System dynamics of supply chain network organization structure

Information technology is providing manufacturers with additional flexibility with regard to their supply chain network choices. Our research studies supply chain network organization structures categorized by the organic and mechanistic management control structures. The structural impacts on cost and fill rate performance are studied in two-echelon and two-supply-chain network organization models under different market coordination conditions using system dynamic simulations. Our results show significant effects of demand and network structural factors, and their interactions, on these measures. As demand becomes dynamic, the cooperative interaction model, where supply chains cooperate to satisfy customer demand, is found to have better system performance than the competitive supply chain model. The analysis also suggests that increasing the responsiveness at the downstream plant is particularly important to the overall system performance improvement.

Electric, water, gas and transportation utilities face severe challenges associated with security, quality, availability, reliability and profitability issues. They must solve interrelated system problems with respect to generation of electricity, transportation of fuel, and potable as well as waste water. In the future, engineers and managers of utilities must be well versed in the different disciplines of engineering including electrical civil, mechanical and information technology. The University of Colorado at Boulder addresses this educational opportunity by proposing a novel Integrated Utilities Management program for M.S. candidates who have a solid B.S. background or equivalent in a related discipline. The M.S. program will consist of four interdisciplinary paths dealing with business management and legal topics as they relate to federal and state regulatory issues, as well as agency and people-related leadership issues. The electric utilities option of this program will be centered on three core courses related to electric power generation/transmission and distribution, security and availability, quality and reliability, economics and environmental policy, and utility finance;two elective courses from a group of courses that address nuclear power, waste water, solid waste, telecommunications, renewable energies, data communication, fuels and case studies;and one capstone course consisting of either operations research or the investigation and resolution of a pending utility project such as the right-of-way of transmission lines, specification of new power plants, retrofitting of power plants or their impact on the environment. It is expected that candidates for this MS program will come from universities, from utilities, and from private and public agencies. The MS program can be completed by full- or part time students within one or two years of intensive study, respectively. Generally peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction imposes transmission performance degradation or system capacity reduction. This paper proposes a method for reducing the PAPR of OFDM signals by combining carrier interferometry (CI) spreading code and iterative processing (IP). The proposed method is capable of reducing the PAPR significantly while minimizing the bit error rate (BER) performance degradation. computer simulation results prove the effectiveness of the proposed method. Further, the proposed method does not introduce out-of-band interference, which requires filtering whose complexity depends on the filtering requirement.

In this study, various thicknesses of Pd catalytic films were deposited on Ti/Si substrates and pretreated with NH/sub 3/. The effects of catalyst deposition parameters and NH/sub 3/ pretreatment time (0, 1, and 10 minutes) on the size distribution of Pd catalytic particles, and subsequently, on the diameter and density of synthesized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were investigated. The CNTs were synthesized by thermal CVD at 750/spl deg/C using methane (CH/sub 4/) as the carbon source, and a mixture of Ar/H/sub 2/ (80 vol.%/20 vol.%) as the carrier gas.

In this paper, the study of thermal CVD grown CNT field emitters in a triode amplifier configuration is reported. The DC characteristics of the CNT triode are investigated, including I/sub a/ vs. V/sub a/ for different V/sub g/. Moreover, DC parameters such as transconductance, amplification factor and anode resistance of the triode amplifier are determined. It was shown that a higher amplification factor can be achieved with optimum gate-anode-cathode spacing such that the cathode is effectively shielded from the anode by the gate but the anode still collects all electrons emitted from the cathode. High emission current at low gate voltage is key to achieving high transconductance. This can be obtained by optimum configuration of high-density CNTs array in a triode structure with a common gate.

Multiparent crossovers have been validated their outperformance on several optimization problems. However, there are two issues to be considered - the number of parents and the disruptiveness caused by multiple parents. We present a tabu multiparent genetic algorithm (TMPGA) to address these two issues by integrating tabu search into the mating of multiparent genetic algorithms. TMPGA utilizes the tabu restriction and the aspiration criterion to sift selected parents in consideration of population diversity and selection pressure. Furthermore, the resulting mating validity further adjusts the number of parents participating in a mating. Experiments are conducted with four common test functions. The results indicate that TMPGA can achieve better performance than both two-parent GA and multiparent GA with the diagonal crossover. © 2003 IEEE.

We present a functional and structural didactic simulator of Cache Memory Systems developed at the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais, Brazil. The development occurred during the undergraduate computer Architecture discipline, in the computer science course. Its implementation is one part of a new didactic method, in which developers (students of the computer Architecture discipline) must learn the concepts and theory of the discipline topics to correctly apply them in the simulator. In our simulator, DCMSim, there are features to allow students to construct and verify knowledge, testing and comparing several different configurations and memory access traces. © 2003 IEEE.

This paper proposes the development of a fuzzy predictive control. Genetic algorithms (GA's) are used to automatically tune the controller. A recurrent neural network is used to identify the process, and then provides predictions about the process behavior, based on control actions applied to the system. These predictions are used by the fuzzy controller, in order to accomplish a better control of an alcoholic fermentation process from chemical industry. This problem has been chosen due to its non-linearity and large accommodation time, that make it hard to control by standard controllers. Comparison of performance is made with non-predictive approaches(PID and Fuzzy-PD), and also with another predictive approach, GPC(Generalized Predictive Control).
