Bolt/nut loosening inspections are still predominantly performed by human experts using hammering methods. To enable non-experts to conduct these inspections, we propose a novel approach to identifying the degree of loosening in bolts and nuts by applying wavelet transforms to hammering vibration data and utilizing deep learning. In this method, vibration data near the bolt, collected via hammering inspections with an acceleration sensor, is converted into images using wavelet transforms. These wavelet images are then preprocessed to extract and highlight features related to loosening. The preprocessed images are subsequently analyzed using deep learning models to estimate the degree of loosening.

Development of a Taiwanese Speech Synthesis System Using Hidden Markov Models and a Robust Tonal Phoneme Corpus

The number of young native speakers of Taiwanese, the variant of Southern Min spoken in Taiwan, has decreased. Technological advancements such as text-to-speech (TTS) systems could help arrest this decline. The aim of this study was to design a robust tonal phoneme corpus and a speech synthesis system for Modern Literal Taiwanese (MLT). MLT subsyllables were analyzed using phonetics and phonology to establish tonal phoneme models. These robust tonal phoneme models and hidden Markov models were used to construct an MLT TTS synthesis system. Algorithm-based training resulted in 869 balanced sentences containing 12,544 syllables, with each sentence containing an average of 14.4 syllables. In total, 218 sentences, which included rare phonemes, were manually drafted to supplement the corpus. The synthesized phonemes were deemed to have high intelligibility and could be included in the developed TTS system. According to the HTK speech recognition tool, the overall phoneme recognition rate was 96.47%. Testers, who were native Taiwanese speakers, assigned the synthesized sentences a mean opinion score of 4, indicating that they sounded natural. This developed system and the results described herein can inspire future developments in speech technology and computational linguistics. © 2024 Institute of Information science. The effect of visual advanced driver assistance systems on a following human driver in a mixed-traffic condition

Rapid development in vehicular technology has caused more automated vehicle control to increase on the roads. Studies showed that driving in mixed traffic with an autonomous vehicle (AV) had a negative impact on the time headway (THW) of conventional vehicles (CVs) (i.e., driven by humans). To address this issue, there is a need to equip CV with visual advanced driver assistance systems (ADASs) that helps the driver maintain safe headway when driving near AVs. This study examines the perception of drivers using visual ADAS and their associated risk while driving behind the AV at constant and varying speeds. The preliminary results showed that while visual ADAS could help drivers keep the safe THW, it could affect drivers’ ability to react to emergencies. This implies that visual modality alone might not be sufficient and therefore requires some other feedback or intelligent transport systems to help drivers maintain safe driving in a mixed-traffic condition.

Understanding the mechanistic interpretability of mutation effects in a protein can help predict the clinical implications of the genetic variants. Hence, computational variant effect predictions that involve protein structural features of the protein mutations might be suitable in this case. In this work, we focus on BRCT domains of BRCA1 gene that is widely studied in breast cancer studies. We retrieved 88 selected missense variants found in BRCT domains annotated in both ClinVar and gnomAD databases. To computationally characterize the pathogenic property of the mutations we used two types of features extracted from protein structures: a change in free Gibbs energy and a set of features derived from molecular dynamics simulations of each mutant. Using a dimensional reduction and Gaussian mixture model (GMM)-based clustering we demonstrate that the variants are segregated into two regions that may correspond to their pathogenic status. This method can be a potential computational pipeline for providing the preliminary mechanistic interpretation of mutation effects in terms of their thermodynamic and structural features. © 2023 IEEE.

Harmonic currents in a receiver in wireless power transfer (WPT) systems can degrade performance of the receiver device by corrupting the DC power plane. The DC plane at the receiver serves as a constant reference that allows for dependent, sensitive electronics to operate with acceptable precision. However, if that reference is corrupted by noise, then the functions of the system, such as sensing and wireless communication, can degrade significantly. To reduce the harmonic current content in the receiver, and thereby improve the DC supply constancy, the optimal arbitrary voltage transmitter excitation is derived. To physically generate the derived arbitrary voltage, the signal is converted to a multilevel voltage using a phase-shifted carrier modulation. This multilevel voltage is then realized via the design of a full-bridge flying capacitor multilevel inverter and circuit simulations demonstrated the reduction of the harmonic currents in the receiver. By comparison to using a square-wave input voltage, circuit simulations demonstrate that a 5-level multilevel inverter reduces the total harmonic distortion (THD) of the received current from 6.79 % to 0.69 %, effectively reducing the harmonic currents in the receiver by 90 %.

