In recent years, the evolutionary developmental (Evo- Devo) concept has gained traction in the field of engineering design. This paper presents a new biologically inspired approach rooted in Evo- Devo principles to iteratively develop car chassis designs based on a specified design brief. The proposed method draws inspiration from biological cell growth and differentiation behaviors to generate intricate engineering designs. Employing evolutionary algorithms, the paper aims to evolve gene regulatory networks that govern the growth of a minimal viable design. The primary goal is to achieve an optimal design capable of withstanding sudden crash impacts within safety limits. Comprehensive simulation results demonstrate that the proposed approach, using genetic algorithms, evolves gene regulatory networks that generate a spectrum of viable designs. Furthermore, the best-evolved solution exhibits generalizability and adaptability across different simulation parameters. © 2024 IEEE.

Animal size impacts locomotion, due to its effect on the influence of gravity, inertia, and an animal’s internal elasticity and damping. We are developing a cat robot to further explore the impact of these four characteristics on animal locomotion. This paper details the mechanical design of this cat robot’s rear limbs, as well as the simulated validation of this design. In future work, we plan to design forelimbs with a floating scapula and test the robot in split-belt treadmill experiments similar to those done in mammalian experiments as we develop its synthetic nervous system controller. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Mammalian locomotion is a complex behavior arising from interaction between neural and biomechanical systems, driven by rhythmic activity originating in the spinal cord. Although it has been extensively studied, the structure of the circuits that produce this behavior remains unknown. One approach to modeling the rhythmic activity is with half-center models, in which there are alternating periods of flexion and extension to coordinate muscle activity. While this approach is sufficient for simple antagonistic muscle pairs, it can be difficult to expand the controller for more complex models with muscle synergies. This work introduces a method of modeling the activity in the spinal cord with a population of neurons exhibiting a continuous cycle of activity, rather than the push-pull of half-centers. To evaluate the effectiveness of this neural model for locomotive behavior, we integrate it with a biomechanical simulation to control the muscle activity in a pair of rat hindlimbs. With this controller, a pair of simulated rat hindlimbs is able to walk on the ground with joint trajectories exhibiting similar features to the animal during locomotion. This model of the spinal cord activity shows promising results on a simple model and demonstrates the ability to be adapted to control more complex biomechanical models with muscle synergies. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

In this paper, we study a novel fixed-time extremum-seeking algorithm that eliminates the need for filters to obtain an appropriate estimation of the gradient of a static map for optimization problems where the cost function is available only via measurements or evaluations. Previous research leveraged these filters to facilitate the application of averaging theory in analyzing the stability properties of the system. Specifically, they were employed to separate, using multi-time scale techniques, the non-smooth terms of the algorithms from the rapidly fluctuating oscillatory terms associated with periodic dithers. This separation was achieved through a singular perturbation argument, where the filter acted as boundary layer system with a sufficiently fast transient. However, since in many practical applications such transient cannot be made arbitrarily fast, and since classic extremum-seeking algorithms are also known to be stable even in the absence of filters, it is natural to ask whether the fixed-time extremum-seeking dynamics can also be simplified by removing the filters while achieving semi-global practical fixed-time convergence properties. This paper addresses this question for scalar quadratic cost functions, providing positive and negative answers depending on the structure of the cost. Additionally, we demonstrate that removing the filters results in average dynamics distinct from the conventional fixed-time gradient flow dynamics found in existing literature. Furthermore, we provide numerical examples to illustrate our findings. © 2024 IEEE.

This research paper presents an advanced methodology for optimizing the design and automation of a bidirectional DC-DC converter with zero-voltage switching (ZVS). The optimization not only considers size, weight, power, and cost (SWaP-C) but also focuses on achieving an efficient and power-dense layout. It utilizes the PowerSynth tool for layout optimization. The paper introduces optimization algorithms for component selection to achieve high power density and employs the PowerSynth tool for physical layout optimization. It illustrates the tradeoff between low inductance and maximum junction temperature for different layout arrangements, aiding in selecting the optimum layout. In the optimization process, tradeoffs and critical design issues between low volume and high power are considered for the modular structure of the bidirectional boost converter. A Monte Carlo optimization method is utilized, exploring the design solution space. The physical layout solutions, including temperature and inductance values from PowerSynth, serve as input data for thermal analysis in Para Power, evaluating the associated risk for each layout design. Ultimately, this study aims to integrate mathematical design analysis with the PowerSynth 2 tool's layout optimization to automate and optimize the physical design of a ZVS bidirectional DC-DC converter. © 2023 IEEE.

