In this paper the incipient fault detection problem in induction machine stator-winding is considered. The problem is solved using a new technique of change point detection in time series, based on a three-step formulation. The technique can detect up to two change points in the time series. The first step consists of a Kohonen neural network classification algorithm that defines the model to be used, one change point or two change points. The second step consists of a fuzzy clustering to transform the initial data, with arbitrary distribution, into a new one that can be approximated by a beta distribution. The fuzzy cluster centers are determined by using the Kohonen neural network classification algorithm used in the first step. The last step consists in using the Metropolis-Hastings algorithm for performing the change point detection in the transformed time series generated by the second step with that known distribution. The incipient faults are detected as long as they characterize change points in such transformed time series. The main contribution of the proposed approach in this paper, related to previous one in the Literature, is to detect up to two change points in the time series considered, besides the enhanced resilience of the new fault detection procedure against false alarms, combined with a good sensitivity that allows the detection of rather small fault signals. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the proposed methodology. © 2010 IEEE.

Most biomedical and biological systems have nonlinear dynamics [25, 27], which bring difficulties in modelling and identification. These systems are usually represented as a series of blocks, and each block stands for a linear or nonlinear subsystem. Among those block-oriented models, Wiener model, Hammerstein model and Wiener-Hammerstein model are very popular. The Wiener model is represented as a linear dynamics followed by a nonlinear static system, while the Hammerstein model is composed in the reversed order, and the Wiener-Hammerstein model is constructed as a nonlinear static system surrounded by two linear dynamics (see Figure 24.1). All those three type of models have been extensively researched, and many identification methods have been proposed (e.g. [2, 3, 4, 6, 11, 23, 31, 39, 40]). In this chapter, we use Wiener-Hammerstein system to model the paralysed muscle under electrical stimulation, and propose an effective identification method specifically for the proposed model. © 2010 Springer London.

Cluster analysis is used in several research areas to classify data sets in groups by their similar characteristics. Metaheuristic-based techniques, such as Genetic Algorithms (GAs) and Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), have been applied in order to increase the clustering algorithm performance. GA and ACO-based clustering algorithms are capable of efficiently and automatically forming natural groups from a pre-defined number of clusters. This paper presents a GA and an ACO algorithm to the clustering problem. Both algorithms were refined using local search in order to improve the clustering accuracy. The results are compared on numeric UCI databases.

The paper addresses Medical Hand Drawing Management System architecture and implementation. In the system, we developed four modules: hand drawing management module; patient medical records query module; hand drawing editing and upload module; hand drawing query module. The system adapts windows-based applications and encompasses web pages by *** hosting mechanism under web services platforms. The hand drawings implemented as files are stored in a FTP server. The file names with associated data, e.g. patient identification, drawing physician, access rights, etc. are reposited in a database. The modules can be conveniently embedded, integrated into any system. Therefore, the system possesses the hand drawing features to support daily medical operations, effectively improve healthcare qualities as well. Moreover, the system includes the printing capability to achieve a complete, computerized medical document process. In summary, the system allows web-based applications to facilitate the graphic processes for healthcare operations.

This work approaches relative aspects to the alarm processing problem and fault diagnosis in system level, having as purpose filter the alarms generated during a outage and identify the equipment under fault. A methodology was developed using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) and Genetic Algorithms (GA) in order to resolve the problem. This procedure had as initiative explore the GA capacity to deal with combinatory problems, as well as the ANN processing speed and generalization capacity. Such strategy favors a fast and robust solution. © 2010 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

In this paper Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) technique is implemented and applied to the system identification problem of a Magneto-Rheological (MR) damper. GMDH networks are used to approximate the forward and inverse dynamic behaviors of a MR damper. The difficulty of this identification problem stems from the inherent hysteretic and highly nonlinear dynamics of MR dampers. The GMDH-based solution exhibits comparable identification accuracy in both the forward and inverse models as compared to state-of-the-art more computationally extensive solutions. © 2009 IEEE.

electrical muscle stimulation demonstrates potential for restoring functional movement and for preventing muscle atrophy after spinal cord injury (SCI). To optimize delivery of electrical stimulation protocols, an accurate and easy-to-implement mathematical skeletal muscle model is essential. The existing models are either accurate but complex, making them hard to implement, such as the Hill-Huxley-type model, or simple but inaccurate, such as second order model. In this paper, we propose a Wiener-Hammerstein system to model the paralyzed skeletal muscle dynamics under electrical stimulus conditions. The proposed model has substantial advantages in identification algorithm analysis and implementation including computational complexity and convergence. Experimental data sets were collected on soleus muscles under 15 Hz frequency stimulation for fourteen subjects with SCI. The simulation results show that the proposed model outperforms the Hill-Huxley-type model not only in peak force prediction, but also in fitting performance for force output of each individual stimulation train. © 2009 IFAC.

Modelling and Simulation (M&S) is increasingly important in numerous disciplines. M&S also has gained acceptance as a discipline in its own right. There is growing demand for at least two different approaches to M&S graduate education, one path for users and another for developers of M&S. Thus, the traditional department-focused approach is no longer adequate for MS education. This paper outlines the development of a multidisciplinary approach to M&S graduate education at Old Dominion University. The approach encourages development of a number of M&S programmes, coordinated by university-level oversight, in which all academic colleges participate. Copyright © 2009, Inderscience Publishers.

Summary Single-molecule spectroscopy and detection are powerful techniques for the study of single fluorescent particles and their interaction with their environment. We present a low-cost system for simultaneous real-time acquisition, storage of inter-photon arrival times and the calculation and display of the fluorescence time trace, autocorrelation function and distribution of delays histogram for single-molecule experiments. From a hardware perspective, in addition to a multi-core computer, only a standard low-cost counting board is required as processing is software-based. Software is written in a parallel programming environment with time crucial operations coded in ANSI-C. Crucial to system performance is a simple and efficient real-time autocorrelation algorithm (acf) optimized for the count rates (approximately 104 cps) encountered in single-molecule experiments. The algorithm's time complexity is independent of temporal resolution, which is maintained at all time delays. The system and algorithm's performance was validated by duplicating the signal from the photon detector and sending it to both the ordinary counter board and a commercial correlator simultaneously. The data acquisition system's robustness under typical single-molecule experimental conditions was tested by observing the diffusion of Rhodamine 6G molecules in deionized water. © 2009 The Royal Microscopical Society.
