The scheduling of the laser inter-satellite links (LISLs) can effectively improve the network performance but is challenging in mega-constellations due to the large amount of satellites. In this paper, inter-OP LISL scheduling is realized by federated reinforcement learning, which reduces complexity by decomposing global scheduling into independent decisions for each satellite and solved by multi-agent reinforcement learning. Based on the constellations collaboration, federated learning (FL) with partial and global aggregations is utilized to reduce the overhead for the model update, where the geostationary orbit (GEO)-GEO collaboration for global aggregation can be performed infrequently since the indirect associations among the GEO satellites according to the motion of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite. Meanwhile, simulation results indicate that the proposed method reduces the average hop count by over two hops and decreases the number of LISLs by over 25% compared to the fixed LISLs, and the model update overhead is reduced to 46.6% of that in the centralized method.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is one of the six usage scenarios of the sixth generation (6G) mobile communication system. Since an optical system can also provide communication and sensing abilities, optical ISAC has become a potential complement to radio-frequency (RF) ISAC. As orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has gained increasing interest in optical systems, we propose a direct-current-biased optical OFDM (DCO-OFDM) scheme for free space optical (FSO) ISAC in this paper. To derive the spectral efficiency for communication and the Fisher information for sensing, we model the clipping noise of DCO-OFDM with the Bussgang theorem to obtain the expression of the signal-to-noise ratio. In addition, based on the derived performance metrics, an optimization problem for power allocation is formulated, and an iterative algorithm is proposed to solve the problem efficiently. Meanwhile, numerical simulations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and reveal the trade-off between communication and sensing functionalities of the OFDM-based FSO-ISAC system.

In this paper, a multi-satellite cooperation architecture for satellite-terrestrial communications is studied with the dense constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Moreover, beam hopping (BH) and frequency allocation enable a flexible solution for the non-uniform geographical distribution of communications, which are optimized to improve the performance and avoid interference in satellite-terrestrial communications. The total problem for maximizing the networking throughput and ensuring the delay fairness is decomposed into two sub-problems, in which the deep reinforcement learning is utilized to determine the BH pattern, and the frequency allocation among beams is implemented by the majorization-minimization algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method obtains a 13.0% improvement in throughput compared with the original benchmark, while the delay fairness can be ensured by the iterative solution of the two sub-problems.

Optical intelligent reflecting surfaces (OIRS) can be deployed in visible light communication (VLC) systems to provide OIRS-reflected paths for multiple light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and users via adjustable reflective characteristics, thereby significantly mitigating the signal blockage challenges in VLC. To achieve this goal, the effectiveness of OIRS in the non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA)-based multiple-input single-output (MISO) VLC system is explored, while the system model is established considering both the line-of-sight (LoS) and the OIRS-reflected paths. Subsequently, the problem is formulated with the objective of optimizing the OIRS configuration to maximize the achievable sum data rate with the diverse constraints. To address the highly intractable and non-convex problem, a relaxed iterative optimization algorithm based on the Taylor expansion is proposed in this paper. Moreover, numerical results are provided to show the improvement of the achievable sum data rate and the effects of the proposed relaxed iterative algorithm.

The rapid population growth and industrial development in developing countries harm the agricultural sector because many agricultural lands are converted into residential or industrial areas. Applying modern agriculture technologies such as hydroponic could help to overcome the problem. However, hydroponics requires special attention in adjusting the pH and nutrient levels to maximize plant growth, so an automated system is needed to manage the process. In this research, a smart hydroponic system is proposed by applying Adaptive Networkbased Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) and Internet-of-Things. The IoT system consists of sensor, actuator, and data processing layer is designed to monitor and control the condition of pH and nutrition of the observed plants. Then, the ANFIS algorithm is designed to control the level of pH and nutrition. The experiment results show that the system can automatically adjust the pH and nutrient levels to the expected range for growing plants, and the fuzzy controller made using ANFIS are more accurate and stable than the fuzzy controller made using Sugeno. This study shows that ANFIS has excellent performance when controlling multiple actuators, as long as the data set has great granularity and well defined.

