanding into industrial systems requiring new computing and networking infrastructure. Due to this, SLA computing is becoming increasingly challenging to handle in these emerging cloud environments. The cloud is a service that provides virtual resources to users. Qualitative and quantitative findings in market-oriented approaches are one of the most common methods for managing virtual and physical machines in a network. When allocating services, price is an important factor to consider. In this study, we aim to determine the initial price of VMs while considering the dynamic pricing model in a competitive, sustainable computing system. Besides negotiation-based trading, a multifactor architecture is used for trading in the marketplace. Based on the simulation results, it was found that the performance could be improved by categorizing the VMs based on regression. According to the simulation results, the cloud market system provides a better service-level agreement (SLA) and response time when assigning virtual machines to the market. Based on the results, we found that using the regression method for categorizing the VMs to manage the market improved the SLA. © 2023, The Author(s).

To satisfy the high data rate requirements, cellular systems will evolve towards the direction of higher carrier frequencies and larger antenna arrays. The conventional phased arrays are hard to fulfill such a vision due to its excessive power consumption induced by numerous phase shifters. To address this issue, Reconfigurable Refractive Surfaces (RRSs) provide a energy efficient solution without relying on phase shifters. With enlarged radiation aperture and increased working frequency, users are more likely to be located in the near field of the RRS. Moreover, the frequency selectivity of the RRS cannot be neglected given the wideband communications enabled by higher frequency bands. These two effects jointly aggravate the beam split problem where the signal strength of different frequency components cannot concentrate on the user, leading to a data rate degradation. In this paper, we study an RRS-based wideband near-field communication system with multiple users. Unlike most existing works, which only considered the beam split effect under near-field conditions, we jointly consider the influence of the frequency selectivity of RRS and near-field conditions on the beam split effect. To mitigate the beam split effect, the time-delay units are introduced in the RRS elements based on which a beamforming scheme is proposed to improve system data rate by jointly optimizing the digital beamformer, the phase shifts of RRS and the time-delay units. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed scheme.
