The integration of renewable energy sources inherently reduces power system inertia, which can result in a higher rate of change of frequency. Moreover, reduced inertia also affects the small-signal stability and controllability of the interconnected synchronous generators (SGs). In this paper, we use the linear state-space model to show the impact of SGs' inertia constants on eigenvalues, participation factors, and Gramian-based controllability metrics. Both a single-machine and an IEEE 9-bus system were analyzed. The results for the IEEE 9-bus system with three SGs show an optimal range of inertia constants to increase the damping of a specific mode and increase controllability. Thus, a framework for multi-objective optimization combining large-signal stability, small-signal stability, and controllability is proposed that can be applied to grid-forming converters. © 2024 IEEE.

Participation in the data economy is prone to unjust power imbalances. Individuals function as mere data sources and are left out of decisions on how, when, and where personal data is accumulated and processed. In this paper, we translate Arnsteins’ ‘Ladder of Citizen Participation’ to the field of the data economy to offer a conceptual lens to tackle power imbalances’ underlying structures. For this, we derived assumptions from the application’s ecosystem. We propose to encase the lowest rungs of the ladder with the term of involuntary participation and frame individuals as digital Citizens to avoid a mere focus on the economic dimension of participation. Building on this, we translate the eight rungs of Arnstein’s original ladder to the new application field of the data economy through examples and design affordances corresponding with differing degrees of digital citizens’ data agency. Eventually, we contemplate implications for socio-technical design resulting from the re-conceptualization of the ‘ladder’ and formulate future research. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

This work presents an adaptive tracking guidance method for robotic fishes. The scheme enables robots to suppress external interference and eliminate motion jitter. An adaptive integral surge line-of-sight guidance rule is designed to eliminate dynamics interference and sideslip issues. Limited-time yaw and surge speed observers are reported to fit disturbance variables in the model. The approximation values can compensate for the system's control input and improve the robots' tracking ***, this work develops a terminal sliding mode controller and third-order differential processor to determine the rotational torque and reduce the robots' run jitter. Then, Lyapunov's theory proves the uniform ultimate boundedness of the proposed method. Simulation and physical experiments confirm that the technology improves the tracking error convergence speed and stability of robotic fishes.

CRAFT: Criticality-Aware Fault-Tolerance Enhancement Techniques for Emerging Memories-Based Deep Neural Networks

Deep neural networks (DNNs) have emerged as the most effective programming paradigm for computer vision and natural language processing applications. With the rapid development of DNNs, efficient hardware architectures for deploying DNN-based applications on edge devices have been extensively studied. Emerging nonvolatile memories (NVMs), with their better scalability, nonvolatility, and good read performance, are found to be promising candidates for deploying DNNs. However, despite the promise, emerging NVMs often suffer from reliability issues, such as stuck-at faults, which decrease the chip yield/memory lifetime and severely impact the accuracy of DNNs. A stuck-at cell can be read but not reprogrammed, thus, stuck-at faults in NVMs may or may not result in errors depending on the data to be stored. By reducing the number of errors caused by stuck-at faults, the reliability of a DNN-based system can be enhanced. This article proposes CRAFT, i.e., criticality-aware fault-tolerance enhancement techniques to enhance the reliability of NVM-based DNNs in the presence of stuck-at faults. A data block remapping technique is used to reduce the impact of stuck-at faults on DNNs accuracy. Additionally, by performing bit-level criticality analysis on various DNNs, the critical-bit positions in network parameters that can significantly impact the accuracy are identified. Based on this analysis, we propose an encoding method which effectively swaps the critical bit positions with that of noncritical bits when more errors (due to stuck-at faults) are present in the critical bits. Experiments of CRAFT architecture with various DNN models indicate that the robustness of a DNN against stuck-at faults can be enhanced by up to 105 times on the CIFAR-10 dataset and up to 29 times on ImageNet dataset with only a minimal amount of storage overhead, i.e., 1.17%. This paper aims at applying optimal control principles to investigate optimal vaccination strategies in different phases of a pandemic. Background of the study is that many countries have started their vaccination procedures against the COVID-19 disease in the beginning of 2021, but supply shortages for the vaccines prevented that everyone could be vaccinated immediately. At the beginning of 2022, in contrast, the vaccine supply was ample, but the effectiveness of different existing vaccines to avoid infection by new virus variants was in doubt, as well as the acceptance of booster doses decreased over time. To account for these effects, two formulations of optimization tasks based on different epidemic models are proposed in this paper. The solution of these tasks determines optimal distribution strategies for available vaccines, and optimized vaccination schemes to reduce the need of booster doses for later phase. This paper defines an approach applied for implementation of application specific beamforming modalities in finite aperture, space-constrained, optimized arrays. To achieve desired response in array factor, appropriate tapering schemes are selected while focusing on array Figures of Merits (FOMs). In this paper, space-constrained optimized arrays of sizes 1 × 32 (linear) and 8 × 8 (planar) are designed using Opti-metrics in High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS). The calculated weights and steering scheme are then applied to HFSS models and Matlab based calculations are validated for proof of concept. Array metrics like low SLL, limited beam-broadening, increased directivity and limited scan loss in planned Field of View (FOV) are targeted metrics. This paper also briefly elaborates comparison of various tapering techniques, while focusing on defined FOMs. The working procedure is developed which extends itself from excitation control of linear to planar dimensions. Keeping in view limited computational resources for full wave simulation, an approach using Pattern Multiplication (PM) is suggested to converge to desired results for large sized arrays. The scheme of this paper has also been used in a design of Hybrid beamforming network (BFN). © 2024 IEEE.

The surrogate-assisted evolutionary algorithm (SAEA) is one of the most efficient approaches for addressing expensive continuous or combinatorial optimization problems. However, it encounters significant challenges in expensive mixed-variable optimization problems (EMVOPs). To overcome this limitation, a dual-state-driven evolutionary optimization (called DSDEO), integrating a surrogate-assisted mixed-variable evolutionary optimization stage (MVEOS) and a surrogate-assisted continuous-variable evolutionary optimization stage (CVEOS), is proposed in this paper. Specifically, MVEOS employs global and local search to enhance the exploration and exploitation of the mixed-variable space. Global and local searches are alternately executed if one search fails to yield a better solution. CVEOS utilizes a continuous-improvement strategy to refine the continuous variables of the best solution obtained so far. Experimental results demonstrate the advantages of DSDEO compared to some state-of-the-art SAEAs on many benchmark problems. © 2023 IEEE.

The use of batteries as an energy storage medium has a very important role in the installation of renewable energy power plants, such as photovoltaics to overcome intermittency in photovoltaics and to maintain stable power quality. In this study, the installation of solar plants that was used as the research object was a smart micro grid that integrates photovoltaic electrical energy sources with the Utility electricity network for residential scale. The battery monitoring system is used to manage the performance of existing batteries on the electricity grid through analysis of the battery's electrical values such as current, voltage, power and energy, so that it can function optimally in storing electrical energy and supplying electricity to users. Internet of things (IoT) technology is used to provide easy transfer of data obtained through the process of data acquisition to data visualization provided to be accessed by users in real time. This research aims to develop an IoT-based battery monitoring system. The development carried out focuses on the data acquisition process, the data transfer process using IoT technology, the process of analyzing and visualizing data on the IoT cloud and remote access to users. © 2024 IEEE.