Interest in the two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) continues to intensify, driven by their suitable band gaps to supplant silicon as next-generation semiconductor materials. Among various TMDs, tungsten diselenide (WSe2) is renowned for its superior electrical properties in carrier density and mobility under ambient conditions. Despite its notable attributes, the behavior of monolayer WSe2 in the electron-doped regime under cryogenic conditions remains largely uncharted, particularly concerning its magnetotransport properties. In this study, we reveal the transport mechanisms of monolayer WSe2 from high temperatures down to the cryogenic regime. As evident by Efros–Shklovskii variable-range hopping (E-S VRH) in the cryogenic regime, strong Coulomb interactions arise between electrons. Above 8 K, an uncommon nonsaturated quadratic large magnetoresistance (MR) can be explained by the wave-function shrinkage model, which is consistent with the E-S VRH transport mechanism. Notably, the nonsaturated quadratic large MR shows a magnitude up to 1740% at 13 T. These findings underscore the potential applications for monolayer WSe2 in cryogenic field-effect devices, magnetic sensors, and memory devices and mark a significant advance in magnetotransport research.

In this work, we report the second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(2) for epsilon phase Gallium Oxide (ϵ-Ga2O3) thin film on sapphire. ϵ-Ga2O3 exhibits hexagonal P63mc space group symmetry, which is a non-centrosymmetric structure with non-zero second order susceptibility. By focusing a pulsed laser beam on to a polished ϵ-Ga2O3 thin film, we collected the generated second harmonic photons with an ultra-sensitive femtowatt photodetector, obtaining effective second-order nonlinear optical susceptibility of χ(2) = 4.89×10-3 pm/V at wavelength of 800 nm. Two different measurement systems collecting reflected and transmitted photons were applied separately to make the result more convincing. The wavelength dependence from 790 nm to 900 nm and polarization dependence from TM mode to TE mode were measured as well. These results will be helpful for the design and fabrication of Ga2O3 based integrated photonics platform in the infrared-visible spectral range. © 2022 IEEE.

Bacterial discrimination is crucial for accurate microbiological diagnosis and timely antibiotic treatment. Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is an ideal technique due to its non-invasive, label-free molecular sensing capabilities. By analyzing bacterial supernatants, containing various purine derivatives, SERS can differentiate bacterial species based on their unique spectral distributions. However, the same bacterial species with different antibiotic resistance may secrete similar purine derivatives, differing only slightly in composition. Furthermore, each purine derivative may have a different molecular affinity to the SERS substrate, making it difficult to distinguish the exact molecular ratio. To improve SERS-based bacterial discrimination, we propose an air-liquid microfluidics-integrated SERS system (ALM-SERS) that selectively adsorbs and detects bacterial secretions. By taking features of precise microdroplet manipulation and contact area from microfluidics and features of selective molecular adsorption and fingerprints characterization from the SERS technique, we successfully perform a "sequential molecular adsorption" strategy to address the signal interference of complicated molecular mixtures in existing SERS methods. As a proof of concept, we first evaluate the molecular affinity of purine derivatives and then demonstrate the competitive analyte adsorption using adenine/cytosine and hypoxanthine/uracil sample mixtures. Finally, we tested six bacterial supernatants, including two Gram types and four strains with identical taxonomy but differing antibiotic resistance. Another six clinically isolated bacterial samples with different antibiotic resistance were also applied. Our results showed that a successful bacterial discrimination between similar species was not possible using a single SERS spectrum. The spread of Corona Virus Disease 19 (COVID-19) in Indonesia is still relatively high and has not shown a significant decrease. One of the main reasons is due to the lack of supervision on the implementation of health protocols such as wearing masks in daily activities. Recently, state-of-the-art algorithms were introduced to automate face mask detection. To be more specific, the researchers developed various kinds of architectures for the detection of masks based on computer vision methods. This paper aims to evaluate well-known architectures, namely the ResNet50, VGG11, InceptionV3, EfficientNetB4, and YOLO (You Only Look Once) to recommend the best approach in this specific field. By using the MaskedFace-Net dataset, the experimental results showed that the EfficientNetB4 architecture has better accuracy at 95.77% compared to the YOLOv4 architecture of 93.40%, InceptionV3 of 87.30%, YOLOv3 of 86.35%, ResNet50 of 84.41%, VGG11 of 84.38%, and YOLOv2 of 78.75%, respectively. It should be noted that particularly for YOLO, the model was trained using a collection of MaskedFace-Net images that had been pre-processed and labelled for the task. The model was initially able to train faster with pre-trained weights from the COCO dataset thanks to transfer learning, resulting in a robust set of features expected for face mask detection and classification.

We utilize the characteristics of VR technology, combining wearable devices with physical wheelchair seating, to create a virtual and real interactive game of wheelchair basketball. This enables people with disabilities to exercise at home and allows the general public to experience the challenges of disability sports, fostering empathy and emphasizing the importance of social justice.