As the basic parts of workshop processing, the life of the tool will affect the processing efficiency and processing quality, and the life of the tool will be affected by a variety of uncertain factors in the processing process, which makes it difficult to accurately predict. In order to improve the prediction accuracy, an improved IPSO algorithm was proposed to optimize the penalty factor c and kernel parameter g of SVM based on particle swarm optimization (PSO). Firstly, the influencing parameters of tool life are analyzed and the experimental data are extracted, and then the data is brought into the IPSO-SVM model to obtain the predicted data. IPSO algorithm can realize the adaptive change of inertia weight and introduce asynchronous learning formula to dynamically adjust the learning factor, which can effectively improve the prediction accuracy of tool life. Compared with the traditional PSO-SVM prediction model, the average relative error and average absolute error of IPSO-SVM are reduced by 5.275% and 5.006% respectively, which indicates that the SVM model optimized by IPSO algorithm has higher prediction accuracy. © 2023 IEEE.

With the global emergence of Regional Air Mobility (RAM) as a new transportation concept, the Korean government has recently recognized the growing interest in employing RAM services to enhance regional connectivity within South Korea. This research starts by formulating the following research question: "What are market dynamics associated with the adoption of RAM services in South Korea?" To answer the question, this research proposes a methodology that leverages a data-driven approach incorporating four modules: 1) potential vertiport location identification, 2) trip data preparation, 3) RAM fare and travel time estimations, and 4) market share estimation. Utilizing the modules, this research conducts what-if scenario analysis on five transportation scenarios across potential origin-destination pairs and estimates market shares for different transportation modes to assess feasibility and competitiveness related to the RAM services as a new transportation system. The main contribution of this research is to establish a basis for uncovering market dynamics of the upcoming RAM operations in South Korea and to provide insights for stakeholders, policymakers, and researchers prior to the actual implementation of the RAM services in South Korea. © 2024, International Council of the Aeronautical sciences. Influence of performance and emission of diesel engine with alumina nano material-based catalyst biodiesel using IoT

In this study, the performance and emissions of Al2O3 alkaline cottonseed biodiesel-powered compression ignition engines were predicted. An experiment was conducted using different biodiesel blends made from cottonseed oil under various loading conditions. Biodiesel was produced using ethanol and Cao-mg/Al2O3 as catalysts through the transesterification process and blended with diesel to produce CBDN10, CBDN20, CBDN30, and CBDN40. The CBDN20 blends showed an evident reduction in fuel consumption by 8% and a 12% improvement in thermal efficiency at high static thrust. The use of these blends resulted in minimal CO, CO2, and NOx emissions from engines. These emissions were monitored by an IoT system and analysed with gas analysers, which revealed CBDN20’s ability to reduce nitrogen oxide and hydrocarbon emissions compared to diesel. Additionally, CBDN20 demonstrated improved thermal efficiency and reduced brake-specific fuel consumption compared to the other blends. Copyright © 2024 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Feature reduction based on weighted neighborhood rough sets has been widely applied in machine learning and data mining. In existing weighted neighborhood rough set models, the weight of each feature is calculated independently and fixed without adjusting according to the selected feature set. Therefore, it cannot guarantee that the most significant feature for the selected feature set can always be selected. For this issue, we introduce adaptive weights into neighborhood relations, then propose a novel feature reduction approach. First, the separability of individual features and feature subsets is analyzed to adaptively calculate the weights of features based on the current selected feature set. Then, adaptively weighted neighborhood relations are defined to construct an adaptively weighted neighborhood rough set (AWNRS) model. Furthermore, a greedy search algorithm (DAWNRS) based on AWNRS is proposed to select a feature subset that has both high dependency and strong correlation. Finally, the proposed algorithm is compared with other representative reduction algorithms by using eight UCI datasets on three classifiers. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves superior classification performance. © 2024 IEEE.
