Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a type of diabetes mellitus that attacks the retina of the eye. DR will cause patients to experience blindness slowly. Generally, DR can be detected by using a special instrument called an ophthalmoscope to view the inside of the eyeball. However, in conditions where there is a very small difference between the normal image and the DR image, computer-based assistance is needed for maximizing image reading value. In this research, a method of image quality improvement will be carried out which will then be integrated with a classification algorithm based on deep learning. The results of image improvement using Contrast Limited Adaptive Histogram Equalization (CLAHE) shows that the average accuracy of the method on several models is very competitive, 91% for the VGG16 model, 95% for InceptionV3, and 97% for EfficientNet compared to the results original image which only has an accuracy of 87% for VGG16 model, 90% for InceptionV3 model, and 95% for EfficientNet. However, in ResNet34 better accuracy is obtained in the original image with an accuracy of 95% while in the CLAHE image the accuracy value is only 84%. The results of this comprehensive evaluation and recommendation of famous backbone networks can be useful in the computer-Aided diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. © 2022 Elsevier B.V.. ResLearn: Transformer-based Residual Learning for Metaverse Network Traffic Prediction

Our work proposes a comprehensive solution for predicting Metaverse network traffic, addressing the growing demand for intelligent resource management in eXtended Reality (XR) services. We first introduce a state-of-the-art testbed capturing a real-world dataset of virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) traffic, made openly available for further research. To enhance prediction accuracy, we then propose a novel view-frame (VF) algorithm that accurately identifies video frames from traffic while ensuring privacy compliance, and we develop a Transformer-based progressive error-learning algorithm, referred to as ResLearn for Metaverse traffic prediction. ResLearn significantly improves time-series predictions by using fully connected neural networks to reduce errors, particularly during peak traffic, outperforming prior work by 99%. Our contributions offer Internet service providers (ISPs) robust tools for real-time network management to satisfy Quality of Service (QoS) and enhance user experience in the Metaverse. © 2024, CC BY.

The rapid advancement of immersive technologies has propelled the development of the Metaverse, where the convergence of virtual and physical realities necessitates the generation of high-quality, photorealistic images to enhance user experience. However, generating these images, especially through Generative Diffusion Models (GDMs), in mobile edge computing environments presents significant challenges due to the limited computing resources of edge devices and the dynamic nature of wireless networks. This paper proposes a novel framework that integrates contract-inspired contest theory, Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), and GDMs to optimize image generation in these resource-constrained environments. The framework addresses the critical challenges of resource allocation and semantic data transmission quality by incentivizing edge devices to efficiently transmit high-quality semantic data, which is essential for creating realistic and immersive images. The use of contest and contract theory ensures that edge devices are motivated to allocate resources effectively, while DRL dynamically adjusts to network conditions, optimizing the overall image generation process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach not only improves the quality of generated images but also achieves superior convergence speed and stability compared to traditional methods. This makes the framework particularly effective for optimizing complex resource allocation tasks in mobile edge Metaverse applications, offering enhanced performance and efficiency in creating immersive virtual environments. © 2025, CC BY.

The ability of robots to imitate human learning strategies-rapidly adapting to new tasks without large datasets-has garnered significant attention in meta-learning. Meta-reinforcement learning seeks to enhance robotic agent flexibility across diverse tasks and contexts, offering promise where single-task learning often fails. Despite advancements like multi-task diffusion models and task-weighted optimization mechanisms, effectively training tasks with varying complexities simultaneously remains a major challenge. This paper introduces a novel meta-reinforcement learning method that addresses this issue by clustering the training tasks of robotic arms based on semantic and trajectory similarities, while leveraging adaptive learning rates and task-specific weights proposed by the multitask optimization techniques. Our approach, TEAM, emphasizes performance-driven semantic clustering, optimizing based on robotic task similarity, complexity, and convergence objectives. We also integrate fast adaptive and multi-task optimization of the diffusion model to enhance computational efficiency and adaptability. More specifically, we introduce a cluster-specific optimization technique, using specialized parameters for each group to allow more refined task handling. The experimental validation demonstrates the effectiveness of this scalable method in improving performance, adaptability, and efficiency in real-world, heterogeneous robotic tasks, further advancing robotic computing in meta-reinforcement learning.

The 5-level tone value labeling system helps characterize pitch contours of syllables for L2 Mandarin learners and teachers to facilitate tone acquisition and tone error analysis, respectively. In the past, linguistic experts did the tone value labeling and initially used it to represent or analyze the pitch contours of monosyllables. Some L2 Mandarin teachers also used the tone value labeling system to analyze pitch contours of continuous speech and illustrate pitch realizations for L2 Mandarin learners. However, the pitch contours of the labeled tone values of continuous speech were rarely objectively measured or analyzed. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of tone values of a continuous read speech corpus uttered by six Romance L2 Mandarin learners. The pitch contours of the tone value classes were explored, and some experiments related to the automatic recognition of tone and tone value classes were reported. We expect the results reported by this study to shed light on the development of an automatic tone value classification mechanism, which will be used in computer-assisted pronunciation training for L2 learners in the future.