This paper introduces the R package INLAjoint, designed as a toolbox for fitting a diverse range of regression models addressing both longitudinal and survival outcomes. INLAjoint relies on the computational efficiency of the integrated nested Laplace approximations methodology, an efficient alternative to Markov chain Monte Carlo for Bayesian inference, ensuring both speed and accuracy in parameter estimation and uncertainty quantification. The package facilitates the construction of complex joint models by treating individual regression models as building blocks, which can be assembled to address specific research questions. Joint models are relevant in biomedical studies where the collection of longitudinal markers alongside censored survival times is common. They have gained significant interest in recent literature, demonstrating the ability to rectify biases present in separate modeling approaches such as informative censoring by a survival event or confusion bias due to population heterogeneity. We provide a comprehensive overview of the joint modeling framework embedded in INLAjoint with illustrative examples. Through these examples, we demonstrate the practical utility of INLAjoint in handling complex data scenarios encountered in biomedical research. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Universities can employ information technology as one means of achieving their goals and objectives. Universities can get advantages from information technology, such as effective resource management and information management for decision-making. However, don't forget that the campus must consider what technology is appropriate to assist them achieve their goals, particularly in the current industrial era 4.0 where technology is available with many different choices. The campus requires an enterprise architecture in order to design, manage, and coordinate information technology infrastructure, applications, and processes strategically and thoroughly. The adoption of enterprise information system architecture (EA) is also intended to improve the quality of services provided to internal and external stakeholders. In this case, Enterprise Architecture can help an organization to match its information technology resources with business processes and strategies to achieve their goals. This research was conducted using TOGAF ADM, also known as the Open Group Architecture Framework Architecture Development Method. This method offers best practices for creating enterprise architecture and emphasizes several steps that include creating an architectural vision, information systems, business architecture modeling to help XYZ campus manage all their information technology.

Local Sequential MCMC for Data Assimilation with Applications in Geoscience

This paper presents a new data assimilation (DA) scheme based on a sequential Markov Chain Monte Carlo (SMCMC) DA technique [36] which is provably convergent and has been recently used for filtering, particularly for high-dimensional non-linear, and potentially, non-Gaussian state-space models. Unlike particle filters, which can be considered exact methods and can be used for filtering non-linear, non-Gaussian models, SMCMC does not assign weights to the samples/particles, and therefore, the method does not suffer from the issue of weight-degeneracy when a relatively small number of samples is used. We design a localization approach within the SMCMC framework that focuses on regions where observations are located and restricts the transition densities included in the filtering distribution of the state to these regions. This results in immensely reducing the effective degrees of freedom and thus improving the efficiency. We test the new technique on high-dimensional (d ∼ 104 − 105) linear Gaussian model and non-linear shallow water models with Gaussian noise with real and synthetic observations. For two of the numerical examples, the observations mimic the data generated by the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission led by NASA, which is a swath of ocean height observations that changes location at every assimilation time step. We also use a set of ocean drifters' real observations in which the drifters are moving according the ocean kinematics and assumed to have uncertain locations at the time of assimilation. One of the health problems that require special attention is diabetes, besides the growth of this disease infection is increasing in various circles ranging from children, adults, men, women and the elderly. So to detect diabetes at an early stage, machine learning algorithms are the right choice to help detect indications of diabetes. This paper presents experimental results related to the exploration of the use of a Super Vector Machine (SVM) for data classification of Diabetes. The model used in this experiment is the Binary Classification Model. Based on the test results, the highest accuracy is obtained by using a total of 700 lines of data, which is 75,7143%. The Best estimated feasible point in Box Constraint is 272.29 with a KernelScale area of 72.627. © 2021 IEEE

The use of balanced medical datasets is essential to improve the precision and accuracy of machine learning models in the healthcare field. However, dataset imbalance often becomes an obstacle, especially in the diagnosis of skin diseases. This research aims to develop a Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) method that is more effective in generating synthetic skin datasets to overcome problems in integrating medical datasets. The methods used include developing and training a GAN model to produce realistic synthetic skin images, with a focus on improving the quality and diversity of the synthetic data produced. Important results from this research show that the developed GAN model is able to produce synthetic skin images that are not only realistic but also able to balance the original dataset. The implications of these findings include improving the accuracy and performance of machine learning models in the diagnosis of skin diseases, as well as the potential use of these methods in other medical fields that face similar problems with imbalanced datasets.
