D-SVM over networked systems with non-ideal linking conditions

This paper considers distributed optimization algorithms, with application in binary classification via distributed support vector machines (D-SVM) over multi-agent networks subject to some link nonlinearities. The agents solve a consensus-constraint distributed optimization cooperatively via continuous-time dynamics, while the links are subject to strongly sign-preserving odd nonlinear conditions. Logarithmic quantization and clipping (saturation) are two examples of such nonlinearities. In contrast to existing literature that mostly considers ideal links and perfect information exchange over linear channels, we show how general sector-bounded models affect the convergence to the optimizer (i.e. the SVM classifier) over dynamic balanced directed networks. In general, any odd sector-bounded nonlinear mapping can be applied to our dynamics. The main challenge is to show that the proposed system dynamics always have one zero eigenvalue (associated with the consensus) and the other eigenvalues all have negative real parts. This is done by recalling arguments from matrix perturbation theory. Then, the solution is shown to converge to the agreement state under certain conditions. For example, the gradient tracking (GT) step size is tighter than the linear case by factors related to the upper/lower sector bounds. To the best of our knowledge, no existing work in distributed optimization and learning literature considers non-ideal link conditions. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

This paper considers the problem of controlling distributed energy resources (DERs) in a distribution network (DN); the paper focuses on the voltage regulation task and on the concept of virtual power plant(VPP). For the latter, we envision an aggregation of DERs as a VPP that tracks power setpoints at the point of common coupling to provide ancillary services to the bulk power system. We propose a feedback-based controller that pursues solutions to a time-varying AC optimal power flow problem. This controller ensures voltage constraints are met in real time, assuming no voltage measurement errors. The feedback from the system mitigates the controller sensitivity to model uncertainties and eliminates the need for measurements of uncontrollable loads at every node. The feedback-based controller is tested on the IEEE37-node system with delta and wye-connected devices in a strongly unbalanced configuration.

1 Introduction Reliability is defined as the probability that a system or component will perform its required function for a specified period of time under specified operating conditions(Ebeling,2019).Traditional reliability theory assumes that both a system and its components have only two possible states in the operation stage,either perfectly functioning or completely ***,as engineered systems become more sophisticated,involving larger sizes,increased functionality,and greater intelligence,and with advancements in sensing technologies,it has been extensively observed that systems and components exhibit multiple distinct states as they deteriorate over *** failure behavior,damage severity,performance capacity,and operational efficiency of the system and components vary among these states(Lisnianski et al.,2018).It,therefore,necessitates the development of advanced reliability theories and methodologies that are capable of characterizing these systems and components with multi-state nature.

In this paper, stochastic optimal control problems in continuous time and space are considered. In recent years, such problems have received renewed attention from the lens of reinforcement learning (RL) which is also one of our motivation. The main contribution is a simulation-based algorithm - dual ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) - to numerically approximate the solution of these problems. The paper extends our previous work where the dual EnKF was applied in deterministic settings of the problem. The theoretical results and algorithms are illustrated with numerical experiments. © 2024 IEEE.

Since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, fossil fuels and internal combustion engines have played a fundamental role in meeting transportation and energy needs. However, the extensive reliance on fossil fuels over the past two centuries has resulted in dire consequences, such as global warming, environmental disruption, glacier melting, rising sea levels, and droughts. Consequently, scientists have been actively exploring alternative solutions to replace fossil fuel-based transportation systems. Electric vehicles (EVs) have emerged as a pivotal solution to address the existing challenges in transportation systems. Although the concept of EV s has existed for some time, the widespread production and adoption of fully electric cars was hindered until the early 21st century owing to the unavailability of suitable batteries or energy storage systems. The efficacy of EVs relies heavily on their energy storage systems. In this article, we evaluate various battery types (including nickel metal hydrate, zinc hybrid cathode, lead acid, and lithium-ion) in the context of EV performance, using MAT LAB Simulink. A MATLAB Simulink-based electric vehicle model was employed to assess battery performance. Our analysis reveals that lithium-ion batteries demonstrate superior performance metrics, including a specific energy ranging from 100-275 WH/kg, energy density of 200-235 Wh/L, specific power of 350-3000 W/kg, cell voltage of 3.6V, and cycle durability of 500-3000. Furthermore, we consider the typical cost of these batteries, noting that lead-acid batteries are relatively more affordable than other options available in the market. © 2023 IEEE.

NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) mission collects large data volumes of the Sun's daily activity. Data compression is crucial for space missions to reduce data storage and video bandwidth requirements by eliminating redundancies in the data. In this paper, we present a novel neural Transformer-based video compression approach specifically designed for the SDO images. Our primary objective is to efficiently exploit the temporal and spatial redundancies inherent in solar images to obtain a high compression ratio. Our proposed architecture benefits from a novel Transformer block called Fused Local-aware Window (FLa Win), which incorporates window-based self-attention modules and an efficient fused local-aware feed-forward (FLaFF) network. This architectural design allows us to simultaneously capture short-range and long-range information while facilitating the extraction of rich and diverse contextual representations. Moreover, this design choice results in reduced computational complexity. Experimental results demonstrate the significant contribution of the FLaWin Transformer block to the compression performance, outperforming conventional hand-engineered video codecs such as H.264 and H.265 in terms of rate-distortion trade-off. © 2023 IEEE.

Fire rescue challenges and solutions have evolved from straightfor-ward plane rescue to encompass 3D space due to the rise of high-rise city ***,this study facilitates a system with quick and simplified on-site launching and generates real-time location data,enabling fire rescuers to arrive at the intended spot faster and correctly for effective and precise ***-positioning with step-by-step instructions is proposed when launching the locating system,while no extra measuring instrument like Total Station(TS)is ***-time location tracking is provided via a 3D space real-time locating system(RTLS)constructed using Ultra-wide Bandwidth technology(UWB),which requires electromagnetic waves to pass through concrete walls.A hybrid weighted least squares with a time difference of arrival(WLS/TDOA)positioning method is proposed to address real path-tracking issues in 3D space and to meet RTLS requirements for quick computing in real-world *** 3D WLS/TDOA algorithm is theoretically constructed with the Cramer-Rao lower bound(CRLB).The computing complexity is reduced to the lower bound for embedded hardware to directly compute the time differential of the arriving signals using the time-to-digital converter(TDC).The results of the experiments show that the errors are controlled when the positioning algorithm is applied in various complicated situations to fulfill the requirements of engineering *** statistical analysis of the data reveals that the proposed UWB RTLS auto-positioning system can track target tags with an accuracy of 0.20 m.

This paper introduces a communication and planning framework to facilitate efficient state update information between an autonomous robotic system and a human operator under scenarios where continuous robotic monitoring is not available. The framework estimates the operator’s mental model and uses the difference between the estimated mental model and the actual world state and robot plans to trigger selective communication updates to the operator. The framework is deployed in a simulation environment where a rapid task planning algorithm adapts robot plans to a dynamic operational environment in real time. The proposed framework aims to improve situational awareness and reduce cognitive load in contrast with baseline methods where communication is triggered by mission milestones, obstacles encountered, or periodically. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.