This research-to-practice paper describes developing and analyzing state-of-the-art smart boots created by combining CAD technology and advanced 3D printing techniques to attract students in bio-engineering and related fields. The primary objective of this innovative immobilization boot is to expedite fracture recovery phases through an ergonomic design to ensure optimal patient comfort during its use. Technological solutions are crucial in aiding the rehabilitation process for fractures caused by falls, heavy lifting, or rotational trauma. However, cost and comfort-related issues persist, underscoring the need for alternative approaches. This research addresses these challenges and delves into the broader implications of fracture treatment, catalyzing future projects and investigations in bioengineering. Additionally, this study serves as an educational tool that sparks the interest of high school and engineering students, promoting multidisciplinary collaboration in innovation. By involving students in specialized courses covering 3D design, human bone anatomy, biology, and materials science, this initiative empowers them to deepen their knowledge and develop new technologies to address bone injury problems. Material analyses include evaluating the type of material depending on the fracture site, such as PLA for printing and cotton and silicone gel for the midsection between the splint and the body. This research aims to advance our understanding of the type of fracture, the methods associated with their treatment, and tissue repair processes during bone callus formation. To summarize, this multidisciplinary approach drives advancements in bio-engineering and related fields, aiming to enhance patient outcomes and inspire students to pursue further research in bio-engineering and related fields. This work describes the investigation of planar waveguide crossings using metaheuristic methods associated with the two-dimensional finite element method (2D-FEM). An optimization and measurement process are performed on the power transmission and crosstalk of the waveguide crossings and then the values calculated are compared with other studies in the literature. The best performing adjusted crossing is optimally designed by applying the following metaheuristics: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), and a hybrid algorithm combining the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure and Simulated Annealing (GRASP-SA). Transmission efficiency results higher than 97% and crosstalk below the -50 dB over a wide wavelength range, with a footprint of $\mathbf{4.9}\times \mathbf{4.9}\ \boldsymbol{\mu} \mathbf{m}^{\mathbf{2}}$ .

This paper presents a realistic power transformer condition assessment and Health Index (HI) determination technique. The real-time operating data of twenty-seven power transformers of Bhutan Power Corporation Limited in transmission substations are used for condition evaluation. The diagnostic test data are combined into nine diagnostic groups for condition assessment. The conventional method of scoring and weighting average and the fuzzy logic methods are adopted for the condition assessment of power transformers. The excel program was developed for the conventional method for seamless evaluation. All the parameters harmonies the estimation and classification of the transformer operating condition. Then, this paper proposed new procedures for validating the conventional system of HI determination by the fuzzy logic method. © 2022 IEEE.

The problems of high voltage equipment usually come from the imperfection of solid insulation, which may be caused by poor workmanship during cable installation, leading to multi-void inside solid insulation and subsequently partial discharge when that cable is put in service. Therefore, this paper aims to investigate the discharge phenomena of multi-void inside solid insulation by creating artificial defects in epoxy resin and testing under AC and very low frequency voltage sources. The test object consists of a single void with different void diameters and multi-void created by injecting the air voids at atmospheric pressure into epoxy resin. The partial discharge inside a single void and multi-void is detected by using a conventional and unconventional sensor. The results of PD measurement are represented in the phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) and several partial discharge parameters, such as PD charge magnitude and PD repetition rate. In addition, the results are analyzed to observe the impact of the multi-void with different conditions such as variable void diameter, the thickness of epoxy resin, type of voltage source, and PD sensor. The test can specify trends toward breakdown and the severity of multi-void inside solid insulation. © 2022 IEEE.

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) systems are being increasingly used in a broad range of applications requiring extensive communications either to interconnect the UAVs with each other or to connect them with Ground Control Stations (GCS). Due to the complexity and difficulty of performing long distance experiments with these robots, simulation becomes a viable and necessary alternative. However, focusing either on the modeling of UAV operations or communication dynamics, available simulation tools are not able to capture the complex interdependencies between these two aspects, especially in applications where extensive communications are required. The main contribution of this work is the modeling and implementation of strategies for enhancing connectivity of a UAV performing long-distance navigation tasks, taking into account applications' requirements. The proposed strategies aim at assessing the impact of frequent handovers between wireless access points in terms of packet loss and available bandwidth. The first strategy prioritizes maintaining a connection until the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) observed by the robot reaches a predefined threshold. For this, it is assumed that the data to be transmitted is small enough so that the robot may change its modulation to obtain smaller bandwidths while improving connection time. The second one prioritizes bandwidth availability, thus, it always searches for a network that is able to offer data rates higher than a minimum threshold. A hybrid model is validated by considering the characteristics of each individual strategy. The capabilities of the simulation tool designed for this work are illustrated through some case-study scenarios. © 2021 IEEE.
